A Lifetime Denying the Odds

Martin McHugh was Leitrim's Connacht Championship winning goalkeeper from 1994. He enjoyed a stellar career as a Gaelic Footballer but his life also off the pitch is also dramatic.

Martin had two serious health scares with testicular and prostate cancer. He has shown remarkable character in leading a full life that has included him continuing to play club football well past the age of 50.

In the following documentary, the Aughnasheelin native talks to John Lynch about his sporting career, those cancer episodes in his life and how at times he feared he was close to death. Martin also talks about how his experience has led him to giving public talks on sensitive issues around men's health.

Michael Coleman and James Morrison are giants of traditional fiddle playing and, along with Paddy Killoran, defined the virtuoso "Sligo Style" of fiddling. All were born and raised in County Sligo, emigrated to America gaining huge success during the recording boom in New York in the 1920s and 30s. These programme follow their lives and their tunes, which were re-imported to Ireland and are the store from which most contemporary fiddlers have drawn their material.
