Long ago Anton Chekov, the famous and well-known Russian writer wrote some beautiful stories. They were comic stories but conveyed an important message about exploitation. The veteran Indian Playwright, Actor and Director, Dinesh Thakur, adapted and presented these stories as an enjoyable play called AAPAS KI BAAT.
In an entertaining, informal chat the writer talks about the various stories fighting for space in his mind and presents four of them to us, his audience, as a play with a full cast of characters.
In the fourth story, EK DIN BANK MEIN the ever helpful Bank Manager is stumped by the travails of a woman who walks into his bank one morning. He is ready to offer sympathy but surely not money which belongs to the bank!! But the woman is not ready to take no for an answer and chaos ensues!

In the third story, PAANI MEIN DOOBNE WALA AADMI our writer is accosted by a man who earns his living by drowning himself. The fact that he does not know how to swim makes this reality show quite real or is too real??!

AAPAS KI BAAT.

In an entertaining, informal chat the writer talks about the various stories fighting for space in his mind and presents four of them to us, his audience, as a play with a full cast of characters.
The characters belong to different classes and levels of society and are placed in very different situations.

एक अरसे पहले प्रसिद्ध रूसी लेखक एंटोन चेकोव ने कुछ बहुत ही ख़ूबसूरत कहानियाँ लिखीं, इन कहानियों में हास्य के साथ साथ शोषण के बारे में भी एक महत्वपूर्ण संदेश था । जानेमाने, अनुभवी नाटककार, रंगमन्च और सिनेमा के अभिनेता और निर्देशक, दिनेश ठाकुर ने इन कहानियों को एक मनोरंजक नाटक आपस की बात के नाम से रूपांतरित और प्रस्तुत किया ।

AAPAS KI BAAT Part 1 | MILLI AUR MALKIN

लेखक बड़े ही दिलचस्प और अनौपचारिक अंदाज़ मे अपने ज़ेहन मे अनेक कहानियों के बीच चल रही दव्नद को ज़ाहिर करता है और उनमें से चार कहानियों को अपने दर्शकों के लिए, सभी पात्रों सहित, एक नाटक के रूप में प्रस्तुत करता है। ये पात्र समाज के अलग अलग वर्गों और स्तरों से संबंध रखते हैं और उनकी परिस्थितियां भी एक दूसरे से जुदा हैं।

जहाँ पहली कहानी ‘मिली और माल्किन’ में, गुरबत मे पली मिली, माल्किन के रवैये को लेकर अपनी तनखा पाने के लिए चिंतित है, वहीं दूसरी कहानी ‘औरतों को फँसाने वाला आदमी’ में, सुमित रीता को अपने इश्ख के जाल मे फसाने के लिए उसके ही पति निखिल का इस्तमाल कर रहा है! तीसरी कहानी, ‘पानी में डूबने वाला आदमी’ में, समुद्र तट पर टेहल रहे लेखक को. एक अनोखा आदमी मिलता है, जो ख़ुद समुद्र में डूबकर लेखक का मनोरंजन करना चाह्ता है- यही उसकी कमाई का ज़रिया है! तो चौथी कहानी ‘एक दिन बैंक में’ में, कुछ रूपये वसूलने के लिए, एक दिन एक त्रस्त महिला बैंक में घुस आती है और सब कुछ अस्तवयस्त हो जाता है!

ये कहानियाँ मज़ेदार और हास्यपूर्ण तो हैं ही, साथ ही समाज मे हो रहे शोषण के बारे में एक प्रखर जागरूकता भी लाती हैं। कभी कभी ये समझना मुश्किल हो जाता है कि शोषक कब शोषित बन जात है और शोषित कब शोषक हो जाता है या फिर क्या हम सब शोषक है और किसी न किसी स्तर पर हम सभी का शोषण हो रहा है?

In the first story, MILLI AUR MALKIN, the mistress talks down to her maid Milli while in the second story, AURTON KO PHASANEWALA AADMI, Sumit tries to woo Reeta, the object of his desire through her own husband Nikhil!
In the third story, PAANI ME DOOBNEWALA AADMI, a random guy appears on the beach, attempting to sell his unique brand of entertainment to the writer by drowning himself in the sea.
In the fourth story, EK DIN BANK MEIN, another random woman just enters a Bank looking to extort some money and chaos follow!

The stories are funny and enjoyable but also bring about an acute awareness of exploitation. Sometimes it becomes difficult to tell when the exploiter becomes the exploited and when the exploited turns exploiter or is it true that we are all exploiters and at some level, we are all being exploited?

मशाल एक पुरजोश सम्वाद है - एक युवा लड़की रुख़साना को इत्तेफ़ाक से क्रांतिकारी लेखक शौकत मिर्ज़ा साहब की कविताओं की एक किताब मिल जाती है, जो उसके मन मे उठ रहे ज़िंदगी के अनेक गम्भीर सवालो का जवाब बन जाती है। हर रोज़, हर तरफ, ऐसे हालात हैं जो अवसाद और निराशा को आमंत्रित करते है- लगता है कि समाज की भलाई में किसी की कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं, हर बात को लेकर सिर्फ विरोध और विवाद ही मकसद है। इस विनाशकारी राजनीतिक और सामाजिक कार्यप्रणाली ने ऐसा नकारात्मकता का माहौल पैदा कर दिया है जिसमे हमारे युवा ख़ुद को दिशाहीन और हतोउत्साहित महसूस करने लगे हैं।

शौकत मिर्ज़ा साहब को मुशकिल से ढ़ूँढ़ निकालने पर, रुख़साना की उनसे तहेदिल से गुज़ारिश है कि जो दूरी उन्होने समाज से सालो से बना रखी है वो उसे ख़त्म करें, रुख़साना जैसे अन्य दिगभ्रमित युवाओं को प्रेरित कर उनमें उत्साह की ज्योति जलायें । आज के इस दूषित वातावरण में, प्रेरणा की इस मशाल को जलाय रखना बेहद ज़रूरी है ताकि हमारे युवा निरंतर एक बेहतर समाज और राष्ट्र के निर्माण की ओर अग्रसर रहें। युवाओं की शक्ति को फिर से संगठित करना अत्यावश्यक है जो अन्यथा एक राष्ट्र के विनाश का कारण बन जायेगी!

क्या उदासीन और एकांतप्रिय मिर्ज़ा साहब मदद करने के लिए राज़ी होंगे ??

Mashaal is an encounter between a revolutionary writer, Shaukat Mirza Sahab, and a young girl, Rukhsana. Rukhsana comes across a book of revolutionary poems that seems to provide answers to many of her nagging questions about life and the circumstances in which we find ourselves. There are so many things that seem to be going wrong around us every day over which we have no control – picking up the newspaper is like inviting depression and despondency! Nobody seems to be interested in the well-being of society, only in confrontations and controversy. A destructive political and social agenda has created an atmosphere of negativity where the youth find themselves floundering and demotivated.

Having found the writer of this inspiring book, Rukhsana beseeches him to come out of his self-imposed exile – such that he may inspire other young people like her who are fast getting disillusioned to hold aloft the flame – the Mashaal. In this vitiated atmosphere, it is so important to re-ignite the flame so that the youth may continue to aspire towards a more beautiful society and nation, it is imperative to reconstruct the power of youth which otherwise would spell doom for a nation!

प्रेमचंदजी निर्विवाद ही आधुनिक हिंदी साहित्य के प्रणेता रहे हैं और उनकी कुछ कहानियों से तो ये अनुमान लगाना ही असम्भव है कि ये दशकों पहले लिखी गई हैं – ऐसी ही एक कहानी है, मनोवृत्ति, 1900 के दशक की शुरुआत में लिखी गई मनोवृत्ति आज भी उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है जितनी उस समय थी - शायद आज के दौर में और भी अधिक प्रासंगिक है।

मनोवृत्ति, हमारे वो मानसिक दृष्टिकोण एवँ व्यवहार है जो हमें विरासत में मिले है या हमनें अपने आस-पास के समाज से अनायास ही अपना लिये है और अब हमारे मौजूदा व्यक्तित्व का हिस्सा बन गये है। लेकिन बदलते समय के साथ इन मनोवृत्तियों पर और साथ ही अपने मानसिक दृष्टिकोण एवँ व्यवहारिक तौर - तरीक़ो पर ख़ास ग़ौर करने की आवश्यकता है ।

एक युवती पार्क में बेंच पर आराम से सोती हुई पाई जाती है और सुबह की सैर करने वाले पुरूष और पार्क में दौड़ने आये युवाओं के साथ-साथ सैर करने आई महिलाएं भी, अपनी सोच के अनुसार, उस युवती के बारे मे विभिन्न निष्कर्ष पर पहुंचते हैं।

लेकिन जैसे ही युवती नींद से उठती है और अपनी पहचान बताती है, उनके व्यक्तिगत पूर्वाग्रह, दृष्टिकोण और जीवन के प्रति उनकी सोच पूरी तरह उजागर हो जाती हैं ।

Premchandji is the undisputed father of modern Hindi literature and some of his stories completely defy the passage of decades – Manovritti written in the early 1900s seems as relevant to us today as it may have been then – perhaps even more relevant today.

Manovritti is that set of attitudes and behavior that we seem to have inherited or acquired from the society around us, sometimes even unconsciously and this has resulted in making us the personalities that we are. But times are changing and perhaps there is a need to consciously look at these attitudes and question our behavior patterns.

A young girl is found comfortably fast asleep on a park bench and the morning walkers and younger men running in the park, as well as women out for a morning stroll, jump to various conclusions. Their individual biases, attitudes, and outlook on life become apparent when the girl awakens and identifies herself!

4 मार्च 1921 को बिहार के पुनिया जिले के औराहीहिना गंव मे जन्मे रेणुजी अपनी माटी, अपने गंवई गंव के लोगो की जीवन कथा को, उनकी सांस्कृतिक सम्पन्नता को, उनके मन की कोमलता को बड़े ही मार्मिक ढंग से प्रस्तुत करते हैं. आंचलिकता के रंग मे सराबोर, सामाजिक सारोकार लिये ये कहानी, सिरपंचमी का सगुन, रेणुजी ने 1958 मे लिखी थी.

अंक स्टूडीओ की भूमिका रेणुजी के लिये और भी सारगर्वित हो जाती हैं क्योंकी अंक के संस्थापक- निर्देशक, सवर्गिय दिनेश ठाकुरजी और रेणुजी के बीच मधुरता का सम्बंध रहा. अकसर रेणुजी मुम्बई मे दिनेशजी के निवास पर ही ठहरते और उनके बीच पत्र व्यवहार भी रहा.

सिरपंचमी के दिन पूजा के साथ जुताई का श्रीगणेश किया जाता हैं. बैलो को नहलाकर नये हल-फाल, पूजा के फूल और प्रसाद के साथ किसान परिवार खेतों पर उतरते हैं. उस दिन कोई अपसगुन न हो इसका ध्यान सभी रखते हैं.

ऐन सिरपंचमी के दिन ही कालू कमार ने सिंघाय के हल का फाल टेड़ा कर दिया- अब सिरपंचमी पर खेत कैसे जोते सिंघाय. खैन समय पर न देने का इतना बड़ा बदला लिया कालू कमार ने? पर असली कारण माधो की मां जानती हैं. अपने बेटे माधो को पास बिठाकर परेशान हैं सिंघाय - उसके टेड़े फाल को कोई नही छुऐगा आज पर माधो की मां सगुन को बिगड़ने नहीं देगी- रेलवे मिस्त्री पुल पर काम कर रहे हैं कई दिन से

माधो की मां के आग्रह पर रेलवे मिस्त्री ने फाल को सीधा किया. सगुन शुभ तो हो गया पर बदनामी के आसार बन आये- फाल सीधा कैसे हो गया - रेलवे मिस्त्री लोग क्या यूं ही काम कर देते हैं किसीका?

क्या करे सिंघाय- घर और बाहर कैसे सम्भाले - और कालू का क्या- कालू कमार से बैर मोल लेकर गुज़ारा कैसे हो?

Born on the 4th of March 1921 in a small village in the district of Punia in Bihar, Phanishwarnath Renu succeeded in bringing alive, the social, emotional and rich cultural fabric of his people, through his stories. Full of regional colour and the existing social perspective, this story, Sirpanchami Ka Sagun flowed from Renuji’s pen in 1958.

Ank had a special place in Renuji’s heart- our Founder-Director Dinesh Thakurji and Renuji shared a special bond. They corresponded often and Renuji made it a point to stay with Dineshji when he visited Bombay.

But Singhai’s fortunes were fractured even before the festival could begin- as Kalu, the blacksmith rendered the blade of his plough crooked! Singhai had been late with his payments to the blacksmith but then so had been many others. Singhai had been compensating with produce from his fields so he could not fathom the reason for Kalu’s actions - his wife, however, could very well guess! But more importantly what were they to do - no other blacksmith would touch their plough now & the auspicious hour was almost upon them!!

Singhai’s wife recalled that the railwaymen were working to repair the old railway bridge. The younger one had seemed to have a rather glad eye. Maybe they could be persuaded to help…

Thanks to his wife’s quick action, Singhai succeeded in joining the others for the puja but speculations grew rife and rumors arose…..what indeed could have persuaded the Railwaymen to help?

Singhai didn’t know what he could do about the situation -at home & outside… and what about his equation with Kalu….he could hardly afford to be at bad terms with the village blacksmith!

SUHAG KI SARI - PART 2

On 8th February, 1921 Gandhiji addressed a meeting in Gorakhpur as part of his Swadeshi movement beseeching citizens to reject their Govt jobs. Munshi Premchand was part of this meeting and fired by the zeal of the freedom struggle he made up his mind to renounce his Govt job of 22years. With a family of eight to feed and with prospects of no income in sight but nevertheless with the support of his wife, Premchandji abandoned his job as a teacher in Govt schools

The Britishers had ruined the Indian economy. All cotton produced in India was procured and sent to England. The Industrial revolution had sprouted many cloth mills in England which used this cheap cotton to produce cloth which was then used to flood the Indian market. As a result Indian weavers and craftsmen had lost their livelihood and the populace faced poverty and starvation. Gandhiji had started the Swadeshi movement to counter this exploitation insisting on the use of only Indian made goods and burning of all foreign made cloth. As a soldier of the freedom struggle Premchandji used his pen to support the movement.

Although made of mill cloth, the particular Sari was a most auspicious one for Gaura and a symbol of her prosperous marriage – how was it possible to commit it to flames – it would be most inauspicious inviting the wrath of the Gods. But her husband Ratan Singh was one of the leaders of the movement and could not be seen to be living a lie! Could Gaura reconcile herself to this gross inauspiciousness and would the burning of this single sari really help the national movement?

Fanishwarnath Renu along with Premchand has been hailed as the story teller of the Indian masses- depicting the extraordinary lives s of the colonial & post colonial ‘ordinary men’. Whereas many of Premchand’s stories talk about economic hardships of the rural people, Renu, based in Bihar, touches more upon their emotional, cultural and ethical world. Together these two great writers bring alive for us the history of our people, in all its colours, in far more detail than any historical tome.

On the death of her husband, although it is the duty of the eldest daughter-in -law to continue to make her husband’s home her home; in the face of the ill treatment meted out to her and the economic hardships faced, she decides to send a message of help to her mother. The old haveli is no longer what it used to be and stripped of its riches by the other brothers who have departed for the city, she is left to fend for herself without any resources. Hargobin, the traditional messenger-Samwadiya- is aware that this is a message that must be conveyed in all its delicateness and all its detail. But the departure of the elder daughter-in-law from her husband’s home would also be a blot on the honour of the village. As he sets off on this important errand, torn by the anguish of the daughter-in-law, Hargobin is aware that it is the duty of the Samwadiya to convey the message in all its truth.

Renu beautifully brings forth the emotions of a culture steeped in duty, loneliness and personal hardship.

संवदिया फणीश्वर नाथ रेणु की कालजई रचना है । संवदिया एक अंचल विशेष की कृति है जिसमे घर की बड़ी बहु की क्या भूमिका होती है उसे रेणुजी ने बड़े मार्मिक ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया है। जहाँ पत्र-व्यवहार नहीं हैं वहाँ संवाद पहुंचाने वाले, संवदिया की मनोदशाओं का रेणु जी ने लाजवाब चित्रण किया है ।

ये कह्ना गलत नही होगा की बीहार की भुमी से लिख रहे, फणीश्वर नाथ रेणु, मुंशी प्रेमचंद के सचे उत्राधिकारी बने। रेणु प्रेम्चंद के बाद ग्रामीण जीवन के सबसे प्रमुख कथाकार है। दोनो कथाकारो ने साधारण पात्रो के जीवन कथा की रचना की है। प्रेमचंद की अधिकांश कहाँनिया इन पात्रो के आर्थिक शोषण का चित्रण है जबकी रेणु ने इन सताये हुए पात्रो की सान्सकर्तिक सम्पन्नता, मन की कोमलता और रागात्मकता तथा कलाकारोचित प्रतिभा का मार्मिक चित्र प्रस्तुत किया है। ये दोनो महान कथा शिल्पी मिलकर उस साधारण मनुष्य का पूरा चित्र दे पाते है।

संवदिया- ऐसे ही साधारण मनुष्यो की कहानी है – घर की बड़ी बहु, पती के मर जाने के बाद, घरवालो से परेशान,खाने-पीने को त्रस्त, दुख-दर्द से लैस, हरगोबिन संवदिया के द्वारा अपने नैहर, अपनी मॉ के पास संवाद भेजती है. परिवार वालो की निर्दयता और बड़ी बहुरिया का दुख खूब समझते हुए भी हरगोबिन संवाद पहुचाने मे अपने आप को असमर्थ पा रहा है – ये तो संवदिया के धर्म के खिलाफ है - क्या हरगोबिन अपने मन को मार कर बड़ी बहुरिया का सम्वाद मॉ तक पहुंचा पाता है, क्या बड़ी बहुरिया को नैहर का सुख फिर मिल पाता है? क्या घर की बड़ी बहु अपना सामाजिक कर्तव्य निभा पाती है? संवदिया- कहानी मानवीय सम्वेदना से ओतप्रोत भावुक प्राणीयो की।

Based on a true incident related by a friend, Tejendra Sharma’s Sandigdh deals with the baser human emotions of vindictiveness and revenge. Shahid is beholden to his wife Shahida, a British citizen for his job as an Immigration officer and his prosperous life in London.

A bit of a philanderer, he resents her possessiveness and is constantly drawn to the willing, inviting arms of his colleague, Simona!

When Shahida takes her annual trip home to Lahore in Pakistan, Shahid wastes no time getting together with Simona. He now starts thinking of ways to keep Shahida away from him in Pakistan and as an immigration officer finds that there is an option available to him – if he can get her labeled as a terrorist, there will be no return to London for Shahida.

But can he take this awful step against a woman he once loved? What about their children whose culture is now completely British? Sandigdh, by an award-winning writer of our times, tells us how our bad deeds have a way of hurting us the most!

Trouble erupts in the North-Western frontier regions of undivided India when an overzealous Maulvi arrives at a hamlet living in communal harmony with each other. But his discriminatory, provocative speech creates so much disharmony that the other community has to abandon its land and home, and possessions to escape prosecution. Even as they try to find a safe haven, fired by the Maulvi’s speeches, they are relentlessly pursued by the Pathans who give them a simple choice – change your religion or give up your life!

Dharamdas and Khazanchand both of whom harbor affections for Shyama, come under the firing line! Shyama reciprocates Dharamdas’s feelings who is the more dashing of the two but is terribly disillusioned when he succumbs to the easier choice! Khazanchand however stands his ground! Will a massacre of the community now follow?.......

इस कहानी में प्रेमचंदजी ने उस मानवीय संवेदनशीलता और सहज दयालुता, को बेहद ही ख़ूबसूरती से दर्शाया है जो धर्म और राजनीति से परे है, ।

परेशानी तब शुरू होती है जब एक अति उत्साहित मौलवी, अविभाजित भारत के उत्तर-पश्चिमी सीमांत क्षेत्र के एक ऐसे गांव में पहुंच जाता है जहाँ सब लोग एक-दूसरे के साथ सांप्रदायिक सद्भाव बनाए मिलजुल कर रहते हैं । लेकिन मौलवी के भेदभाव पैदा करने वाले , भड़काऊ भाषण इतना असामंजस्य पैदा कर देते हैं कि दूसरे समुदाय के लोग अपनी जान बचाने के लिए अपनी जमीन और घर और संपत्ति को त्याग कर पलायन करने पर मजबूर हो जाते हैं । भागते, सुरक्षित ठिकाना ढ़ूँढ़ते ये लोग पठानो से घिर जाते है। मौलवी द्वारा भड़काये गये धर्मान्धता मे डूबे पठानो ने उनके सामने एक मात्र विकल्प रखा कि या तो ये लोग अपना धर्मांतरण करलें या मौत को गले लगाने के लिये तैय्यार हो जाये ।

धरमदास और खज़ानचंद जो दोनों ही श्यामा पर रीझे हुए हैं इस स्थिति का शिकार हो जाते हैं ! श्यामा की भावनाय धरमदास से जुड़ी हुइ है जो ख़ज़ानचन्द से अधिक तेज़तर्रार है, लेकिन धरमदास को आसान विकल्प के आगे झुकता देख श्यामा का मोहभंग हो जाता है, जबकी ख़ज़ानचन्द पठानो का विरोध करता हैं ! क्या अब इस समुदाय का नरसंहार होगा ?.......

After her young husband’s death, Pyari’s father-in-law, Shivdas, a fairly well-to-do farmer tries to help give her life new meaning by involving her more fully in household responsibilities. Pyari takes them on reluctantly and although full of anguish at her fate, in trying to find a new life purpose, begins to run a more efficient household, even sometimes to the irritation of the other family members!

But in a few years Shivdas passes away and Pyari’s sister and brother-in-law, Dulari and Mathura decide to go and work in the city, away from the vicissitudes of farming life - taking their children with them, leaving Pyari quite alone...

All the old anguish comes rushing back…… Will Pyari survive this……..

Premchandji is the undisputed father of modern Hindi literature and his stories trace the emotional history of the people of this land.

प्यारी के युवा पति की मृत्यु के बाद, उसके ससुर, शिवदास, जो काफी संपन्न किसान हैं, प्यारी को घरेलू जिम्मेदारियों में पूरी तरह से शामिल कर इस कोशिश मे जुट जाते है कि उसे जीवन मे एक नई राह मिल सके । अपने भाग्य पर प्रलाप करती हुई प्यारी उन ज़िम्मेदारियों को अनिच्छा से गृहण कर लेती है और नये उद्देश्य खोजने की कोशिश करने मे गृहस्थी को इस अधिक कुशलता से चलाने लगती है कि परिवार के अन्य सदस्य कभी कभी उससे जलने भी लगते हैं ।

कुछ वर्षों बाद शिवदास का भी निधन हो जाता है और प्यारी की बहन और बहनोई, दुलारी और मथुरा अपने बच्चों को अपने साथ लेकर , खेती की परेशानियों और झंझटो को छोड़ शहर में जाकर गुज़र बसर करने का फैसला कर लेते हैं..और प्यारी नितांत अकेली रह जाती है ।

एक बार फिर प्यारी सारी पुरानी मनोव्यथाओं और वेदनाओं से घिर जाती है……क्या वो इन सब से उभर पायेगी……..

निस्संदेह प्रेमचंदजी आधुनिक हिंदी साहित्य के निर्विवाद जन्मदाता हैं और उनकी कहानियाँ इस देश के लोगों के भावनात्मक इतिहास की कहानी हैं।

A poignant story about Gopaldasji who now lives with his son in London since he has no immediate family left in India. He has been a freedom fighter in the past and a patriot and is most unhappy at having to take on British citizenship but it’s a global world out there and a British passport is most convenient. Having to swear allegiance to the British crown creates much anguish for Gopaldasji. He feels he is betraying his motherland and that is not a life he finds worth living…..

But then the Indian Govt announces its scheme of dual citizenship, Gopaldasji is thrilled that his life will soon become purposeful again….

….Govt announcements however take their own time in turning into practical reality….

Tejendraji writes with a deep feeling for the expatriate soul and his stories find an echo in the lives of many ex-pats. Tejendra Sharma is a very well-known name in contemporary Hindi literature. He is the first British Hindi fiction writer to be awarded a member of the British Empire. He is the author of more than two dozen books, he is a poet, storyteller, serial writer, and actor too.
