So, Man-Watcher- so let’s say hypothetically that I did fall short of perfection (which I am not pleading guilty to at all), in the big scheme of things, what real difference does it really make to you? What could I have even possibly done to warrant such a beating? Has the strenuous oppression worn you out? Rather, why wouldn’t you just take my supposed rebellion off of me and take it on yourself; and just take away my iniquity.

Dr. Bill is going to suggest that we have misunderstood how we are to ‘win’ in our Christian walk. It is not about the Retributive Principle at all. In fact, the clue is found all the way back in Genesis.

Here’s one very provocative quote in this show.

“Faith says that God’s wisdom is such that there is a possibility that going through hell could be part of an elaborate loving gift of God to one he wants to reward.”

Both wildly troubling and comforting at the same time. It just may answer a few of your many questions to God. Or…It may give you a few more.

Also thanks for making Gospel Rant podcast one of the top 10% podcasts in the world.

Here's a couple of teasers that you may find interesting—and maybe never heard before. So many of us think that Job is about the dangers of challenging and questioning God. And when you do, you need to repent very quickly. While that’s a clean morality message, it is not the message of Job.

Job never officially repents—that is he does not use the Hebrew word for repent. Instead, he says, “I revoke (??) and I find comfort in ashes and dust.” Interesting and not what is usually taught.
Second, God said at the end (Job 42:7) that Job had spoken what is right. So what did Job have to repent of? Maybe, in spite of what we’ve all been told, the book isn’t about ‘repentance.’ Curious.
Third, Chapter 28 appears to have been shoved right into the middle of one of Job’s long tirades, but it does not appear to belong there. What’s going on?

The Church the Holy Spirit Built! #7

This is Part 7 of our series: The Church the Holy Spirit Built.

Luke continues to highlight the powerful themes shaping this early movement—based on legitimate eyewitness accounts. There was a surprising unity, a deep sense of shared purpose, radical generosity, and undeniable power.

So what was going on?

If I had to sum it up for Theophilus, I’d simply say:

“…and much grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33, NIV)

In context, charis refers to the experienced favor of God—poured out over the gathered believers. This wasn’t just about agreeing with a confession of faith. They felt it. They knew it. God was irrationally for them. He actually liked them—as they were.

Imagine that.

Imagine what it would feel like to live in the confidence of God's unearned, unstoppable favor. It was visible. It was powerful. It was megale—great. Something unmistakably special. Something enviable.

And honestly...

Don’t we need that today?

This is Part 5 of our series: The Church the Holy Spirit Built.

I’m continually amazed by the transformation of Peter.

Who told him he could heal a crippled man?
What if it hadn’t worked?
What if he became a public joke?
Wouldn’t it have been safer—and more practical—to just start a GoFundMe for the guy?

And yet, there he is. Bold. Unfiltered. Taking a wild, Spirit-led risk.
Honestly, don’t you imagine Peter was just as shocked as everyone else?
I can almost see John turning to him, eyebrows raised, thinking:
“What just happened?! Peter… what are you doing?”

So why now? Why this place? Why this man?

Because Jesus was scripting something far bigger.
The physical healing was incredible, yes—but it was just the setup.
The real miracle—the one that changes everything—was still to come.
And with everyone’s attention locked in, Jesus speaks... through Peter.

The Church the Holy Spirit Built! #4

This is Part 4 of our series: The Church the Holy Spirit Built.

What we see here is the visible DNA of Jesus and His Spirit—actively moving through and motivating ordinary people. Because of His presence, these regular folks—people just like us—began to show signs of something radically new:

A deep and undeniable devotion to the gospel (proskateresis)—a prioritization that hadn’t been there before.
A surprising unity of thought, intention, purpose, and vision (homothumadon)—in stark contrast to the divisiveness so common in any group.
A bold, sometimes messy, but genuine other-oriented compassion that led them to meet the needs of others above their own (diamerizo).

Sure, people can show some of this on their own—plenty of non-believers do. But Luke is pointing to something more. This movement was unmistakable, public, noticed. It wasn’t perfect, but it was powerful. Ask any pastor today—they’d agree: This was special.

So here’s the question:
Church—why don’t we expect this today?

The Church the Holy Spirit Built! #3

This is the third in our series “The Church The Holy Spirit Built.” The 120 Jesus-followers each individually had some entity that looked to eye-witnesses like tongues of fire come upon them as they were praying at the first of three daily prayer times, during the annual feast of Pentecost. They were crammed into an upper room in the Jerusalem area. Where, according to eyewitness testimony, they each individually were “filled with the Spirit.” Then something happened because the next scene is all the 120 on the crowded streets of Jerusalem preaching brilliantly, and telling the pious Jews who had come to the festival about the wonders of God—in their own mother tongues. Crazy.

Unbelievable. Clearly the work of the divine Spirit. Why don’t we expect this today? Check it out.

I want to know too, don’t you? Don’t be tempted to buy that worn out trope that all of this was only for the first century-- not today. God help us. Dr. Bill is beginning a new series on the very important first five chapters of the book of Acts. We call it "The Church The Holy Spirit Built.” Luke is writing the historic overview of the church likely under a commission from a wealthy supporter, Theophilus (God-Lover). Why was Theophilus interested? Because the story of the church in those first months and years was unprecedented, the lives changed, people healed, and even society norms challenged and tossed on their heads. “Luke, what in the world got into those regular, average men and women that could ignite something like this?”

We want to know too, don’t you?

It is unfortunate that so many today believe that “Well that was the early church. They just caught lightening in a bottle. Great history, but not relevant today.” Dr. Bill will strongly argue that that sentiment couldn’t be more wrong. Check it out. Also find the videos on YouTube (drbillsenyard).

In a nutshell, that was Calvins’s concern for Christians.

Vagabond Diaries #33: Tale of the Orphan Magician 2

Welcome to God’s Love for the Unlovable and Gospel Rant series and format, Vagabond Diaries. In the last Rant I shared something special and valuable to you in your Christian walk. I said that ever since the Fall, humanity, all sexes, races, all socioeconomic category, whether you’ve had an easy life or hard, each us is born with a deep relentless drive for one thing. It is how we are made. It is how God wired us. We each long for father. By this I am not referring to a a physical paterfamilias, rather that connection, that space, that feeling that you are in an embrace where you are cherished, appreciated, adored, where someone finds you lovable, lovely and loved, where you know, just know that someone has your back.

Those connections are very hard to come by. Ultimately this longing for father can only be satisfied in the embrace of Jesus himself—ultimately in heaven. Truth is that he feels that toward you right now, but your midbrain has been so abused, terrorized and wiring fried by bad relationship after bad relationship, your defensive mechanisms wont let you feel it.

So Paul says in Eph 3, you need to regularly access God’s power (that would be noticeable) through the Spirit in your inner being before you can even begin to hope to experience the vast love of Jesus that is already yours and is flooding over you like a tsunami. Doesn’t that make sense?

So that is the core message in my new middle school fantasy, The Tale of the Orphan Magician. It is hard to count all of the actual or functional orphans in the book, including whole countries. Everyone and every institution is longing for father—including an entire continent.

In the book, Amaratzim will become embroiled in an all-out world war, driven by father longing. What can happen? Will they ever feel it? And what is the Great King going to do?

It is a book for young teens, but as with all good fantasy books, adults will greatly value from reading it.

Today’s excerpt is from the storyteller dragon Rahgornah. He is telling the history of the Trollian war in the context of this lack of father longing. He seems to think that all wars and all conflicts are ultimately caused by that absence. If he’s right, that is an important messaging from we Christians. Here he is. Welcome to God’s Love for the Unlovable and Gospel Rant series and format, Vagabond Diaries. Today I want to share something special and I hope very valuable to you in your Christian walk. Unless and until that is satisfied, every day, we will subconsciously at least keep looking for it, be dissatisfied, and more than likely try to get the itch scratched by other counterfeits. Curious?

This rant is an excerpt from my latest Tween fantasy book, hot off the press June 2, called The tale of the Orphan Magician. It is the longest and most gutsy book in the entire Kingdom Quest series to-date. Kingdom Quest philosophy is inspired by CS Lewis and his extremely popular and life changing series Chronicles of Narnia. Even though Christianity, Jesus, the cross or salvation are never mentioned directly, they are there, in the background, being imprinted on the young readers brain.

The Tale of the Orphan Magician is about this one drive that all of us have—and where can we finally find satisfaction. The excerpt is a section of a talk by the storyteller for our tale, Rahgornah, an ancient Sakalon dragon who is a keeper of all history. He believes that this singular drive is the main thing behind all history. Interesting?

Today’s Vagabond Diary, is another excerpt from my recently published book for women, women’s groups, and book clubs Dance Daughters of the Most High! Book 2. As you may have heard, it looks at seven largely underappreciated, misunderstood, and overlooked women in the Old Testament. This lady certainly fits those categories. Meet Huldah. Few people remember her name or role, but it was off the charts important to Israel and us today equally.

Without her, Judah’s valuable societal and religious revival in the 7th century BCE would have been a confusing mess, perhaps even a non-starter. How can I say this more emphatically? Huldah provided the missing voice of God.

My point, Huldah was a true hero and model for Jews and Christians of all times, but more to the point, an enough-heroine for women of all times. To quote William E. Phipps, “A woman was the first to declare Scripture holy.”

Today’s Vagabond Diary, is another excerpt from my recently published book for women, women’s groups and book clubs Dance Daughters of the Most High! Book 2. As you may have heard, it looks at seven largely underappreciated, misunderstood, and overlooked women in the Old Testament. This lady certainly fits those categories. Meet Rebekah.

Why is she included in this book on overlooked, misunderstood, and unappreciated women in the Old Testament? She has hardly been overlooked. Few women are more recognizable by any Christian than her. Most of us have heard about the romantic courtship and marriage to Isaac, an ancient Hallmark movie. It is the longest chapter in Genesis.

But then Isaac and Rebekah’s story takes a sharp and ugly turn when she conspires to scam and defraud 132-year-old Isaac for an official blessing for her favorite son, Jacob, whose name ironically means deceiver.

For that reason, many modern Christians hesitate to honor her and the part she plays in the story of God’s redemption of Israel. However, many ancient Jewish scholars would strongly disagree. They have no such qualms about Rebekah. I will explain.

Here’s the question. Was Rebekah a Spirit-kissed daughter of the Most High? Or was she something different altogether? What will we make of this fascinating, capable, mixed-bag, woman and distant progenitor of Jesus Himself?

Today’s Vagabond Diary, is an excerpt from my recently published book for women, women’s groups and book clubs Dance Daughters of the Most High! Book 2. As you may have heard, it looks at seven largely underappreciated, misunderstood, and overlooked women in the Old Testament. This lady certainly fits those categories. Meet Tamar. This woman’s story is not widely publicized in Christian circles. There are certain reasons, but are they good ones?

You certainly won’t hear about her in children’s church or on ‘visitation’ Sunday. Honestly, it is a bit of an embarrassment to modern Christians. It feels more like modern reality TV than the high bar for behavior we expect in the lives of Biblical characters, especially the Jewish patriarchs.

To make a long story short, Judah slept with his daughter-in-law Tamar, the same Judah who was the famous forefather of King David and Jesus. Then, in the understatement of the ages, he declares,

“She is more righteous than I” (Gen 38:26),

How can we look our teenagers in the eyes and explain this one?

Now we see why most modern commentators want to keep the Tamar story at arms or football-field length. And yet, drum roll…Jewish scholars see Tamar in a very different light. To many, she is a hero of the faith. Let’s see what you think.

Today is a real treat, I hope. I want to read a chapter from the third book in my award-winning Christian fantasy series for 10-16-year-olds, The Garden Tale. It has been favorably compared with Chronicles of Narnia. It is a fun and adventurous story but it also contains wonderful life-changing spiritual truth, or spiritual formation for children that age—and for any adult who might read it.

In The Garden Tale, a dicey corporation GKP has developed a powerful social media device and strategy that has captured the attention of the entire country. Girls, boys, men, and women are addicted to the thing. But who can stop them?

A task force headed by a programmer teen girl, Hui is having a conversation with one of the programmers at GKP, Marv, who is also concerned about the power of the algorithm.

The idea behind my book, The Garden Tale is to offer 10-15 year olds an explanation of the dangers of social media in 10-15 year old language.

Currently some project that 2 out of 3 tweens and teens are technically addicted to social media.

The unlikely prince, Yeled has convinced his adopted father, the King that he needs a quest to prove his enoughness and princeliness to the King and the people of Garden City. –and of course, himself. The King winked at Nomos the Royal Vizier and ordained a quest that is harder than any other quest ever, one that would be impossible for any prince-- including Yeled. Why? You’ll have to read it to find out. But in this chapter, the Prince heads out on his newly ordained quest accompanied by the Royal counselor Noomai. Enjoy.

This prayer has been often labeled the black psalm. You will see why. It ends, “Darkness is my closest friend,” clearly a slap in the face of the God who loves the unlovable. Can we really say such things to God? Isn’t that a sin? Yes and yes. But such imprecatory psalms have been given to us because they most effectively give us our heart’s real unvarnished words—not careful, theologically accurate and whitewashed words. In this groaning creation, we are going to need such prayers. I just call this my psalm.

As far as I know, this particular prayer is on no one’s Top 10 list of Top Old Testament prayers—but it should be. If you have ever been hurt, betrayed, disappointed, robbed or abused—and who hasn’t—and you have not experienced real justice, reparation, and forgiveness, you are going to love this prayer and it just may end up being something you want to pray to God a lot. It is time that we stop overlooking this prayer and begin to wonder about what Christianity might look like if we took it seriously. Maybe Solomon really was wise?

Exodus 33 is perhaps the most provocative to-date. For me, it captures the very spirit of what I think is the greatest prayer in the entire Bible—and I don’t mean the Lord’s Prayer—another show for another time. I am referring to Jesus’ humble prayer to his Father, “Not my will, but your will be done.” Moses is a very complicated character. This prayer of his is genius and should be in our repertoire.

My main criteria is that the prayer manifests something about the innate unique characteristics of God Himself that must have been revealed to the one praying. Hebrews: God's Warning Label (Hebrew 16)

This is the final of 16 shows on the amazing letter to the Hebrews. The author of Hebrews is writing this very sophisticated homily to Hebrew Christians sometime in the late 50s to mid 60’s CE. It is still an infant church, maybe a decade or two old, and had just survived disruptive expulsion and injustices due to their virulent faith. But make no mistake—persecution is coming and far worse than before. Nero may have already risen to be the Emperor of the Empire and it is only a matter of time until Christians will be horribly persecuted like never before in its short history.

The Author is passionate for the well-being and clarity of their faith and the rescuing redemptive work of the Kingdom through them. But he is obviously worried, referring to their faith as drifting and dull, their understanding of their faith and their calling being just infantile Christian.

So what’s the cure? You may not like it. God’s Plan A is not what we might think, and there is no Plan B. Welcome to Hebrews: The Bible’s Warning Label.

Benefit of New Covenant to Real People (Hebrews 13)

Hey Dr. Bill Senyard here with God’s love for the unlovable and Gospel Rant podcast. Welcome to my series on the book of Hebrews. We will knock out the important Chapter 10 in this show. Often scholars emphasize the differences between the effectiveness of the temple in the Old Covenant and the work of Jesus in the New Covenant. Chapter 10 is about that for sure, but I am going to suggest that the larger issue is about how God-followers are affected, or not affected by each. You will see what I mean. If you haven’t listened to the last show, I am building upon it quite a bit.

Look the idea is this. The theology of the two sacrifices is great, important and very interesting. But for the most part, most of us already know this. The thing that could just change our lives, change how we worship God, and change how we treat each other is in how we understand what the sacrifice was designed to accomplish for each of us individually. Let me put it another way. Have you drifted away from your original joy of your salvation? Do you wonder if you are a disappointment to Jesus? Are you tired of going to church because you just end up feeling more guilty and ashamed? If yes to any of these, I think that you will love this show. Hebrew's Main Point! (Hebrews (12)

Hey Dr. Bill Senyard here with Gospel App ministries and Gospel Rant Podcast. Thanks for listening. We have a lot to cover today, two chapters, 8 &9. They represent a single argument or sermon. Very important. Very relevant today. We will dip into some weeds, but the punch line is golden.

Review. From what we have seen in previous shows, the prime targeted audience of the book of Hebrews is Messianic Jews, believers, but they are observably ‘drifting’, ‘dull’, and suffering from ‘dead works’ (nekron ergon). I am going to suggest that we are all prone to all three. It is time we start admitting it. In 6:1, he says they should have moved past trying to repent of their dead works (nekron ergon)—hold on to that phrase. We will see it again.

In that mode, it seems that they were abandoning meeting with their gathered brothers and sisters in Christ and running back to find solace in Judaism again, or to the Jewish mystery religions. Both look pretty good on paper, but they are powerless to clean the conscience of a backslider. To make it worse, real persecution is coming, Nero—and their guilt-stricken faith will be shattered and rendered ineffective. They will feel orphaned.

So in this show, chapters 8 & 9 we will cover three points that are ridiculously relevant today.

The problem—what are these dead works.
What they have been doing to fix the problem—that isn’t working no matter how hard they try
The real remedy then and today.

Believe me when I say that #3 is the big deal for the author of Hebrews, not the argument leading up to it. You will see what I mean. Such good news. If we get stuck on the argument, we end up with mere theology that doesn’t help hurting and lonely people today.

Who the Heck Is Melchizedek? (Hebrews 10)

So who is Melchizedek?

Context? In Gen 14, Abraham had just won a surprising, miraculous military victory and is headed home. Two Kings came out to meet him in the King’s Valley (west of Jerusalem?). The King of Sodom, a picture of unrighteousness, self-focus, arrogance, hey, what about me? Attitude—who had already been defeated by the army that Abraham just defeated with 318 men—oh the shame and embarrassment. He will demand “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.” Very arrogant and ungrateful. No joy.

Then there is the mysterious Melchizedek, the king of Salem (unknown, perhaps early Jerusalem?) who is also the King of righteousness (other-oriented, sacrificial, not a hey-what-about-me? Attitude) and the King of Peace. He blessed Abraham. The anti-Sodom.

Attachment Theory for Parents of Teens Simplified

I am very concerned about the well-being of teens and tweens today. Frustrated parents, we need big time help. I mean Captain Obvious right? Per the CDC, suicide and homicide rates (10-24) are the highest they have been in decades (since 1968). A shocking 42% of adolescents are experiencing sadness and hopelessness (up 50% from 2011)--57% of females. 22% of all students have considered attempting suicide (up 36% from 2011). It is a mental health crisis for one of our most vulnerable demographics, adolescents. Anxiety is up. Loneliness is up [i]. Gender dysphoria, confusion up. Religion and church attendance is down.[ii]

Today, I want to give you a simplified class on attachment theory related to teens. I think that you will find things that just might help. How can already good enough parents of teens and tweens become just a little bit more good enough parents? Everything I say will have a firm biblical foundation while informed by attachment theory and neuroscience.

We will look at the important notion of attunement in relationships, particularly with your teen and tween. We will go deeper into the two main attachment theory categories of children’s insecure behavior—don’t worry about getting lost in the weeds. I’ve got you. I will give you some helpful tips to help them become a little more secure. I will also say a little about social media and its dangers.

What is Sabbath Anyway? (Hebrews 9)

Is this important? Yeah, the author of Hebrews starts off this section with a stark warning to the Jewish Christians in Rome (likely). Phobeomai! Beware lest---be afraid if you miss this… Defcon 1. Don’t screw this one up. Pretty important. Make sure that no one has missed it or fallen short. So what do you think? Have we? Has anyone around you? Your church? Or do you claim ignorance? Fun right?

In this show, we will explore what he is talking about. Believe me, it is not about sleeping more. It is not even about keeping the one-day-a-week sabbath free from work—not like what we typically think. In fact, he will ramp it up even more—This thing, this place of rest—we should be entering into it every day 24/7. Why is it that no one has ever told you about this?

Two Faiths? (Hebrews 8)

Welcome to the Gospel Rant.

Hebrews assumes that we Christians are, in spite of what we say, here still on planet earth for a reason only secondarily for our own success and well-being. Face it, heaven would be so much better. No we have a grand celestial eternal purpose, modeled by Jesus and Moses. We are here to be part of the salvation story of others. We don’t redeem anyone. But somehow, what we do, and how we do it proclaims salvation to them. That’s the good news. The bad news is that like Jesus and Moses, and Israel in the wilderness, that goal may only be achieved through our persecution, suffering and even harm. I don’t like it much either. It is the big theme of Hebrews.

Humanly speaking, you will shudder in fear and rather stay in your tents in the wilderness. No judgement. But you, sons and daughters of God can ask for power, through the Spirit in your inner being to access heaven-born faith (willingness to be led into temptation, confidence in God, boldness) and heaven-born righteousness (caring for others over self) so that like Jesus and Moses and at least two Jews in the wilderness, you will do it—in order to rescue and save others.

We Americans hate this plan. But the template is Jesus, who willingly suffered and died and many children were saved. At one point you said, “Father, wherever you lead I will follow.” OK, he’s taking you seriously—because he loves you as much as the father loves the son and the son loves the father. But don’t expect life to be a rose garden. And he has something to prepare you for the struggle. You don’t naturally have it. Curious?

Afraid of Death? (Hebrews 7)

New Historical Fiction Book Hot Off The Press!!!

Welcome to The Rabboni. This new biblical historical fiction tells of the long-lost journals of the Apostle Matthew. It is 73CE, Matthew had finally completed his biography of the life of Jesus. God Ordained Persecution? (Hebrews 5)

Is there such a thing as God-ordained persecution for Jesus-followers? Isn't that a bad thing? How could that be the will of a good father? Great questions. I agree and yet the author of Hebrews seems to see it more clearly than we modern Christians. We must get back to this awareness.

It seems that the author of Hebrews knew that persecution was coming for his listeners—and that is not Plan B, it is Plan A. Did you know that according to Open Doors, 365 Million Christians suffer high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith? 1 in 7 Christians are persecuted worldwide. Almost 5000 were killed for faith-related reasons last year. 14,766 churches and Christian properties were attacked. If Hebrews is right, it’s coming here and it’s for our higher good—to put it another way, it is a gift from God for his children he loves. Sounds very strange, right? I am not saying that I like the plan, just saying. Here’s a headline, if you are not being persecuted for your faith and love for the unloved, the implication is that something’s wrong.

Persecution IS Plan "A" (Hebrews 4)

100,000 Churches Closing???

Crazy right? Dr. Bill Senyard here with Gospel App Ministries, Good Enough Parent and the Gospel Rant Podcast.

40 million people have stopped going to church in the last 30 years. In 2019, the year before COVID, far more protestant churches closed than opened in the US. The average congregation size is now less than half what it was in 2000. 1/3 of churchgoers are 65 or older. Summary, far fewer churches, even so, each still is suffering decreasing attendance, and is notably greying.

Per Christianity Today, church closures are predicted to snowball. By 2025, 100,000 North American churches could close their doors. Someone called it the Great Dechurching. This is happening at the very same time that so many Americans are feeling increasingly anxious and lonely. New survey shows that one in three said they feel lonely at least once a week. Worse, one in 10 Americans say they feel lonely every day. But, they are not thinking that churches are the answer. Sad. What’s up?

God's Love for the Unlovable: The Silencing of Eros

Did you know that the Greek word eros (where we get erotic) is not even in the New Testament? Only used twice in the Green Old Testament. And yet, we modern Christians, like the Ancient Romans are terrified of eros. The Romans even tried to legislate against it. It did not work very well. Our views of love have been widely informed by C.S. Lewis’ Four Loves (agape, eros, phileo and storge). Every Sunday School child knows that agape is “God’s love”, right? Well it turns out that ‘agape’ is actually one of the generic Greek words for love. It has a broad group of meanings. Jesus says that even the tax collectors do it. Just saying.

Instead of seeing love broken into four separate categories, the Biblical writers see love as more holistic (including all four aspects of Lewis’ loves) but on a spectrum from ‘selfish’ to 'selfless.’ God’s love is perfectly selfless agape, phileo, storge, and yes, eros. There is a godly eros. The selfish form of eros (Greek: porneia) is the love that terrified the Romans, that Paul wrote against often, and makes modern Christians uncomfortable. Unfortunately, we have tossed the ‘baby’ (i.e., godly eros) out with the ‘bathwater’ (porneia). We need to adjust our understanding, or drift more into irrelevance.

God's Love for the Unlovable: The Ancient History of Love

I have come to believe, based upon a lot of research that our Western view of love, including our western Christian view of love, has much more in common with the Ancient Romans than Paul. Example? The Ancient Romans truly believed that love is a function of the object (per Plato and of course Pygmalion). Let me unpack a bit. If an object (art, drama, person) is beautiful, they should expect to be lovable and loved. If they do not fit with the cultural norms of beauty (size, personality, skin color, sex, etc.) they should not expect to be loved unless they remove all uglies and stigmas. This is such bad news for the vast majority of the population who don’t fit in the ‘right’ categories. I just finished a video review of the summer’s blockbuster movie Barbie. This is at the very heart of the movie's moral messaging. This is not Jesus’ message at all. Jesus’ love actually loves the unlovable. His is the love that eventually brought the Roman Empire to its knees.

God’s Love for the Unlovable: Your Brain In Love

Welcome to our new series, God’s Love for the Unlovable. It’s the stark wonderful and frightening truth, God’s love is for the unlovable, the unlovely, and the unloved.

That’s all of us on any given day if we were just a little bit honest.

How has the creator God wonderfully made my brain so that it can love others and be loved, even in trying circumstances? We will get into the fun neuroscience of “falling in love.” It is very interesting and geared toward laypersons. The point? When I experience the “height, width, length and depth of the love of Christ" (Eph 3), the Holy Spirit—no doubt—ignites the very same parts of our brain. We feel like we are "falling in love with Jesus” and that he is “falling in love with us.” Of course we know that he has never stopped loving us—but it sure feels like it. I was preaching on this very topic on Valentine’s Sunday at a church. During the break between services, five men, total strangers, sought me out to tell me that they believe that they were experiencing the love of Christ that day—maybe for the first time in a long while. I think that some were converted. It is a fresh look at how we fall in love with Christ again. Enjoy!

Why Did Jesus Die For You? (SOS27)

The events in the Queen’s life—just like us-- relationships, choices, context had beat her up and sucked substance and identity away from her. Until the King. And the King’s powerful gaze. Now, she makes a splash. She is different. Her own testimony—don’t take my word for it. From the beginning I said that this was the greatest gospel presentation in the Old Testament. This is the answer to the question, why did Jesus die for me, for you? Was it so that I wouldn’t be punished for my crimes and choices against God? Yes. But he accomplished so much more. Jesus also died to purchase all of the love in the Universe for me. It is now mine. There is no more that I get later. But, the problem now is that my midbrain is so messed up that I have a hard time getting that love. In fact, so many of us struggle with being lovable or not. Why? Our midbrains are doing a great job at protecting us from being hurt—but as a result, we can’t experience the love of Christ for us.

We have learned to fake it. We have learned to deny that we are afraid that that one day when we see Jesus face to face, we will see great disappointment in his eyes.

The Ancient Feminist (SOS26)

The Song of Songs is ridiculously modern. Have you heard of the female gaze in films and TV projects? These are the projects that present the POV of the woman, not from the lens of a male director or writer, but from the POV of a woman. Some modern feminists think that this revolution started a decade ago. Not so. It's over 2500 years old. She is presented as a person of substance and worth, the beloved of the King. Even more, she represents all followers of God, male and female, all who are in his embrace, though it is a surprise to us all.

Women, if you have been tracking this series, and saying the SUG a couple of times a day, I need to ask you, in your own words, emotions and thoughts, are you beginning to see changes in you? Do you see what you are worth, your value, your true identity? Are you needing other sources of affirmation less? Are you more free? Are you feeling like you love others a little more? That’s our goal. Well? This has not been just a study to teach about a book. It is to tap into the power behind the book and begin to see frustrated, unloved and unlovable Christians begin to feel glory—all because of what Jesus did and Jesus’ Spirit is now doing?

In the second half of Movement 6 we see a different woman—well she’s the same—but something has changed. She is more inquisitive, more cheerful, more loving, more confident. I will show you five new freedoms that she has. Gone is the paranoid, shame ridden woman who is hiding behind a lattice, carrying old wounds on her sleeve, and running to the city to get affirmation and dope hits. She is more her—excuse the bad grammar. I am guessing that is what you want to be as well.

This is what the Gospel power can begin to do within us— a little or a lot this side of heaven. It really should be noticeable.

Hinnal Yapha Ra'yati! (SOS22)

Hopefully you have been following the last 4 shows on this very important Movement 4 of the Song of Songs. There was the shocking betrothal of the Great King and this very unworthy emotionally shredded bride with a secret shame. Then the great marriage procession, likely following two aborted processions, the original runaway bride. Then the public proclamation of the King’s love for her in front of friends, family and dignitaries—and of course the consummation, the yichud, the event that she had been terrified of from the beginning. Why? Because, there, her dark private secrets are going to become public. And she is right. Except that the love of this King does its best work with unsuitable brides, unworthy brides. In their consummation, his reputation is not soiled by her or her uglies. Her reputation is raised up by his glory. We have never seen anything like it.

Just Married! (SOS21)

Here’s where we are in the central movement of the Song. The Queen is betrothed to the King. He has come for her to complete the marriage process in a grand marriage procession. Arguably twice she has left him hanging at the altar—in an ancient Mideastern context. She wasn’t ready when he came for her. Something is wrong. Now the wedding celebration has at last begun. He has toasted her with an amazing worship poem, a wasfs—in front of all of the esteem guests in the land and told her that she is so, so beautiful in his eyes. She is beginning to believe it—but in moments, her past mistakes, her dark secrets are going to be publicly exposed which could lead to immediate divorce, immense public shame for her and her family and maybe even her death.

Now what? And what difference does it make in my life, your life today? We’ll see.

The Great Sex Rescue 2 (SOS17)

Movement #5. Christian men and woman are longing for real intimacy—we are tired of fake it til you make it, or your role is this and my role is this—just do it, or there are no roles, that should work. Worthy of ongoing dialogue, but the priority is that we, both sexes need healing. On paper, I get it. In the bed and in the heart, they are not working. The SOS shows us why.

“Sex can’t be intimate if you feel like you don’t matter.” The Great Sex Rescue, p. 28

Movement 5 is parallel to Movement 3. It is brilliant poetry. But we get to see an aspect of the Queen that she can no longer keep hidden. When the King Groom finds her, she cannot be vulnerable. She can’t be loved. She can’t love. She can’t have great sex. She can have intercourse—sure, but not the intimacy and closeness that she wants. The watchmen on the wall will not let her.

You can give her a book to read about intimacy, about sex, about true love. But she can’t. She needs a transforming power that rewires her beat up brain.

Point? This is where the King’s love finds all of us. We are so shredded emotionally and relationally we just can’t get there. Until…

Bottom line? Man, woman, do you want great sex—not just more intercourse? Check it out. In this movement and in particularly in Movement 4, we will show you how to get there.

No shame, no working harder. That is not the core problem. You may be surprised. You need healing.

Sex In The City (SOS 15)

The Queen is so messed up and needy when God finds her, finds me today, that she triggers, emotionally dysregulates and runs away from his arms— to the city. It is irrational, it is self-destructive, it is counter everything that she wants and yet, her midbrain is in charge. Do we do that? Have you ever gone through an entire worship service check out? Distant. Hardly plugged in? God is there with you, loving you with all of the love in the universe. The Spirit is in your inner-being and you are largely oblivious. Maybe for a day or week, or month or even years. There is no ’sex’ in that city, only intercourse.

What Women Want

What do women want? You do not become whole through legislation. You do not become whole by muscling through insecurities. Even counseling has limitations of what it can do. Women, you want the same thing that men want. Significance, security and belonging. But…nothing has hurt you more than your searching for significance, security and belonging.

We are on Movement 3 of the 7 movement Song of Songs. Somethings don’t change. The Queen bride is alone again and longing for something—she is not even sure what that ‘something is.’ Someone called it a nagging murmur of discontent. Do you know what that is? Sure you do. She thinks she knows, but when the King arrives, her reactionary behavior kicks in and she blows it. More shame, more sense of failure, more reactionary behavior.

Testimony of an Impure Woman (SOS9)

If they have had sex (whatever we mean by that, or our girls thinks it means), they are stigmas in the eyes of God and bad. Linda Kay Klein, author of "Pure", describes it this way, "The purity message is not about sex. Rather, it is about us: who we are, who we are expected to be, and who it is said we will become if we fail to meet those expectations. This is the language of shame.” The Song of Songs pushes against the consequences of such a message. There is a powerful love that can begin to heal the shame. There is a God who truly does love the unlovable, who loves the shamed, even the impure. We can show such a beat-up woman how to enter that embrace—as she is.

SPECIAL GOSPEL RANT: Talk More, Listen Less!

This podcast is an important one-and-out message that could just change your life. D. Martyn Lloyd Jones said, “Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them, but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So he stands up and says, “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.”

I agree—BUT...for we Christians, there are not just two options, either Stop Listening and start talking. There is a third. We can talk the gospel to our midbrain. That is what we are all about. What does gospel-talking to your “self’ look like and feel like?

Here is the place where this message and the Song of Songs connect. The Queen is riddled and strangled by negative self-talk. Nothing, including any positive self-talk makes a difference. She is stuck still ‘dark-yet-lovely’. Until, the King ’talks’ into her ’self’. That is the ’talk’ that can actually rewire and revive our self.

Welcome to Gospel Rant. Dr. Bill is continuing on this eye-opening radical journey through the Sermon on the Mount (not a sermon or a mount). It is not a sermon or a lecture, it is a dialogue. Feel free to agree or disagree. It is a rant. In this Podcast we are in a new section of the sermon on the mount. Jesus is addressing the accepted three pillars of Judaism, almsgiving, prayer and fasting. He begins each section, “When you…” What is the accepted godly way to do acts of righteousness (i.e., almsgiving)? Do you mean that it is not enough to give to charity? There is more? Yes and no. A Different Kind of Christmas Pageant- Introduction

Hey, it's Christmas again and time for Gospel Rant's annual Christmas podcast series. This year we want to expand our typical children's Christmas pageant stage to bring out some of the lesser known things about the story and characters that should make the story jump off the usual small 12x12 pageant stage.

What do we know about Herod--really? What was going on in that region and time that made it so dark? Have you ever heard a Christmas sermon about the shamed priest Zechariah? What about the unnamed Magi and the unclean shepherds--what important role did they have? All of this will have modern rings to it.

Don't Resist Being Hurt? Really??? (SOM 42)

Tough passage in the Sermon on the Mount. Historically, it has been the source of a lot of misunderstanding and harm. Is Jesus telling a rape victim to not resist? A black teen who is being treated unjustly that they shouldn't do something? Or a spouse that he/she should go back and submit to an abusive spouse because of obedience to Jesus???? GOD HELP US! NO. There is another way of understanding Jesus' comments in light of the entirety of the Sermon on the Mount. Help us get this podcast out there to people who have been so hurt by teaching on this that enables abuse and injustice.

I figured that since I was doing all of this research for myself, I might as well share it with my rant family. It is an eight part series. In the fourth podcast, I will review for you my expanded translation of 1 Thessalonians. It is in my opinion, the most transparent, humble and naked of all of Paul's letters. It badly needs an editor. It is as if Paul is speaking off the cuff, pouring out his heart, sharing his anxiety, fears, doubts and joys with these new converts who he thought would have turned their backs on him. Great stuff. It is very much like the previous command, don’t be angry, don’t belittle anyone with your words or actions, or even a nasty look. Sure, we agree, but how? That condemns us all. And the suggestion that if you feel lust, you should remove an eye? Is he being literal? Is hell really at stake? Is he ramping the law up that high? Or, is he being wonderfully satirical???? And somehow we stopped getting the joke. Let’s see. Come all who struggle with lust or porn. Good news.

I am here, taking your part, and the Kingdom I bring is especially for you!” (160)

The 2022 Easter Resurrection Gospel Rant

Every year we take a short hiatus from our regularly scheduled podcasts (Gospel Rant and The Forgiving Path) to focus on what the death and resurrection of Jesus really mean for us today. What difference does it make to real people living in an increasingly frightening and violent world?

What Jesus did should leave us open-mouthed--with a lack of words. No one else loves us anywhere near that much. We don't love ourselves that much. Such a disproportionate loving will be to a certain degree uncomfortable and unnerving for such undeserving objects of that loving. In fact, the closer we get --by the Holy Spirit's power-- to actually experience even a little of the height, width, length and depth of the adoring gaze of Jesus, the louder that critical inner voice in our head testifies that it is dangerous to believe it as true. This is the normal human inner struggle for we very imperfect, shame-prone, and often unloveable Jesus followers--never more so than during the Easter season when we tend to focus on the shortcomings of the last year.

Jesus' feelings of honor toward us (that's exactly what he expressed on the Cross--among so many other things) at such a great cost to him seems too good to be true. Why? Because it is.

What If I Think That God is Angry With Me?

This ain’t your parent’s Sunday School class.

We have got nothing personally against Sunday School. Our main host, Dr. Bill Senyard was a Lead Pastor for over 25 years. It's just that churches serve a declining number people—each loved by God. Did you know that 2/3rds of young adults have left churches. One researcher has predicted that 20% of churches shutter their doors in the next 18 months. In 1990, only 7% of Americans reported having no religion. Thirty years later, in 2020, the percentage claiming to be nonreligious had quadrupled, with almost 3 in 10 Americans having no religion. There are now more nonreligious Americans than affiliates of any one single religious tradition, including the two largest: Catholicism and evangelical Protestantism.

We are a single generation from becoming a post-Christian nation.

Why? You may not like these reasons or you may get defensive but here they are.
1) Churches are seen as largely irrelevant
2) Churches are considered unsafe places
3) Churches are just irrelevant, as uncivil as every other institution.

Time to change. Whether you agree or not, the Gospel Rant is meant to be a unique mind-clearing elixir—not everybody’s cup of tea for sure. This ain’t your parent’s Sunday School class.

We have got nothing personally against Sunday School. Our main host, Dr. Bill Senyard was a Lead Pastor for over 25 years. It's just that churches serve a declining number people—each loved by God. Did you know that 2/3rds of young adults have left churches. One researcher has predicted that 20% of churches shutter their doors in the next 18 months. We are a single generation from becoming a post-Christian nation.

Why? You may not like these reasons or you may get defensive but here they are.
1) Churches are seen as largely irrelevant
2) Churches are considered unsafe places
3) Churches are just as uncivil as every other institution.

Time to change. Whether you agree or not, the Gospel Rant is meant to be a unique mind-clearing elixir—not everybody’s cup of tea for sure. Gospel Rant Shame Meter 2020: Oscar Nominated Films—Little Women

Last year we looked at each of the Oscar nominated Best Picture Films and ranked them related to the prevalence of shame in the film. We created a "Shame-Meter" that ranks films 0-10, with 0 being no shamed loneliness and 10 being abusive and de-humanizing shame and painful brain loneliness. It was surprising just how core shame and shaming was to the stories last year. Our contention is that we as a society have grown nose-blind to shame and its destructive power in our identities, families, and communities. If we can't see it, we clearly can't dialogue about it. It is at the root of so much incivility and loneliness today. So every year, we try to "out” shame and let loneliness out of the stigma closet.

I think that we are bored to tears, with so little change to show.
