Suzy McNamara is an author and speaker who gives a voice to various forms of grief and loss that so often go unnamed and are unaddressed. Suzy wrote the book, The Silkworm, the Magician, and the Sister Tree, a deeply personal and human exploration of caregiving, grief, enduring love, and health & wellness. In 2024, Suzy lost her husband of 37 years, Bob McNamara, to Posterior Cortical Atrophy, an aggressive form of early-onset Alzheimer’s, after caring for him at home for five years. Months earlier, her sister and lifelong best friend, Elizabeth Muslin, died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. These overlapping losses shape her perspective and inform her writing.

Suzy’s work offers particular insight into early-onset Alzheimer’s, where illness dismantles identity during years when marriages, careers, friendships, and family life are often at their most active. She writes honestly about the daily realities of caregiving, including isolation, exhaustion, and the quiet labor of preserving dignity, countering shame, emotional wellness, and holding onto meaning amid uncertainty. Suzy believes grief is a lonely sport and survival depends on community, shared language, and the courage to name what is often left unsaid. Grounded in sustaining faith practices, she writes to walk alongside readers as they navigate their own losses.

Suzy continues to find meaning through her lifelong love of books, movies, and music, interests she once shared with her husband and sister and now shares with her children and the wider community she has built.

What Caregiving Taught Me About Dementia, Why the System is Broken, & How blueBell Intends To Improve It

Lori La Bey talks with Andrew Karesa, who is a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and a proud husband and father of two young sons.

After witnessing how his family coped to support his grandmother with her Alzheimer's diagnosis, Andrew realized he needed to take action. This inspired the creation of blueBell Village, aimed at restoring the Personhood and Independence of those living with dementia™. With blueBell, Andrew has seen lives transformed for both individuals living with dementia and their caregivers, and he is passionate about fostering a world where care is tailored to each individual’s needs.

Additionally, he is pursuing his doctorate at the University of Calgary, where his research explores Indigenous entrepreneurship in the health sector, with a particular focus on the role of data in new venture creation. Andrew also holds an MBA from the University of Alberta. Before founding blueBell Village, he worked as a practicing engineer in the energy sector.

Lori La Bey, host of Alzheimer's Speaks, with Samuel A. Simon, who wrote and performed the play Dementia Man. Dementia Caregiving: Challenges and Success

Eboni talked about the importance of understanding what success means in caregiving, as it can change throughout the journey and depends on individual goals. They also touched on the different caregiving styles and how they can sometimes clash within families. Lori emphasized the need for open communication and flexibility in caregiving approaches.

Eboni shared the importance of open communication within families caring for a loved one, emphasizing the need to assign tasks based on individual comfort levels rather than assumption. She introduced the "7 Pillars of Successful Caregiving," which include self-care, empathy, empowerment, kindness, patience, communication, and active listening. Eboni also highlighted that while these concepts may seem intuitive, they often require clear definition in caregiving situations, particularly patience and kindness, to avoid disempowering the person receiving care.

Self-Care and Empathy in Caregiving

Dr. Green emphasized the importance of self-care, highlighting the need to prioritize and be intentional about nurturing well-being through activities such as reading, listening to music, or exercising. Lori shared her experience of creating a quiet space during her workday to manage anxiety and stress. Eboni explained empathy in caregiving as understanding a person's diagnosis and unmet needs while empowering them to maintain independence, contrasting it with sympathy, which can lead to dependency. Both agreed on the significance of empowering clients or loved ones to maintain their ability to function as independently as possible.

They emphasized the value of kindness, simplicity, and patience in caregiving, noting that patience should be balanced to avoid inaction. Enhancing Caregiving Through Communication

Dr. Eboni Green and Lori discussed the importance of effective communication and active listening in caregiving, the need for intentionality, and awareness of one's own body language. They highlighted the value of sharing knowledge and insights within care teams to improve consistency and teamwork. Caregiver Action Plans: Essential Steps

She shared a six-step process on the Caregiver Support Services site, which includes starting with self-care and gathering necessary paperwork. Both agreed that plans should be flexible and updated as circumstances change.

Dr. Eboni  Green wrapped up discussing her caregiver support website, which offers tools like a six-step action plan, a wellness U-Model with nine components, and training resources for both family and frontline caregivers. She highlighted the importance of her book's seven pillars of successful caregiving and shared insights on handling challenging situations like client anger, depression, and grief. Lori encouraged listeners to share the information and resources, emphasizing the value of community support in caregiving. They agreed to promote the content further next week and discussed potential disruptions due to solar activity.

The Hannan Center story is amazing and shines a light on Luella Hannan, the founder and philanthropist who had a laser focus on understanding community needs, forged roads on how to care way ahead of her time. Despite facing legal challenges, she established a model for supporting older adults that later influenced Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Our host, Lori La Bey, talks with Vincent Tilford, the President and CEO of the Hannan Center, a Detroit-based nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults in metro Detroit. With over 30 years of leadership in housing, community development, and aging services, he has expanded Hannan’s endowment, implemented a fund development plan, and led major facility renovations supporting dementia care and the arts. 

Hannan's Centennial Senior Support Celebration

Vince discussed Hannan's 100-year history of supporting seniors to age in place, including their current programs like the Emerge Art Festival, which demonstrates how art improves health outcomes for older adults. The organization celebrated its anniversary through events at the Detroit Historical Museum, a centenarian celebration featuring interviews and gifts, and an upcoming 70 Over 70 awards ceremony recognizing 70 individuals across seven categories.

Vince emphasized that purpose and community connections are essential for aging well, referencing Blue Zones research, which found that having a sense of purpose and being part of an intergenerational community are key factors for longevity.

Creative Aging at the Hannan Center

Vince discussed the Hannan Center's mission to support seniors through creative aging programs, including the Beyond U curriculum and art gallery, which showcases older adult artists. He highlighted the Emerge Art Festival, a juried competition for artists 55 and older, and emphasized the importance of art as a tool for connection between caregivers and care recipients.

Vince also described the social work program, which provides case management, counseling, and community resource navigation, supporting approximately 1,500 people annually, including an adult day program for those with dementia.

Adult Day Program Operations Overview

Vince discussed the history and operations of an adult day program that opened in January 2020 and closed in March of the same year due to COVID-19, before reopening a year later. The program, which operates from 9 to 5, offers affordable care for individuals with dementia diagnoses and provides significant support for their caregivers through various programming and services.

Vince highlighted the importance of building trust with caregivers and mentioned initiatives like quarterly spa days, support groups, and evidence-based programs from institutions like the Rosalyn Carter Institute and Johns Hopkins University to help caregivers manage challenging behaviors associated with dementia care.

Improving Senior Care Through Relationships

Lori and Vince discussed challenges in adult day care and senior housing, particularly staffing issues and turnover rates. Vince highlighted their program's success in maintaining low turnover through relationship-based care, competitive wages, and training, achieving a client-to-staff ratio of 3-4:1. Lori expressed frustration with the lack of stability and trust from her own experience looking for care for a loved one, as well as comments from members of support groups dealing with all companies, large and small. She emphasized the need for consistent, relationship-focused care, especially for individuals with dementia.

Facility's Approach to Participant Agency

Vince explained that their facility is located on Wayne State University's campus, providing access to interns from the School of Social Work, nursing school, and occupational therapy school for field placements. He emphasized that while they offer various activities, they do not push participants to engage if they are unwilling, instead focusing on increasing the agency of individuals in their program.

Lori highlighted the importance of balancing engagement with relaxation, referencing Harry Urban's experience with dementia, and Vince agreed, stressing that their programming aims to develop skills and talents rather than just keeping participants busy. Vince also discussed their use of occupational therapy to assess participants' well-being and provide caregivers with valuable insights.

Quality Care for Aging Residents

Vince and Lori discussed the importance of providing quality care for older people, emphasizing the need for compassionate and dedicated staff who enjoy working with this demographic. They highlighted how misconceptions about aging can lead to surprising discoveries about residents' capabilities, such as engaging in activities like sewing.

Vince shared an example of a program involving residents making throw pillows, which impressed caregivers and provided residents with a sense of purpose and competence. Both agreed on the significance of understanding the perspective of those living with dementia, referencing movies like "Still Alice" and “A Timeless Love" to illustrate the diverse approaches families take in caring for loved ones with dementia.

Dementia Care and Support Initiatives

Lori and Vince discussed the importance of recognizing and nurturing the capabilities of individuals with dementia, emphasizing the impact of supportive environments and relationships. Vince shared insights about the Daybreak program, which serves 45-50 families annually and supports both participants and caregivers through transitions and behavioral challenges. They explored the value of adapting to life changes, allowing for meaningful connections and shared experiences, and discussed the complexities of Medicare enrollment.

The Unequivocal Rights of PLWD to Express Themselves

 Lori La Bey and Leah Bisiani explore the importance of dignified, personalised relationship-based support for all individuals living with dementia.

The conversation touches on the need for better support systems as the aging population grows, and the importance of listening to people living with dementia.

The ladies discussed the recent International Dementia and Innovation Conference in Bali, where people with dementia were given a platform to share their lived experiences and provide a voice of advocacy for all people living with dementia.

They discussed the Aashaya Jasri Resort, also in Bali, which offers an “inclusive disability-enabling” holiday experience, designed for people living with dementia and people with disabilities, to enjoy a holiday in paradise.

Dementia Stigma and Respectful Discussion

Leah and Lori discussed the need to change societal perceptions and conditioning about dementia and those who live with it, emphasizing the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect by upholding their human rights.

They highlighted how negative portrayals and terminology contribute to stigma and prejudicial bias, and agreed that people with dementia deserve advocacy, support, and understanding.

The conversation also touched on the monetization of fear by big businesses and the importance of addressing normal human responses to unmet needs in relation to the person, “listening” to what they are trying to communicate, as opposed to labelling people living with dementia, and describing changes in behaviour as problematic.

Dementia Support: Person-Centered Approach

Leah and Lori discussed how critical it is to emphasize the importance of understanding changes in behaviour as authentic responses to feeling misunderstood, devalued, and disrespected.

They highlighted the need for person-centered support that addresses both medical, physiological, psychological, cognitive and emotional needs, advocating for a shift in how society perceives people living with dementia.

Lori noted the lack of relationship-focused training in care settings, while Leah agreed and stressed the significance of nurturing relationships through providing inclusive, meaningful engagement for people living with dementia, enabling them to continue life as they know it, and live well with dementia.

Engaging Older Adults with Dignity

Lori and Leah discussed the importance of recognizing and engaging with older adults, particularly those with dementia, to prevent feelings of invisibility and loneliness.

They highlighted the prevalence of undiagnosed depression among older people in residential aged care and the need to differentiate between depression and dementia.

Leah shared her research findings with the results suggesting that 4 older people supposedly living with dementia, post treatment of depression, returned to full cognitive function, and had been misdiagnosed with dementia, when they really had chronic depression.

Lori and Leah emphasized the importance of understanding individual and specific needs and providing environments that promote emotional well-being and a sense of control.

They agreed that aging well initiatives should prioritize maintaining a person’s dignity and quality of life, acknowledging the diversity of the human population, and that “going without is not an option”.

Dementia Communication and Technology

Lori and Leah discussed the challenges faced by individuals with dementia, placed upon them by society, including bullying and misconceptions about their condition. They emphasized the importance of adapting communication methods to accommodate those with dementia, highlighting the significance of non-verbal communication. They also touched on the impact of technology on social interaction, noting a shift towards less face-to-face communication among younger generations, which is going to have a huge effect on future care.

Dementia Communication and Support Strategies

Leah and Lori discussed the importance of understanding and communicating with people who have dementia, highlighting the need to adapt communication methods that respect cognitive capabilities and other age-related conditions that may impact well-being.

Leah shared her experience in managing homes for people living with dementia, where she provided support that enabled people to thrive and live well with dementia, highlighting the success of personalized, relationship-based frameworks that eliminate stress-related responses and promote joy and happiness. They both agreed that these learnings are applicable beyond dementia support, enriching personal and professional lives.

Legacy and Empowerment in Healthcare

Leah and Lori discussed the importance of leaving a legacy in healthcare, emphasizing the need for succession planning and empowering teams.

They shared personal experiences and strategies for creating change, including regular job description reviews and open-door policies.

Leah highlighted the significance of recognizing and nurturing staff, while Lori emphasized the impact of small, consistent changes.

Leah finished off with one of her quotes:

“Evidently, we are accountable for nurturing our own humanity to support civilisation, and value the cultivation of kindness, by respecting our vulnerable older population, and especially people living with dementia.

We must acquire the ability to develop compassion; we should critique isolation and reintroduce community and culture changes, subsequently refining our great power and precision in response to a more humane philosophy.

Today, Lori La Bey talks with RJ Scarelli, who recently published his 1st children’s book about the effects of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The book is titled For Those I Knew and Loved Before.  RJ wrote the book in honor of his grandmother, who lost her battle to Alzheimer’s back in 2021, as well as caregivers and families who are either taking care of a loved one with these neurodegenerative diseases or who have lost someone to dementia.

RJ’s story depicts a unique perspective of a young child who grapples with her grandmother’s diminishing condition and rapid memory loss. Ultimately, it gives the reader a vulnerable yet simple way to approach this difficult subject and allows young readers to effectively grapple with watching those they love the most struggle as their journey with Alzheimer’s and Dementia progresses.

RJ hopes his book will help children explore big emotions and unfamiliar changes in a safe, age-appropriate way. His story can open the door for honest conversations about memory loss, while emphasizing that love and connection remain, even when memories fade.

Jodie Johson has supported her son Zachary's journey with Down Syndrome and Acute Myelogenous Leukemia at age 6 months. In honor of Zachary, in 1993, Jodie and her husband Scott started The Zachary Johnson Kids with Cancer Fund at Riverwood Healthcare Center, their local hospital foundation. They also give out monetary gifts to kids with cancer in their surrounding area. They have helped over 103 children.
