From Spiritual Dryness to Open-Handed Faith | Steven Navarro

Sat, 03 Oct 2026 05:00:00 +0000

In this episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teal sits down for part three of a deep-dive conversation with missionary and writer Steven Navarro. Picking up in 2022 after seven years with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Amsterdam, Steven shares his candid, vulnerable journey through what St. John of the Cross named the "Dark Night of the Soul".

Despite coming off a spiritually rich season memorizing the Gospel of Luke and experiencing intense corporate worship, Steven found himself entering a profound, multi-year season of spiritual dryness where traditional forms of devotion no longer brought a sense of God’s presence. Through silence, solitude, and guidance from mentors, he learned to embrace spiritual disequilibrium—moving from a performance-based, fix-it mindset toward an open-handed, contemplative faith.

Key Takeaways & Topics Covered

Transition and Estrangement: Moving from leading Discipleship Training Schools (DTS) to joining a creative collective named Mosaic in YWAM Amsterdam left Steven feeling like a "fish out of water" amid broader life and faith transitions.
The Onset of Spiritual Dryness: After a season of deep spiritual intimacy in Orlando, Florida, Steven returned to Amsterdam and began experiencing a withdrawal from the tangible presence of God during church services and prayer meetings. The harder he tried to "push in" or perform, the drier it felt.
Discovering the Contemplative Tradition: Reading Richard Foster’s Streams of Living Water helped Steven realize his spiritual dryness was not a sign of broken faith, but a well-documented historic Christian experience known across traditions as the "Dark Night of the Soul" or "spiritual disequilibrium".
Practicing Silence and Solitude: Guided by mentors, Steven learned to sit on a quiet bench in Amsterdam for hours, allowing the "sand and dirt" of hurry and noise to settle so he could simply be present with God without needing to perform.
Unconventional Places of Encounter: While standard devotional routines felt dry, Steven unexpectedly encountered God’s presence in three distinct areas:
1. Everyday, mundane moments (making a sandwich in his apartment).
2. Creative writing (crafting fiction and sci-fi stories late at night).
3. High liturgy services (participating in Catholic Mass, Anglican, and Orthodox spaces).
Open-Handed Faith and Spiritual Maturity: Moving away from rigid, single-stream definitions of worship allowed Steven to cultivate gratitude for all traditions within the Body of Christ and step into a role of spiritual parenthood.
Incarnational Spirituality in the Everyday: Drawing on authors like Parker Palmer and Brother Lawrence, the episode highlights that your daily life—whether changing diapers, driving a truck, or frying an egg—is the exact "school" where the Holy Spirit desires to meet you.
Short Story Feature ("Shooting Star"): Steven closes the interview by reading a poignant original short story exploring the tension between wonder, doubt, and holding onto fleeting moments of beauty.

Inside the Peanut Butter Bowl: Celebrating 10 Years of Feeding Communities

Sat, 15 Aug 2026 05:00:00 +0000

In this episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teel reflects on a major milestone: the 10th anniversary of the Peanut Butter Bowl. What started in 2016 as a single high school rivalry matchup between Johnson and Brandeis in San Antonio has grown into a statewide movement involving over 120 high school coaches and communities across Texas. Steve shares the story behind the initiative, celebrates the incredible milestone of over 456,000 pounds of peanut butter collected—which translates to feeding over 1.8 million people—and honors the coaches, volunteers, and hunger relief organizations that make it all possible.

Key Highlights & Topics Covered:

The Genesis of a Movement: How a warehouse tour at Daily Bread Ministries and a connection with local high school football coaches sparked the idea to fight weekend childhood hunger.
10 Years of Impact: Celebrating 200+ tons of peanut butter collected and 1.8 million people fed through local food banks and hunger relief organizations.
The Power of Leadership: Recognizing the high school coaches, assistant coaches, and student-athletes who have championed the cause, expanded the network city by city, and inspired feeder elementary and middle schools to get involved.
Teamwork Behind the Scenes: Highlighting the dedicated crew—from hunger relief coordinators and media teams to graphic designers and web developers—who keep the operation running smoothly.
Every Jar Matters: Reaffirming that whether a school collects 100 jars or 12,000 pounds, every donation brings food, fuel, and hope to a family in need.
Faith & Community Action: A call to action on the power of prayer, servant leadership, and bringing a competitive fire to serving others.

Key Takeaways:

Small Steps, Huge Multiplication: A simple idea paired with faithful action can grow beyond expectations to feed millions.
Community Unity Over Rivalry: High school rivalries on the field can turn into powerful partnerships off the field to serve the less fortunate.
Leadership Begins Young: Involving elementary and middle school students in donation drives builds a lifelong culture of service and empathy.

An Unexplainable Miracle & a Calling to Serve: The Eternal Impact of a Coach | Joey Saxe

Sat, 13 Jun 2026 05:00:00 +0000

In this powerful episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teel sits down with Coach Joey Saxe, the newly appointed Assistant Athletic Director for Corpus Christi ISD and former head football coach at Akins High School in Austin. Coach Saxe shares his incredible journey of leadership, transitioning from a Title I high school football stadium to a larger district platform designed to resource and champion the next generation of educators and athletes.

At the heart of this conversation is a breathtaking, unexplainable miracle. Coach Saxe opens up for the first time about his son Easton’s 100-day battle in the NICU after being born at just two pounds. He recounts the exact moment he prayed in a hospital chapel, asking God to transfer his son’s pain onto himself—only to witness a medical anomaly weeks later when severe brain bleeds completely resolved themselves, leaving doctors entirely speechless.

Beyond the miracle, this episode is a masterclass in servant leadership. You will hear the genius "secret sauce" behind how Coach Saxe grew the Austin-area Peanut Butter Bowl into a community powerhouse—utilizing popsicles, pizza parties, and high school mascots to collect over a ton of peanut butter for local food banks. From achieving a 100% senior graduation rate to intentionally embedding core values across an entire school campus, Coach Sacks proves that a whistle is a tool for eternal transformation.

Key Takeaways From This Episode:

The Power of a Visionary Coach: Why the lights on the stadium field eventually turn off for everyone, and why anchoring student-athletes in academics changes generations long after sports are over.
The NICU Miracle: A raw, firsthand testimony of a father’s desperate prayer, a physical manifestation of taking on a son's pain, and a medical resolution that secular science could only call "unexplainable."
Bridging the Campus Divide: How Coach Saxe built deep, intentional relationships with classroom teachers—from helping them unpack cars on day one to orchestrating formal, team-wide appreciation nights.
The Peanut Butter Bowl Blueprint: Practical advice for young coaches on how to turn a simple community service project into a highly competitive, massive multi-school movement.
Answering the Call: Understanding when to stay, when to step through an open door, and how to constantly strive to leave a place better than you found it.

"Coaches will impact more kids in one year than most people will in their entire lives." — Billy Graham

101 MPH Faith: Journey from Tommy John Surgery to All-Star Closer | Jacob Coats

Sat, 06 Jun 2026 05:00:00 +0000

What does it take to keep grinding when the stadium lights fade, your organization is no longer behind you, and you are left facing a grueling two-year recovery entirely on your own?

In this powerful episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teel sits down for a dynamic third interview with professional baseball pitcher and certified flamethrower, Jacob Coats. After touching an unofficial 101 MPH on the radar gun and pitching within the Houston Astros organization, Jacob faced a career-altering hurdle: a torn UCL ligament requiring major Tommy John surgery.

Jacob opens up about the silent, lonely two-year battle of rehabilitation without a team holding him accountable, the profound mental and spiritual warfare he faced in empty training facilities, and the unique motivating factors—including family, his fiancee Emily, and the future dream of playing catch with his own children—that kept him from walking away.

Fast forward to last season: signed by the Gary SouthShore RailCats, Jacob transitioned into a dominant new role as a true, high-adrenaline closer. He shares what it felt like to lock down 13 saves, post a 2.89 ERA, hold opposing hitters to a staggering .195 average, and ultimately earn a spot at the 2025 American Association All-Star Game.

Beyond the stats, this conversation pulls back the curtain on the raw reality of independent baseball—from 11-hour overnight bus rides and bed bugs to the incredible power of stadium chaplains and team prayers. More than anything, Jacob shares how he uses his baseball platform not for personal glory, but as a bold testament to God’s healing power and presence.

Key Takeaways & Highlights

The Mental & Spiritual Battle of Rehab: Jacob details the deep isolation of a two-year recovery outside of affiliated ball, explaining how he leaned on the power of prayer and explicitly rebuked negative thoughts to protect his mind during the hardest days.
Thriving Under Pressure in the 9th: Discover the strict, granular 12-to-14-hour daily routine of an independent ball player and why Jacob thrives on the "do-or-die" adrenaline of slamming the door shut as a closer.
The Reality of the "Indy Ball" Grind: A candid look at the unglamorous side of chasing a dream, featuring late-night drives, hostile hotel environments, and the deep player camaraderie built through shared struggle.
America's Pastime as a Platform: Why baseball serves as a unique bridge for patriotism, family connection, and spreading the Gospel.
A Full-Circle All-Star Moment: Jacob recalls his favorite highlights from the past season, including closing out a spectacular Friday night game with his parents on the field to watch the fireworks with him for the first time since his surgery.

"Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold." — 2 Corinthians 3:12

God's Power: Miracles, Gold Dust, & Global Missions | Steven Navarro

Sat, 23 May 2026 05:00:00 +0000

What happens when your theology collides with reality on the mission field? In this powerful episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teel sits down with San Antonio native Steven Navarro, who has spent the last 11 years serving across the globe with Youth With A Mission (YWAM). Fresh off the plane from Amsterdam, Steven shares incredible, firsthand accounts of the supernatural—from a shriveled ear opening in a Bangkok street-food market to supernatural food multiplication at an orphanage, and the unexplainable appearance of gold dust and thick oil.

But this isn't just a collection of wild miracle stories. Steven opens up about the deep "spiritual dissonance" that occurs when you witness God move in power overseas while your own family members are facing severe illnesses back home. Diving into Matthew 11, Steven unpacks the profound question John the Baptist asked Jesus from a prison cell, uncovering a vital truth for every Christian navigating the tension between hard realities and supernatural faith.

Key Takeaways & Highlights

The Bangkok Street-Food Miracle: Steven recounts the nerve-wracking moment he felt a prompt from the Holy Spirit to pray for a Thai street-food vendor with a completely shriveled, deaf ear—and what happened when he stepped past the cultural barriers to touch it.
God's Power: Unpacking the phenomena of gold dust on Bibles and thick oil pooling in empty palms, Steven shares how his early skepticism gave way to viewing these unexplainable signs as gentle, encouraging "winks" of God's presence.
Why Miracles "Split the Room": A fascinating look into why supernatural breakthroughs often stir up complex emotions, sometimes leading to half the room rejoicing while the other half struggles with frustration or offense.
Navigating the Dissonance of Faith: How to handle the painful tension of seeing a stranger healed on the mission field while your own loved ones are still waiting for a miracle.
The Blessing of Not Being Offended: A beautiful, slide-by-slide deep dive into Christ’s response to John the Baptist in Matthew 11: "Blessed is the one who is not offended by me." Learn how to choose trust and protect your heart from spiritual resentment when God's timing doesn't match your expectations.

Steve Teel dives into scripture for a special teaching on this edition of Very Bold Radio!

Steve Teel walks through and talks through a story of waiting. Waiting for Jesus to answer, to show up, to do something. It’s John 11 where Mary and Martha are frustrated but faithful as Jesus does not immediately come to heal their brother’s illness. Steve also highlights Martha’s often overlooked faith and leadership as well as Jesus’ empathy with us and for us no matter what trouble, challenge, or problem we face. Jesus brings resurrection life and loves to involve us in his answer.

Very Bold Radio 4-6-24 with Ashley Bratcher

Sat, 06 Apr 2024 05:00:00 +0000

Steve interviews "Finding Faith" star Ashley Bratcher (also starred in "Unplanned") as they talk about Ashley finding faith in Jesus Christ with the birth of her son. In the following segment, Steve shares a message about facing mountains with Jesus' help. Steve and Ashley's conversation covers a lot in a short time: faith talk on how does Ashley describe herself in relationship to Christ, how she grew in her faith and the transformation that took place, the importance of forgiveness, as well as touching on softball, favorite burgers, and of course her new movie, Finding Faith, available on Great American Pure Flix right now. Though Ashley was a lead-off hitter in softball (not a lot of home runs expected there) Steve scores her Finding Faith performance as a Home Run. There's much more to Ashley Bratcher than this 15 minute conversation but this 15 minutes is pure joy!
Steve shares a brief (7 minutes) message on facing mountains with Jesus' help and how the "abundant life" Jesus offers works with those imposing mountains.

Very Bold Radio 3-16-24 with Ben Fuller

Sat, 16 Mar 2024 05:00:00 +0000

Steve Teel interviews singer-songwriter Ben Fuller on this edition of Very Bold Radio!

Steve Teel not only will carry Ben Fuller’s guitar case any day, he will interview him any day and twice on Tuesday. Ben is the singer songwriter of hits: Who I Am (8 million streams on Spotify alone), But The Cross, If I Got Jesus, and new songs you just have to hear for yourself: Proud (we go deep into this powerful song on Father-child relationships), Other Plans (what a story!) and many more.

In this interview Ben promises (threatens?) to do a backflip (shoutout Logan Cain), even sings a little “Cain”, and references conversation with the Cain band and Taylor Cain Matz about the power of God’s word and the dangers of neglecting God’s written word.

Ben talks about the blessing of the platforms given to musicians but also that we ALL have gifts from the Lord and must lean into our special gifts.

He shares a story on Mark Hall of Casting Crowns about being on stage and how easy it is to not invite the Holy Spirit to the party.

Ben is currently on tour with We Are Messengers and Jonathan Traylor and talks about the show being realness, sweet, kind, without the competition that sometimes can be found.

Most of the second half of the interview (16 minutes to 32 minutes) is spent going into the story (and backstory) of the song, Proud, as well as talking about how the love of God brings healing to relationships. This is powerful song and also powerful story here of how God can bring healing to father-child relationships.

Ben Fuller has depth in his relationship with Christ. That depth comes out in his songs and in his conversations and in this interview.

Caleb was told he’d never walk again, never talk again… #butGod Caleb learned not only to walk again, talk again… but now Caleb travels and walks and talks sharing the good news of his faith in Jesus Christ as a public speaker. Here in this two-part interview, Jeremy and Caleb recount the challenges their family faced … #butGod was bigger, stronger, more loving, than anyone could imagine. Very Bold Radio 7-1-23 with The Simpsons

Sat, 01 Jul 2023 05:00:00 +0000

Stephen and Brittney Simpson join Steve Teel on this edition of Very Bold Radio and Podcast!

"The Boy Who Swims With Jesus"

Steve Teel Interviews Steven & Brittany Simpson and even gets to meet Hunt: “The Boy Who Swims With Jesus.” Steven and Brittany recount the miraculous story of Jesus swimming with 1 ½ year old Hunt (now going into 6th grade).

Steven & Brittany Simpson (parents of Hunt, “the boy who swims with Jesus,”) recall when Hunt at 1 ½ years old fell into a pool (only God knows for how long) discovered by Grandma (“Honey”); paramedics revive Hunt and the process of getting him to hospital care begins. Under observation at the hospital, little Hunt walks the hall with his parents and stops for a length of time pointing at an angel statue, staring while Hunt pointed at the statue (there is a photo of this).

Fast-forward to a year or so later, and Hunt’s routine at his day school is to greet the statue of Jesus at his school, “hey, Jesus.” One day, Hunt tells his mom, “Jesus was in Honey’s (grandma) pool.” Brittany replied, “What did you say?” Hunt repeats, “Jesus was in Honey’s pool.”

Steve, Steven, and Brittany talk more about the impact this encounter with Jesus has had on the entire Simpson family.

Very Bold Radio 6-17-23 with Rocco Grimaldi

Sat, 17 Jun 2023 05:00:00 +0000

Rocco Grimaldi joins host Steve Teel on this edition of Very Bold Radio.

Rocco Grimaldi is one of only 4 Americans to ever be the leading scorer at the World Hockey Championships. Since 1950, only Rocco (May 2023) and Patrick Kane (2018) have accomplished this feat. In 10 games, Rocco’s balanced 7 goals to go with 7 assists in Finland for a total of 14 points. On Team USA, his line of Alex Tuch (Buffalo Sabres) and Nick Bonino (Pittsburgh Penguins) helped lead the Americans to an unprecedented and undefeated run through the preliminary group (7-0) including wins over defending World Champion Finland, and a clinching group victory over the powerful Swedes. Though Team USA lost to Germany in the semis, Rocco’s goal and assist helped get the team to a 3 on 3 overtime. The final game also went to a 3 on 3 overtime loss against Latvia, though Rocco added two goals and was named to the All-Tournament team. Not quite as impressive a feat, Rocco is the most interviewed guest on Very Bold Radio & Podcast with Steve Teel.

Very Bold Radio 3-18-23 with Dr. Brandon Crooms

Sat, 18 Mar 2023 05:00:00 +0000

Dr. Brandon Crooms joins host Steve Teel on this edition of Very Bold Radio.

Be inspired every Saturday by difference-makers on Very Bold Radio and Podcast.

Dr Brandon Crooms PhD from University of Texas, and professor at Trinity University in Sports Management. He also leads Crooms Collective and produces the ATX Dad Show and is a mentor, speaker, and coach offering Special Ops.

We talk some basketball to get started with Brandon being from the Tarheel State.

0:00-10:00

Special Ops is for high school athletes looking for support and mentorship. Dr. Crooms offers these athletes advice and wisdom from personal experience. “Youth need other people that are a few steps ahead of them to believe in them and to see certain things in them that they may not see.”

Brandon’s own identity as a high school athlete was immersed in sports. Dr. Crooms says that limits yourself. He did grow up in a Christian home with both parents being preacher’s kids.

10:00-17:00

Dr. Crooms PhD dissertation and research at UT was in black male high school athletes and their racial identity and the influence of faith.

He surveyed 300 athletes and sat down face-to-face with about 20 of them: Faith - Race - Sports.

Dr. Crooms explains that research has shown that the African-American community has a higher identity in sports than their white counterparts.

That can play into the stereotype that these athletes are “dumb jocks.”

17:00-28:00

Making that transition when the ball goes flat.

The faith component you hear athletes talk about the faith component in press conferences.

Dr. Crooms wanted to dive into their faith and their racial experiences. He talks about the research he discovered how race plays a role in sport - those assumptions on which sports they would excel at. Maybe a student wants to explore creative dance or entrepreneurship and would be discouraged by others.

28:00-36:00

The positive is that these students had mentors or role models that could help them navigate sport-faith-race.

Dr. Crooms talks about his faith can help athletes navigate as their athletic careers wind down. Dr. Crooms explains the good news of Jesus giving purpose to those who accept that gift. From personal experience Brandon had torn his ACL while working on his dissertation but was able to see the blessing of relating to these students. He then talks about how relevant the Scriptures are to facing adversity, challenges and wins and defeats.

36:00-45:00

He talks about his training called Special Ops and then also about Crooms Collective as he is a professional and sought out speaker (China. South Africa,) and consultant and the visionary for The Dad Show ATX. This show empowers and encourages dads.

45:00-50:00

Henry Jarju Part 5 The Finale

In this concluding episode we pick back up with Henry attending DTS for Youth With A Mission in January 2020 which is curtailed by the COVID Pandemic.

During this time, Henry’s friend starts a ministry to bring food to people that are homebound. Of course, Henry is all in for helping out. He enlists YWAM’s help to do so and they share the gospel and pray with people living in isolation and loneliness. This ministry has continued to this day.

Henry decides during his DTS (Discipleship Training School) that he wants to go deeper into Bible knowledge. He observes David who was going through SBS (School of Biblical Studies, a further step available after DTS), constantly studying and reading his Bible.

0:00-12:00

Henry discusses God’s call to him and his fiancé to move to Italy to be a missionary there and support refugees who are trying to find their way. They will work at the YWAM base there and know that with all his experiences as a refugee they will be able to encourage, love, disciple, and train other refugees. Ever the learner, Henry may also take an online pastoral course. This will be at YWAM Ragusa in Sicily, Italy.

Steve reminds listeners and viewers that God may call them to support Henry and his fiancé’s new mission work.

12:00-22:00 Henry, David, and Steve move towards the conclusion of this special series.

Steve invites Henry and David to share closing remarks and thoughts. David shares that Henry is such a great representation of the image of God as loving one another.

Steve asks Henry to close our 5 part series with a prayer in the language of his choice. Henry chooses Mandinka, which is spoken as a first-language by the most Gambians: 38%.

Henry Jarju Part 4

Steve and David Teel both introduce Part 4 talking about how Henry’s setbacks, experiences, and challenges parallel the apostle Paul’s many experiences. Henry’s reading of the Bible and Acts has a depth of understanding that most of us could not fathom. 0:00-8:00Back to the Mediterranean Sea and the sinking boat where Henry and other refugees think this is the end. Help finally arrives as the refugees get to international waters and a rescue team arrives on jet skis with life jackets. It takes a full day once they are on the big rescue boat to make it to Italy. 8:00-17:00 Arriving in Italy … finally! July to November he remains in Italy. His mom on the phone tells Henry that before he passed, his dad had declared that Henry would make it to Italy. This affirmation lifted his heart. Italy does not seem to be the promised land he had hoped. He determined to leave Italy although he does not have proper documents to go on. He tries to cross Switzerland but is detained and sent back to Italy. There he is soon hospitalized for 2 months with tuberculosis. Although this is challenging Henry is then granted humanitarian documents giving him accessible documents to travel to other countries he did not previously have. 17:00-27:00Henry learned Italian at that time in school. David asks Henry to share how many languages he is fluent in (3 different Gambian languages, plus French, Arabic, Italian, Dutch, English = 8!)Steve points out the incredible mind Henry has. During this time Henry plays semi-professional football (soccer) and goes to school. A childhood friend of his is living in Italy and they decide to leave Italy together. However his friend does not have the documents to travel. The friend suggests they should go to The Netherlands. They are stopped from entering France by the police and given to Italian authorities. The Italians encourage them to try again and give them a better strategy. They try that very day in the snow and succeed. They find a Red Cross center that provides them a place to stay for a few days before sending them to The Netherlands. Henry lives on the streets while his friend seeks asylum there. He finds food at a church they provides meals for the homeless. By God’s providence Henry meets a woman at the church who learns Henry was educated as a teacher and is good working with children. 27:00-38:00

Henry begins to help this angel-woman on Mondays, telling kids stories, doing music with them and time on the playground. This friend and soon to be benefactor asks Henry what would you like to do in The Netherlands? He says he would like to be a missionary, even though he is unsure what that may even entail.

Henry feels at this moment that he wants to know God in a committed Christian community. This woman finds out about Discipleship Training School (DTS) at Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Amsterdam. He was still living on the street at this time but this woman helps him find a hostel to live in instead. Determined to go to this school Henry finds out the fee to learn about God seems out of reach (2000 Euros). He knows he cannot pay this fee. This woman and her husband decide to sponsor Henry’s YWAM DTS. This was in January 2020. 38:00-46:00

In closing this penultimate episode, David Teel explains the basic mission and purpose of YWAM and its global presence. 46:00-50:00

We pick up part 3 resolving the part 2 cliffhanger - where Henry was living has burned down, his father has passed away back in The Gambia, and his friend has betrayed him by stealing all his money and abandoning him.

Henry explains he begins to live on the street with 3 friends who have arrived from his village in Gambia to Algeria.

Henry shares his discouragement and how he didn’t know what to do next. He connects with his uncle who is living in Italy who encourages Henry to use his education to be the navigator for the vessel he will take to Italy. Navigators do not have to pay their way so this encourages Henry. He and his friends reach Tripoli, Libya where they should be able to make the journey by boat to Italy.

0:00-13:00

Henry describes the boats (inflatable) called Viper boats which should perhaps seat 60 or 70 but squeeze in 150-160 so the boat owners make more money.

The refugees are told it will take 3-4 hours.

They set sail but run into pirates who kidnap them and take them back to Libya to imprison them there.

13:00-30:00

Henry and a few others plot their escape. Guards pursue, shooting as Henry flees. Evading their gunfire Henry finds a taxi on the highway. However the driver works with his captors and takes Henry back where he is beaten severely to make an example for all. Unable to move in such pain and injury the other prisoners must carry Henry to the bathroom.

Some of the Christian captives begin to pray and do daily Bible study.

Stripped of all freedom he is discouraged and resigned to reality that his life might end there. He began to hold on to God and fast and pray. In this prison there was no opportunity to gain their release by payment or ransom.

30:00-37:00

300 of the prisoners become fed up with their imprisonment and plot an escape.

Thinking of his previous failed escape he is uncertain he will try again.

Eventually he gains the courage to try again.

Henry discovers later that some of the escapees are caught and killed by the captors.

On the run he must find a hiding place.

Later he finds a taxi who gives him a ride. But he overcharges Henry and when they arrive at the destination the driver becomes enraged that Henry cannot pay and so he pistol-whips him and says he will sell him to a prison for his payment.

Miraculously a man from Senegal also on a refugee journey takes mercy on Henry and pays the rest of the fare.

37:00-54:00

A fellow refugee and roommate gets sick and dies in Henry’s presence. A few weeks later Henry decided to try to set sail again to Italy as a navigator. This second boat / raft journey and in the middle of the Mediterranean— the vessel takes on water. A leak in the raft begins to sink it. Nonetheless the refugees believe the boat will sink within the hour and that they will die. They

say their goodbyes to one another accepting their fate.

Pirates arrive as they are sinking. At this point the refugees are willing to go back to prison rather than drown here.

Fortunately a helicopter flies overhead and the pirates flee. By some reason the boat did not sink. They are able to restart the motor and try to maneuver to international waters where they may be rescued.

This concludes session 3.

Part 2 Henry Jarju: One Refugee’s Journey After a brief break David Teel thanks Henry Jarju for sharing this painful journey. Reflecting upon these memories is difficult but Henry states, “It is by God’s grace that I’m still alive and without Him, I wouldn’t be here.”The emotions and feelings are strong. 0:00-5:00Picking up from Part 1 cliffhanger where Henry is plotting his escape. The human trafficker’s brother is at the compound living but does not agree with his brother’s trafficking. In the middle of the night Henry decides he must escape but leaves everything behind but his Bible. Luckily after the gunfight - the security patrol had fallen asleep. Henry jumps the fence and goes to seek a hiding place for the night before he hopes to proceed to the transportation station / garage where he plans to catch a ride to his next destination. A man he runs into gives him directions to the garage but warns him that is the first place his captors will look. Henry is “very, very afraid.”He finds a taxi driver who will charge him more than the money he has so the driver kicks him out. Another man, a Christian sees Henry’s Bible and asks if he is a Christian. This man has compassion on Henry and tries to help. The taxi begins to fill up with other passengers until the driver decides to take Henry too. That drive was 15-16 hours drive to Algeria. Henry is truly alone as his friend had not needed to escape. He sleeps by himself on the street and the next day he meets other refugees from Gambia including one elderly man who develops a strong friendship with Henry. Henry’s brother sends him some money for food. He remains in Algeria for 4 months. He teams up with his new elderly friend for living and saving up together. This man also has skills to captain the boat / raft from Libya to Italy. They live in a center with dormitories where several thousand refugees stay. Unfortunately a fire breaks out one night at the center that many people are unable to escape and die. Henry and his friend escape though the friend breaks his ankle jumping over the barbed wire fence. Again he was homeless.,2 days later Henry receives word that his father has died. A week after this Henry’s elderly friend steals his money and leaves. He is now stranded without any money but what he has in his pockets. He felt cursed and that led to isolation and depression. “It was hard. I don’t know how to put it into words.” 5:00-40:00 Steve begins wrap-up of parts 1 & 2. 40:00-43:00Henry encourages those watching or listening who are going through down and dark times and prays for you. 43:00-46:00

Henry Jarju joins host Steve Teel on this edition of Very Bold Radio.

Be inspired every Saturday by difference-makers on Very Bold Radio and Podcast.

A Five-Part Special Very Bold Series “Henry Jarju: One Refugee’s Journey.” This is Henry Jarju’s journey as a refugee from The Gambia seeking better opportunities in Europe. Henry shares his harrowing yet inspiring story in this five-part interview (with David Teel and Steve Teel as interviewers). The emotions and memories are strong as Henry faced death many times, was robbed, beaten, kidnapped and imprisoned by human traffickers. He was severely beaten after a daring escape attempt from traffickers. Henry survived shipwreck, a deadly fire, betrayal, and the desperate defeat of death hanging over his head and the feeling of truly being all alone. The many obstacles Henry Jarju faced over and over again are a testimony of Henry’s amazing endurance and of God’s providence and grace. Here in Part 1 - From Amsterdam, Netherlands (YWAM Youth With A Mission) Close friend David Teel (guest co-host) introduces Henry Jarju to his dad and host Steve Teel (Very Bold Radio & Podcast VeryBold.com Ministries based in Texas) and gives background on Henry Jarju’s current ministry with refugees, the homeless, and soccer ministry. (0:00-6:00)Henry talks about his brand new engagement to be married. (6:00-12:00). Henry’s faith and love and knowledge of God’s Word shines through in this story. Henry introduces his story as being from The Gambia. The Gambia is significantly majority Muslim though Henry grew up Catholic. He will explain as we go on that he was not yet a born-again believer in Jesus (some of his brothers were so). He was living for vanity and money and things of the world at this time. Henry explains that most Gambian youth desire to move to Europe or USA. He sets up that his journey will mean traveling across the Sahara Desert before setting out by boat across the Mediterranean to Italy. (12:00-24:00)No one on his family approved or supported Henry’s decision to take this risky journey. His dad cautions him against this dangerous plan. Knowing that his family did not approve, Henry begins his journey without telling his family goodbye. He embarks on journey with his Bible, some money, and one friend but quickly runs out of money. Henry understood his family not being supportive but it was still very painful and he felt all alone in a country where he did not speak the language. But he continued on. Living in the streets in the country of Mauritania for 3 weeks and looking for any day labor job. Henry explains the next destination was the country Mali and then across Sahara Desert in a truck (approximately 25-30 people in the truck) to go through Algeria. The journey across the Sahara will take 4 days in the midst of hostile rebels and land disputes. The truck breaks down, is fixed, but soon runs out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. No shade except for laying under the truck. “For the first time in the desert, I felt like … this is it… we all lost hope.” The next day United Nations peacekeeping soldiers come upon them and help with food and water. Refreshed with water and hope the group heads out again. Just two hours later they encounter rebel soldiers. (24:00-42:00).Henry explains the rebels surrounding their truck, pointing their guns at them. One by one the rebels go through their bags taking whatever they want: phones, money. They are forced to take their clothes off. Henry had hid his money inside a body cream tube and it was not discovered. The rebels beat the sojourners with lashes and threaten them to reveal where their money is. The rebels then leave—but even take the last of the water the refugees had received. That was the third day.(42:00-53:00)They run into a different group of rebels who force the refugees to their camp. This group of rebels then sell the refugees to human traffickers. The human trafficker is Senegalese and this gives Henry comfort for a brief time as he speaks the same language. Then as the man becomes angry Henry realizes the dire situation that they are in the hands of human traffickers. He is forced to call his dad and ask for ransom money to release him. His dad reminds him he had told him not to go and will not send money. Henry then calls one of his sisters who pledges to send money though he knows she does not have any money to send. But his captor incorrectly believe she will. Some of the other captives Henry learns have been there for 7 or 9 months but had not been able to pay off the full ransom amount. He then learns that these other captives are permitted to go work outside the compound to pay down the ransom.Henry calls a brother and explains the troubling situation. Henry speaks in a language his captive doesn’t know and tells his brother he will try to escape but to tell the man that he will send the money. Henry is warned by other captives not to attempt an escape because he will be caught and taken back to the rebels. Henry’s friend’s family is able and willing to pay the fee for his friend. But Henry must attempt to escape. That night the rebels and Algerians engage in a gunfight and Henry is determined to try his escape despite warnings not to. (53:00-1:08:00) This ends Part 1.

Very Bold Radio 9-17-22 Rivercity Church Crossover (Part 2)

Sat, 17 Sep 2022 05:00:00 +0000

Steve Teel continues to be interviewed by Ricky Maldonado of River City Church in a crossover podcast. They talk about scrapping (rapping scripture), touch more on being God’s masterpiece, and discuss how Steve came to work at River City Church and then to return to Very Bold Ministries full time. Steve shares about the growth of Peanut Butter Bowl, and then Ricky asks him lots of interesting questions that will help you get to know Steve better.Time Stamps:0:00Introduction0:25 Steve introduces himself and the second part of the crossover podcast with Ricky Maldonado from River City Church in New Braunfels. He enters the point in the interview where he is talking about scraps: scripture raps, and how they are born of the idea that we have to fight off the lies of Satan with God’s truth, and how music is helpful in memorizing those powerful scriptures. 1:48 Ricky talks about a declaration used weekly at River City Church: “We are badly broken. We are deeply loved.” Steve says putting those phrases together equals: We are God’s Masterpiece. He talks about Ephesians 2:10, and God declaring us as good. 5:20Steve shares about one of his favorite stories – when Jesus first meets Peter. He calls Peter a rock. He sees Peter for who God will make him.6:22Ricky asks Steve what brought him to River City Church. Steve talks about his obedience to God, and how that has helped shape his life and his ministry, even through struggles. He shares the incredible story of how he came to be the youth pastor at River City for three years.12:40Steve talks about how God urged him to “win” this job among the other candidates, and how he and Jason Powers worked out the arrangement they had for Steve to work there and to continue his work with Very Bold Ministries. He also talks about how he came to go back full-time with Very Bold.16:32Steve explains that everything done through Very Bold is funded by ministry donors, including family, friends, and ministry partners, and how faithful God has been in that.17:23Ricky and Steve talk about this year’s Peanut Butter Bowl. They talk about the exponential growth, and how schools are actually reaching out to him now wanting to participate, and how coaches are inviting other schools. They are up to 37 Peanut Butter Bowls, meaning 74 high school communities. Steve talks about how the food is distributed to hungry kids. Ricky discusses the merits of Peanut Butter Bowl.21:37Ricky asks Steve if someone found a book 150 years from now about Steve Teel, what the title and the inside blurb would be. He answers “Against all Hope” and explains why.23:07Ricky asks Steve who he would invite to a dinner party if he could invite any three people, dead or alive, and you can’t say Jesus. He answers: Moses’ mom, Moses’ sister, and Joseph, and explains why.26:58Ricky asks what Steve does when he’s stuck in traffic, about what it would be like if he were living off the radar, what animals he would save if he were building the ark, and a few other interesting questions. It’s a great opportunity to get to know Steve better! Their friendly banter is refreshing.33:18Ricky starts to wrap up, and asks Steve where people can find out more about him and his ministry: verybold.com and peanutbutterbowl.com and steve@verybold.com. Steve thanks Ricky and closes out the show. He reminds the audience that God is with them and for them and that His presence is powerful and encourages them to hold onto that and be very bold!Standout Moments/Quotes:4:20“God, out of gratitude, I’m going to pick up my cross as you’ve called me to do; I’m going to die to my fleshly desires. I’m going to pick it up every day.” Steve Teel12:39“God just put it on my heart: You need to go win this job. Don’t just show up. And I felt convicted.” Steve Teel16:20“I don’t want to outrun God on this. And the Holy Spirit kept saying, ‘You cannot outrun me on this.’”

Very Bold Radio 9-10-22 Rivercity Church Crossover (Part 1)

Sat, 10 Sep 2022 05:00:00 +0000

Steve Teel is interviewed by Ricky Maldonado of River City Church in a crossover podcast. They talk about Peanut Butter Bowl, working together on staff while Steve was the youth pastor, the powerful sermon on Being God’s Masterpiece that Steve recently preached at the church, highlighting the story of Moses, which they go into in some depth. Steve reminds the audience that God knows what they are going through, and He is working things for their good, in His timing.Time Stamps:0:00Introduction0:25Steve talks about his typical kind of interview, and how this show is different. He says he is going to be the interviewee this time, being interviewed in two parts by Ricky Maldonado of River City Church New Braunfels.1:20 Ricky comes on the mic and introduces his podcast, River City Church Talks, and introduces Steve, who encourages Ricky. The podcast vision is to get a look behind the scenes at the church. Ricky talks about Peanut Butter Bowl and Steve thanks him for his help with Very Bold Ministries, and acclaims Ricky’s skills that also helped him when he was the youth pastor. They discuss the joys and challenges of working together.5:30 Steve talks about Super Powers, the behind-the-scenes show Steve was wanting to get produced, and how Lead Pastor Jason Powers has comedic rants that would be well-documented by the kind of people who created Duck Dynasty.6:20Ricky brings up Steve’s recent sermon Being God’s Masterpiece using his favorite verse in Ephesians (2:10). Ricky used to be in a youth group called Masterpiece. The root of it was that same verse. 7:49Ricky shares about Steve going into the story of Moses, which Ricky begins to brief the audience on in discussion with Steve. 9:44Steve talks about how Moses was a defender of justice, and about how his biggest mistake, killing the slavemaster, didn’t disqualify him for the important work God had for him. Steve highlights the comedic elements of how Moses recorded the story.11:20Ricky discusses how the people of Israel were crying out, looking for God, and how it would be easy to be cynical. But, God was listening, and He answered them in His own timing. Steve talks about how God uses all of our pain and misery for a purpose, and says we have to always look and see where God is at work.12:36Ricky brings up in Exodus 3:7 how God heard the groaning of his people. God remembered the covenant. Steve points out: God knew. God is too loving to stay on the surface, and is invested in a real relationship with us. They discuss how we often take God for granted, and how God chooses the best timing for things to happen, allowing us to grow.16:08Steve says his heart goes out to audience members who are hurting. He wants them to know that God sees them and hears them and remembers them, and God knows the pain they are going through, and for them to have faith that God is going to use that for their good and the good of others.16:40Ricky shares that later in the story Moses has run away and has married a shepherdess, and how Satan thinks Moses’ story is over. He reminds Steve of talking about how Satan sometimes uses something we are good at and twists it to cause us to stumble, and they discuss how that played out for Moses. But, God is always ahead of Satan and thinking bigger.18:36Ricky says his favorite part of the story is when Moses comes across the burning bush, and how God reminds Moses of who He is. Steve points back to the comedic elements of this part of the story, and how Moses argues with God.20:45Steve shares that he loves that you can see in the story that God wants to reveal who he is, to him and to the rest of the world. Ricky mentions that you just never know when God is going to show up, and that we have to be ready.22:50 Steve shares that he has dealt with in the last year not feeling comfortable with what God called him to do with scrapping. Like Moses, he heard the holy spirit say, “Who gave man his tongue?” He feels like a lot of his ministry life he has been comfortable with, but this year has been a new chapter. God has had to remind Steve that He will equip him. He and Ricky discuss scrapping: rapping scriptures, and how that has come about.25:10Steve closes out part 1 of his interview with Ricky and previews that part 2 will air next Saturday, and wraps the episode.Standout Moments/Quotes:9:45“Moses was a defender of justice.” Steve Teel10:17“It’s just so fortunate that God is so much bigger than our mistakes.” Steve Teel11:08“God never brings up, let’s talk about that mistake that you made. Let’s not do that again. God has forgiven and moved on.” Steve Teel11:55“We don’t want the pain.Nobody wants the suffering, and on this side of heaven, God uses all of it. He uses it for a purpose.” Steve Teel13:07 “God knew, and I just think that’s so important. People go through so much garbage, so much pain. God knows! He sees, He hears, He remembers.” Steve Teel16:08“My heart goes out to people who might be listening and are really in a painful spot. If you can have a teeny bit of faith that God is going to use that for not only your good but for other people’s good.” Steve Teel21:39“You never know when God is going to show up, and when he shows up you have to be ready.” Ricky Maldonado

Very Bold Radio 11-27-21 with Danny Ray (Part 1)

Sat, 27 Nov 2021 06:00:00 +0000

Steve Teel interviewing world-famous illusionist Danny Ray on Very Bold Radio & Podcast. Danny is on the TV show, Penn & Teller Fool Us on December 3, 2021. His new book to help marriages: “No, I Can’t Make Your Wife Disappear: A Magician’s Guide to a Magical Marriage” is an excellent resource for couples. It’s light-hearted and I love the hook of magic (since I really do enjoy great illusionists!) but FULL of practical INSIGHTS.

Time stamps approximate:

0:00 to 2:00 Introduction Steve Teel and Danny Ray.

2:00 to 14:00 Danny previews his upcoming appearance on Penn & Teller Fool Us taking us behind the scenes into the process, preparation, and yes, prayer.

14:00 to 19:00 Mind-reading for marriage.

18:00 to 28:00 Negative self-talk. “Jesus never said anything negative about himself.” Danny talks about learning of his biological father in prison and dealing with anger.

28:00 to 34:00 Danny talks about the beginning of his marriage and realizing that marriage did not cure his pornography temptations. Through therapy, Danny decided whatever it takes to make the marriage great—he would be willing to do.

34:30 to 44:00 Danny walks us through what happened with his biological father over the course of many years. He shares what forgiveness looked like for him: lots of tears, pain, and hurts but also joy.

44:00 to 46:30 He talks the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation.

46:30 to 48:00 Marriage Tip: “Forgiveness requires humility.” Followed by: what can I do to make things better.

48:00 to 50:30 Danny prays for listeners going through marriage struggles.

50:30 to 54:00 Steve closes the episode.

BONUS UPCOMING: Steve and Danny Ray are scheduled to record an episode immediately after Danny’s Penn & Teller episode.

Very Bold Radio 10-23-21 with Darren Mulligan

Sat, 23 Oct 2021 05:00:00 +0000

One of the most authentic, real, vulnerable and open interviews I can recall: Darren Mulligan of the amazing band We Are Messengers (Magnify, Come What May, Maybe It’s Ok, Everything Comes Alive, Power, Love) opens up about reevaluating everything the last two years. About feeling “born again, again” and a whole lot more!

Powerful and encouraging:

0:00-3:00 Introduction and: are Steve and Darren friends? Answered (haha)!

3:00-4:20 Reevaluating

4:20-5:00 Discipline

5:00-6:00 Darren’s wife asks: “Is this the last record you’ll ever make?”

6:00-6:40 Brand New Album “Wholehearted” already global impact

6:40-7:30 Developing discipline: “I was relying on a secondhand faith…” but… “when I’m eating the Scriptures…—“

7:30-8:20 “…for the first time in my walk as a Christian I’m not struggling to say ‘no’ to sin; I’m not struggling to say ‘yes’ to God…”

8:30-10:40 Discussion with his wife about this (Wholehearted just released) possibly being his last album. Darren talks his deep love of his Ireland but the clear call to America. “13 years ago we said, ‘God we’ll go wherever you want us to go and do whatever you want us to do. And so the Lord has cashed in on that check that we wrote with our mouths and our hearts.”

“I’m an Irishman. I’m from the dirt. I’m from the ground. I’m a blue-collar working class guy. To be a musician is still an alien thing to me.”

10:40-12:00 on holding things too tightly… “I’ve got nothing to pretend anymore. I’m too old…”

12:00-13:00 Not wanting to be cool or trendy with new album. Because “…that’s where the magic is, in being fully yourself inside the fullness of God.”

13:00-15:00 on men being both tender, kind, and also furious and strong.

The western Church’s problem “form of godliness but lacking power of God” — Darren admits, “Too much of my life I had a form of godliness, the appearance of godliness but really my life was an empty tomb.”

“We should be dangerous to the kingdom of Hell.”

15:00-17:00 on men having charisma but not doing a “darn thing to change the world.”

“I am determined. Determined to have character that is greater than my calling. It’s been the wrong way around for too long.”

17:00-18:30 On the devil seeking to kill him, destroy him- but the kindness and power of God that has constrained him (the devil).

So “I get another chance (today) to say ‘yes’ to the only one who has ever really understood me and that’s the King.”

Host Steve Teel’s final thoughts - there is MUCH to this interview (not mentioned above) and Darren’s heart and emotions shared in the 20+ minutes! Also I love the new album “Wholehearted”—it is excellent! Darren is very proud of it as well he should be. Thank you, Darren.

Sat, 04 Sep 2021 05:00:00 +0000

It’s Peanut Butter Bowl time so we are congratulating and talking with Coach Ron Rittimann for Alamo Heights’ incredible 5 1/2 day charge to collect 3,900 jars of peanut butter (current count). We also thank Coach for his leadership with Peanut Butter Bowl overall in inviting and inspiring other coaches to participate to feed hungry children through high school football.
Then we talk to our Peanut Butter Bowl MVP donor, Mike Spears. Mike explains his involvement, interest, and generosity and how this year he is spreading the love (and the peanut butter!) to all 20 schools involved in what PB Bowl is calling the Mike Spears Touchdown Challenge. Though Mike is donating $100/50 jars for every Peanut Butter Bowl TD (check the scores of the first 4 games — that’s A LOT of PB already!)— we are inviting people or businesses to do their own team’s Touchdown Challenge and donate 50 jars per TD. Canyon Cougars have two individuals taking the challenge and one taking the brand new defense Turnover Challenge (50 jars per turnover created).
If you’d like to take on a challenge reach out through PeanutButterBowl.com contact form.

Since it’s inaugural game in 2016 (Johnson vs Brandeis), Peanut Butter Bowl has grown to a series of ten games this year in San Antonio, Austin, New Braunfels, Alamo Heights, Converse, and Seguin. We have collected 50,000 jars worth of peanut butter to give to food organizations that feed hungry children and hungry people in their community. Go to PeanutButterBowl.com or Verybold.com for more

Simple Man Bible Study Ep. 11: Rock The World

Sat, 14 Aug 2021 05:00:00 +0000

Simple Man Bible Study Ep. 11 Rock The World. Today on this teaching we’ve got lots of questions. Why in the world did Peter even think to ask to walk on water? Why did Jesus respond the way he did? How did John and Mark talk about Jesus walking on water, but not bother to mention Peter? How did Luke not even talk about Jesus walking on water? And questions for you: What boat are you in right now? Are you stressed? Afraid? Exhausted? Freaked out? And finally—is Jesus looking for some shoulder-shrugging faith from you today or is Jesus asking you to step out of your boat and onto the waves? Either way—Jesus is looking to bring his powerful answer to your life on this episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast with Steve Teel.

Ep. 14: Football Coach Mike Dutson Defeats Leukemia with help of wife Dana, their kids, community, and God

Sat, 20 Jul 2019 17:30:00 +0000

I’ve been blessed and honored to be one of many people in Mike and Dana’s corner this past year as they’ve taken on leukemia and won. I consider Mike a miracle, not just for crushing cancer but also for the work I’ve seen God do in his life. Mike and Dana walk us through their journey, talking about the power of community, power of positive attitude, and Mike’s newly discovered power of prayer in this big win. Mike is a football and track coach at Johnson High School in San Antonio and his wife Dana is a coach at Tejeda Middle School.

Ep. 13: JP Lane Purple Heart Recipient, Speaker, Author, the only double amputee Recording Artist in the World, and a Miracle

Sat, 13 Jul 2019 17:30:00 +0000

I’m blessed to meet some amazing people! And thanks to our good friend Kelly J. Stewart I met JP Lane and his wife Crystal. They are the real deal. JP is a daring patriot and US Army veteran who miraculously survived a 200-pound IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2011. JP describes in this interview how he had been on a dark path before God used that to get him back on track. He talks attitude and recovery and his new normal. He tells us about God speaking to him when he was desperate for guidance and how that quickly, amazingly led to JP singing at the Presidential Inauguration. He tells us about his upcoming book Walking Again (release date: Sept. 11, 2019), sings his new song for us, and even prays for those who might be discouraged. He is a true patriot and a miracle of God!

Ep. 12: Jordan Binnington of the Stanley Cup winning St. Louis Blues NHL

Mon, 08 Jul 2019 05:00:00 +0000

I think the world of Jordan Binnington, aka Binner, aka JB, aka Binni, aka Winnington. I had the honor to get to know Jordan in San Antonio (AHL's Rampage) before St. Louis called him up and he helped changed the course of the Blues and end their 52-year Stanley Cup drought defeating the Boston Bruins in seven games. The Blues going from worst in the NHL on January 3rd (31st out of 31 teams!) to winning the Stanley Cup is one of the greatest sports stories of my lifetime. Consider this: No NBA, NFL, or MLB (or NHL of course until now) team has been in dead last place 25% of the season completed and gone on to win the championship. The Blues were dead last with 45% of the season completed. Jordan Binnington earned his first start January 7 posting a shutout against the Flyers and went on to have a regular season record of 24-5-1 before becoming the first rookie goaltender to win 16 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I could say a lot more about this intelligent, thoughtful, funny, kind, guy who loves to bring people together but why don’t you hear from the man himself: a story of belief, perseverance, and competitive fire. An amazing story!

Ep. 11: Movie-- Run The Race Screenwriter Jake McEntire

Mon, 01 Jul 2019 05:00:00 +0000

Have you seen the film Run The Race (executive producers Tim Tebow and his brother Robby, now available Blu Ray, DVD, Digital)? Great sports action and soundtrack in addition to really solid acting and of course the story and screenplay itself which brings us to our guest, screenwriter Jake McEntire. The title Run The Race is spot on for the film itself but doubles for the story of the film getting made. Hear Jake’s story and you’ll see the movie was definitely a marathon and not a sprint. You'll be encouraged for the race you are running right now.

Ep. 10: Rocco Grimaldi of the Nashville Predators NHL

Sat, 22 Jun 2019 18:00:00 +0000

I love Rocco and his #borntoshine wife Abby (an amazing singer/songwriter talent who will be on the show soon). We are blessed to consider them family and I count Rocco a best friend. But forget that for a minute because what we talk about here is Rocco Grimaldi’s breakthrough year with the Nashville Preds of the NHL, and his breakout playoff series where he led the Preds’ forwards in scoring with 3 goals. We talk about some of the tough times he faced to get to this point and we talk about how God led Rocco to the Nashville Predators. You’re going to enjoy all of it but be blessed as you hear Rocco talk about God’s specific powerful promises to him when there was a whole lot of uncertainty. Listen to what God put on Rocco’s heart and you’ll be inspired in your faith and reminded that Jesus is leading you as well!

Ep. 9: Your Enneagram Coach Beth McCord & Jeff McCord

Sat, 15 Jun 2019 17:30:00 +0000

The Enneagram is all the rage for understanding personality types, communication, fears, desires, motivations and more. Your Enneagram Coach Beth McCord and Jeff do a fantastic job of using the Enneagram as a tool for all that understanding but all in the light of Jesus Christ and pointing to the Gospel the entire way. In this interview we talk marriage relationships including theirs and how the Enneagram helped them in a profound and important way and I (bold move) even let them take a whack at Kris’s and mine (okay, okay, so now Kris and I think maybe we are not the Enneagram types we first thought lol… which is great for learning and growing!). Beth and Jeff’s new book: Becoming Us is available for pre-order and at their Becoming Us live date nights. What a tremendous couple! A lot of fun talking with them and I so look forward to their book. Get that marriage of yours to thriving! Never taken a free Enneagram assessment? Go to YourEnneagramCoach.com. I really enjoyed Jeff and Beth and you will too!

Ep. 8: Unspoken's Chad Mattson

Sat, 01 Jun 2019 17:30:00 +0000

Let's real talk: Anxiety, Enneagram, Calling, and of course Unspoken's awesome new album: Reason. I'm a huge fan of Chad Mattson & Unspoken. Yes-the music: The Cure, Just Give Me Jesus, Higher, Start A Fire and of course: Good Fight which has personal meaning for me and helped demonstrate just how caring, compassionate, real Chad Mattson is (I talk about that to intro this episode). Big heart of gratitude for Chad and Katie and their REAL love for people. Thank you!

Ep. 7: Mandisa

Sat, 25 May 2019 17:30:00 +0000

Mandisa. I reached out to Mandisa for an interview because when I first talked with her nearly two years ago, we just clicked and connected. I knew talking with her would bless me (selfish) but also bless our listeners (hey, that’s you). What I did not know until we talked off air this time is that she’s in a hard place right now. Off-air she made the decision to go ahead and open up during this conversation about depression and the ongoing battle it is. Just so you know, recognizing we were going to get real and Mandisa was going to get very vulnerable, I wanted to first start on a lighter note. So yes, we talk about her meeting former Tennessee Titans’ DeMarco Murray, and my challenge to her to get to a Nashville Predators hockey game this next NHL hockey season before we get deep (About 15 minutes in is when we get to the real talk). Mandisa amazes me. She is an incredible gift and blessing from God. Her prayer for you near the end of the podcast and her challenge for us to watch for signs of depression in our friends, neighbors, family will bless you.

Ep. 6: Candice Curry: The Con Man's Daughter

Sat, 18 May 2019 17:30:00 +0000

Candice Curry is a blast. She’s hilarious, quick-witted, sharp, and the definition of fun. Example: listen as she describes her favorite children. So funny. And yet… her amazing life story in the book you must read: The Con Man’s Daughter brought me to tears many times. The things Candice endured… and then for her to eventually discover grace, love, redemption through Jesus. It’s powerful. So whenever she and I sit down for a talk, it’s always fun (see my first description) and yet always powerfully redemptive. Love this girl! Oh, and bonus, we meet her hilarious daughter Stiles Parish (sadly if you listen, you’ll see: No, she’s not her mom’s favorite lol) near the end or our conversation.

Ep. 5: Lisa Burkhardt-Worley: Author The Only Father I Ever Knew

Sat, 11 May 2019 17:30:00 +0000

I did not know Lisa Burkhardt-Worley before she met me at the KSLR AM630 12th floor studios. I knew of Lisa because when we first moved to San Antonio she was the only female sports anchor in town. She was on KENS 5 (CBS affiliate) and always did a great job. I hadn’t known her vast national sports experience which we talk some about but I also did not know her fascinating powerful story of God getting a hold of her a couple of key times in her life. This interview and her story reminds me of the power of one person, to say one simple thing that can change the course of our life here on earth as well as our eternal destiny. Lisa also has authored several books including The Only Father I Ever Knew. Awesome to meet her.

Ep. 4: Bethany Beal of GirlDefined: Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl's Heart

Fri, 03 May 2019 15:26:23 +0000

So Bethany Beal and Kristen Clark of GirlDefined are incredible sisters in Christ. Um, and literally sisters of each other. They are impacting girls, young women, and some moms too globally! I first met this dynamic duo while interviewing them for Beacon Radio. When Bethany reached out to me about their new book: Sex, Purity, and the Longings of A Girl’s Heart, I jumped at the chance to interview her again as we get Very Bold Radio & Podcast going! Not only do we talk sex (and somehow I didn’t blush once…) and their new book, we also talk some about how they handle insults and mocking. They are amazing young women and though we missed Kristen this time, we’ll look forward to our next interview. See GirlDefined.com for more.

Ep. 3: The Simple Man Bible Study Part 1: Nicknames. Rock The World

Sat, 27 Apr 2019 17:30:00 +0000

Yes, I love interviews. But I love the Bible too because in some ways reading and discovering God’s word is like sitting down to interview Jesus. If you watch, listen, ask questions, you’ll discover what I mean. Anyway, today we kick off The Simple Man’s Bible Study Rock The World Part 1. Which is a simple/clever (ish) way of saying we are going to experience Jesus through the eyes and experiences of Peter (see, his nickname Peter = Rock, and so Rock the World? No? Yes? Maybe?). Today we talk about nicknames. You’ll see. Or hear. Some of my favorite nicknames are hockey nicknames: Grimmer. Binner. Legde or as I call him Luh-Legend. What’s your nickname? Email me: Steve@VeryBold.com

Ep.2: The Simple Man Bible Study with Steve Teel: BONUS Easter Edition

Mon, 22 Apr 2019 18:55:12 +0000

Very Bold Radio & Podcast features a lot of amazing interviews with difference makers from sports, music, authors, entertainment… but ALSO some amazing… well wait… let’s dial that down… solid… okay solid-ish Bible Teaching lol. I am a Simple Man. Burgers. Fries. College Football. Okay and donuts. Okay and God’s word. Hah. But though I am a Simple Man the teaching is for men, women, and youth too. After all some of my biggest fans are in fact women (Hi Kris. Hi Mom. Hi Sis.) and youth (Um. Hi? Hello? River City Youth Tribe? Bueller? Bueller?) But this is a Bonus Simple Man Bible Study for Easter and we imagine visiting the Apostle John on what I call Sad Saturday (the day between the Cross of Jesus on Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday) and imagine what that might feel like. I invite you to come with me…

Ep. 1: Pat Barrett (Good Good Father, Build My Life, The Way)

Sat, 13 Apr 2019 17:30:00 +0000

A great way to launch Very Bold Radio & Podcast is by interviewing Pat Barrett, singer-songwriter of hits including: Good Good Father, Build My Life, The Way. I’m predicting he’s going to have Tomlin-esque impact for this generation with praise and worship songs. Pat cracked me up too. I flubbed my first line of my first Very Bold show and he laughingly insisted I keep it for y’all—and I agreed lol! Of course we talk music and touring but we also get to some solid marriage stuff and have a great time. I love interviewing people like Pat Barrett and you’re going to love him too.
