365 - Sandy Brady - A Transformation Like No Other

From a pioneer in Outdoor television to the depths of alcohol and cocaine addiction, to being deep in debt, Sandy Brady has lived it all.

Growing up in Reidsville, NC, it was a chance meeting at a gas station in Chamberlain, South Dakota that began his journey. While pumping gas, Sandy bumped into Tom Miranda, this was the late 1980's and a friendship struck up that let to Sandy becoming a camera man for Tom while everything was just beginning.

A few years of success led to Tom having to fire Sandy becasue of the addiction that was taking hold of Sandy....as he tells the story, you will be drawn into his pain, and authenticity. Sandy's journey was a long and painful one that ultimately led to him being disowned by his father, his wife leaving him, and more than seven figuers in debt. It was at that moment, he caught a glimer of hope....the hope that is only found in Jesus Christ.

This may be one of the best shows Christian Outdoors has been a part of, it certainly is one of the most captivating stories.

In the third installment of our dive into game call makers, today we are joined by the co-owner of Black Label Game Calls. Russell Andrews is also a National Champion caller in many levels including the 2025 NWTF Gobbling Champion and the 2025 World Gobbling Champion. He also shares his testimony of how God has helped him through a trying time in his life.

Russell Andrews, Co-Owner and Operator of Black Label Game Calls, has been a consistent disrupter in the wild game call industry since July of 2022 when he and his partner, Jesse Martin, took their passion and transformed it into a product. When Russell's father was senselessly killed in May 2024 (article featured in "The Call" NWTF magazine), Russell's entire approach to cultivating his business shifted from being sales-focused to using turkey calling to spread the Gospel. Russell turned to his turkey calling family through all of the grief and anger, and poured his efforts into preparing for turkey calling contests, winning the Gobbling division of both the 2025 NWTF Grand National Calling Contest and the 2025 World Turkey Calling Contest. Russell's mission is very simple now — carry out the Great Commission using the platform that Black Label Game Calls has built.

House in the Woods is a nonprofit organization offering outdoor programs to bring together small groups of active military, veterans, and their family members to relax, share, bond, and deal with the stress, loss, grief, and other emotions which can haunt the grieving soul.

We offer canoeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, fishing, nature tours, campfires, swimming, wildlife identification and spotting, and other natural Eastern Maine resource "treasures" God has given our beautiful state to enjoy. As participants face the outdoor challenges presented by Mother Nature herself, they will have the opportunity to share laughter, memories, sorrow, service, and pride, among many other common.

Paul and Dee House founded House in the Woods after their son, Sgt. Joel A. House, was killed by a roadside bomb while serving in the Army in Iraq. Their vision for House in the Woods began shortly after attending the military memorial service at Fort Hood, TX for Joel and 19 other soldiers from his army base who died the same month as their son. It was both emotionally overwhelming and comforting to be around so many families who were experiencing the same grief and loss. They dreamed of creating a program using Maine's outdoor resources that would help military families support one another.

Paul is a life-long Maine woodsman and Maine Master Guide. Dee is a former Navy "brat" who grew up in military housing and schools during the Vietnam War era.

It is a sad reality in today's world that churches must begin to take action to protect their members and staff from violence. As I write this, the news came out of another shooting at a church in Lexington, Kentucky.

Kris Maloney saw this need a few years ago, and using his military and Law Enforcement training began teaching churches how to protect their members and staff. This local assistance has transformed into a full ministry and business.

Sheepdog Church Security was founded to provide excellent training to churches across the country. From identifying your team(s) to range time and becoming proficient with your weapon Through both online and inperson training, Kris instructs church volunteers how to recognize a possible threat, how to patrol the parking lots, doors, grounds and more. His business trains churches how to identify and stop a possible attack.

This episode is intresting and insightful as Kris tells us the imnportant aspects of being prepared adn being safe while we worship.

343 - Disabled Veteran and SOCOM Coach - Richard Deverecks

Rick Devericks is a medically retired 20-year Special Operations Green Beret Army Veteran from

Brunswick, Ohio. Rick's military service to our nation has taken him through 10 combat

deployments in six different countries. Rick now lives in North Carolina near Fort Bragg with his family. He is passionate about his family and God, but also about veterans, archery, hunting, and the outdoors.

Rick started shooting archery at the age of 15 and soon thereafter found himself enthusiastic about the sport. He quickly began competing at a national level. He placed first in the National Field Archery Association's tournament, and he placed in the finals in both the International

Bowhunting Organization's Indoor World and the Archery Shooters Association's national

tournaments. Rick also competed at a state and local level and won several championships.

Archery eventually had to take a back seat to the military, but as Rick reached retirement, he

eagerly jumped back into the sport, once again, competing and placing in several local

competitions. Rick later completed in the 2017 Department of Defense's Warrior Games in

2017, taking home two silver medals. He later took a Gold Medal in Archery at the 2021 Invictus Games.

Hoping to support other veterans, wounded warriors, and share his love for archery, Rick

started coaching the Warrior Games SOCOM archery team in 2019. Today Rick continues to shoot archery and compete as often as possible, but his primary focus is on coaching and helping others enjoy and appreciate archery.

337 - Chad Stillman - Outdoorsman, Law Enforcement Officer, and Survivor

Born and raised in southeastern Wisconsin, Chad Stillman was introduced to sports and the outdoors at a young age. Growing up, if you couldn't find him on the soccer or football field, chances are he was in the woods or on the water. Those two passions would lead to a stint as a semi-pro kicker for the Racine Raiders and a cameraman for Bowhunting.com. By 22 years old, he was fresh out a college, a homeowner and embarking on his lifelong dream of working in law enforcement. Quickly moving up in the ranks, he received a promotion to the SWAT Team and ultimately settled in as an FBI Task Force Investigator. To warn our audience, this isn't an easy conversation to listen to as Chad takes us on the emotional journey of his story. Struggling at times to share it here, he details the events of January 17, 2018, a day that changed his life and the lives of others forever. 7 years later and battling with PTSD from the events of that evening, he gives credit to time in the outdoors, the support of friends and family, but most notably his faith, for sustaining him when the pressures of life are too much.

While hunting in Wyoming in 2018, Lee Brooke faced all hunters worst nightmare. He came face to face with a Grizzly bear while returning to claim his elk he'd shot the evening before. Unfortunately for Lee, during the night a sow grizzly bear had claimed his elk. Before he could react, the bear was on top of him, clawing, biting, and tossing him about.

"I remember looking down and seeing my mustache and my nose laying on the ground" Lee tells us in his harrowing recount of the nightmare. After spending 7 hours on the mountain, rescue finally arrived. The details, and recovery are all part of this show. You will not want to miss one second as Lee recounts thay fateful day.

His wife Martha also joins us as she shares her story of getting the news, the months in the hospital, dozens of surgeries and more.

Through all of this Lee adn Martha clung to their faith to help them through nthis ordeal.

Duck Commander is in its 50th year as a company, and yet for most of that time, it was a cottage industry. Building duck calls in the family home. All of that changed in the early 2000's when the brand of duck calls started getting the recognition it deserved. Designed by Phil Robertson in the early 1970's the now famous duck calls have led to the demise of tens of thousands of ducks.

But there is far more to the story than mere duck calls. Phil Robertson's conversion has been well documented, and today's show is not about Phil, but about his son Willie. In my world as an outdoor writer I have the ability to preview a lot of new products, and to see some of the new innovations that are on the horizon. I am constantly amazed at how people create ways to make a hole. The Archery Trade Association annual show is one place where you will witness dozens of new broadhead designs every year.

It seems that there is always someone who thinks they can create a better broadhead. One that flies better, cutted better, and tunes easier. I've seen broadheads that were diminituve in size barely bigger than the arrow itself, and some that looked like a hubcap flying through the air. And every one of these folks believed theirs was the best ever designed.

In 1986, seventeen year old Chad Waligura was having a normal day with his friends. Swimming, laughing and more until he dove into the pool and struck the bottom, breaking his neck at the C7.

Before anyone noticed he was at the bottom, Chad drowned...adults at the event went into action pulled him from the water and resuscitated him, bringing him back to life.

3 weeks later he was in the woods chasing deer. Today, Chad has a respectable resume as an outdoor writer, television show host and more. In this episode we dicsuss his injury, and how he has not allowed it to stop him from chasing his dreams of hunting and fishing.

222. Grand Funk Railroad to Heaven

Legendary all-American frontman and guitarist, Mark Farner, was the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad repeatedly to the top of the charts, and today he's a platinum recording artist 30 times over. At age 75, Farner commands the stage with the same intensity and outpouring of love as he did during the summer of '69 and his fans are still flocking to see "the Captain." The rock patriot's synergy and open heart still come through in epic hits that defined a generation including— "I'm Your Captain" (Closer to Home)" "We're An American Band" "Heartbreaker" "Bad Time To Be In Love" and recut covers of "The Loco-Motion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful." His deep passion for Jesus and sharing his faith with others was moving and his stories of how God intervened on a hunt with a lost hunter is remarkable and inspiring.

Rugged Cross Outdoors is a non-profit ministry that shares the great outdoors with the youth of this country. In sharing the outdoors with the youth it also gives them a platform to share the love of Jesus with these youth.
