Visa Wellington on a Plate (VWOAP) is championing 245 burgers hoping to take the crown for their burger award this month.

Three of those burgers are on the chopping block in the studio today as VWOAP Director Beth Brash joins Nick Mills and newsreader Max Towle in the studio for a taste test. 

The burgers are Saigon Taste's Grandma's Secret, Yoshi Sushi's Teriyaki Heatwave and Vonunts' Plum't-based.

You know I was listening Ryan Bridge this morning and he said something, and I said to myself Ryan, you are so right. 

No wonder I listen to Ryan first thing in the morning, and he is very good first thing in the morning by the way. 

He touched on something when he talked about his trip to Bunnings. 

Now, firstly he started talking about, it was rainy and cold, so he took his dog for a walk in Bunnings. 

So instead of being out in the rain he was taking his dog for a walk to get exercise.  

You already know where I stand on that. It's Ryan so it's okay. 

I don't think dogs belong wandering around inside retail stores, but that's a debate for another day. 

The part of Ryan's story that really struck a chord with me wasn't the dog. It was the service. 

Tell me honestly, when was the last time you walked into a big box store and there was great service within a couple of minutes? 

Big box stores are the big boys - I'm talking about Bunnings, Mitre 10, The Warehouse, Kmart, Briscoes, Chemist Warehouse – all those huge stores where you can buy just about anything... except, sometimes, a staff member. 

It drives me absolutely nuts. 

You walk in looking for one simple thing.  

A particular screwdriver. A specific light bulb. A certain paint sealer. Maybe a perfume or a kitchen gadget.  

You don't know where it is, so naturally you go looking for someone who works there. 

That's where the real challenge begins. 

You wander up and down aisles, scanning for a red shirt, a blue shirt or whatever uniform they're wearing.  

Eventually you find somebody, only to hear, "Sorry, that's not my department," or, "You'll have to ask someone else." 

Really? 

We were talking about this in the newsroom this morning, and one of my colleagues looked at me as if I was from another planet.  

They said, "Why don't you just use your phone? Go onto the store's website. It'll tell you what aisle it's in." 

But that's not shopping. 

If I've got to stand there on my phone searching your website, checking stock levels, finding the aisle, comparing products and reading reviews, what exactly is the store staff there for there anyway? 

I'm not against technology. Far from it. If I'm making a big purchase these days, I'll use AI to compare prices and work out the best deal. It's brilliant for that. 

But technology should support good service, not replace it. 

I remember the old days at Bunnings.  

There was an older bloke at the front door, John from Lyall Bay.  

He knew that store inside out.  

I'd walk in and say, "John, where's this?" Bang – aisle 64.  

"What about this?" Bang – aisle 53. He'd often tell you which product was actually worth buying as well. 

That knowledge wasn't in an app. It was in experience. 

Ryan's story was exactly the same.  

He spent nearly 20 minutes trying to find a product, was told to use AI, then discovered the staff didn't even know where the product was in their own store. 

Surely we've got this the wrong way around. 

I'd rather see fewer dogs wandering around hardware stores and a few more knowledgeable staff who actually know the products, know the store, and can point customers in the right direction.

She questioned the speaker's treatment of different MPs and suggests not everyone plays by the same rulebook.

Nick Mills spoke to Swarbrick to get the details from the incident.

She says the Greens have made formal complaints about the leniency from the speaker towards certain ministers.

When asked about the standard of behaviour in parliament, Swarbrick told Mills " it's not so much a schoolyard in there these days, as much as it's a barnyard".

The sites are the old Miramar oil storage tank, Courtenay Place Heritage Area, the Karori Tunnel, the Kelburn Viaduct, the former General Headquarters Building on Taranaki St.

Mayor Andrew Little and Deputy Ben McNulty wrote to the RMA Minister to ask to investigate the cases of these buildings back in May.

McNulty joined Nick Mills on the show this morning to share his excitement of the potential to remove the status from these sites. 

He said it is stupid" the Miramar tank is under heritage status and removing the label off these sites is a "no brainer for our city's economy".

Imagine if I said to them, "go back to your own country".  

Not once, not twice, but three times.  

Imagine if I said they couldn't possibly understand democracy because they weren't born here, they were born somewhere else. 

 I'd quite rightly be fired.  

There'd be outrage.  

I'd be on the front cover of the Post. I would be.  

There'd be calls for my organisation to do a public apology.  

Yet that is exactly what New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters said in Parliament toGreen MP Dr. Lawrence Xu-Nan.  

So when I saw this story yesterday, I genuinely worried whether I'd missed something.  

I thought to myself, boy, this is going to be an outcry, boy this is going to be big.  

Have suddenly world rules changed? Or do they just actually apply to some people?  

I don't want people jumping on me here and telling me that I'm having a crack at Winston Peters and this is all about me and Winston Peters.  

I'll be clear. I often agree with Winston Peters and on some issues I think he's 100% right. But that's not the point.  

The point is whether the standards we expect in public life apply equally to everyone in every situation.  

I've spent decades employing people in hospitality. I've had chefs and staff from all over the world.  

Like any employer, I've had disagreements and difficult conversations.  

But can you just imagine if I turned around to one of my chefs and said, "go back to your own country".  

You don't understand democracy, that's where they lie like a flat fish.  

Can you imagine what the Employment Relations Authority would have done to me?  

Once again, front page of the paper.  

I would have been dragged through the system and my reputation would be gone.  

Fortune and legal fees and quite possibly my business.  

No employer in New Zealand would get away with saying that to an employee.  

So why does it seem different when it's said by one of the country's most senior politicians?

Does parliamentary privilege allow too much?  

Dr. Xu-Nan has lived in New Zealand since 1994.  

He arrived here as a child, went to school here.  

Yet Winston Peters told him to go back to your own country.  

Claimed he'd only been here 5 minutes, suggested he knew little about democracy because he was born in China and later doubled down outside the debating chamber calling him an "arrogant twit".  

Now forget about whether you like the Greens or Dr. Lawrence Xu-Nan.  

Forget about whether you vote Green, National, Labour or New Zealand First.  

Ask yourself one question. 

If another politician had said exactly those words about someone born overseas, would their reaction have been the same? 

Because it seems to me that we've reached a point where we can judge comments not by what is said, but who says them.  

Now, Parliament should be the place where ideas are challenged and politics are debated.  

It shouldn't be a matter where someone was born.  

If you've chosen New Zealand, made your life here and earned your place in Parliament, then challenge the arguments, not whether they belong here.  

For me, this isn't about Winston Peters.  

It's about consistency.  

Either go back to your own country as acceptable in New Zealand politics or it isn't.  

Either we have one standard for everyone or we don't.  

Maybe you'll tell me it was just the heat of parliamentary debate. 

Maybe you'll say he was justified and that's fine.  

But I look at this and think if almost anyone else had said those words, anyone, in a workplace, a school, a radio station, or even having a heated argument over something like road rage.  

Imagine if I had a road rage this afternoon and said, go back to your own country. Do you think I'd be here tomorrow morning?

Xu-Nan joins the show with Nick Mills this morning to share his reaction on the remarks, and the behaviour allowed in parliament.

When asked if he thought Peters was being racist, Xu-Nan said "the comments speak for themselves". 

He also bought up the lack of accountability from not only Peters, but the Prime Minister as the leader of cabinet. 

Xu-Nan said he has received an outpour of support, proving "there is more goodness here in Aotearoa New Zealand than a few comments here and there".

I could read it, shake my head, get angry to myself and move on. I could say,  

"Well, there you go. Another emergency department horror story. Another report. Another apology. Another promise it'll never happen again."  

Because, sadly, we've been talking about this stuff for years. 

Or I could do what I think we have to do, and that's keep talking about it. 

I will speak about these stories as many times as it takes.  

Because if we stop talking about it, we start accepting it. And I refuse to accept it. 

Think about this for a second. A 55-year-old man walks into Wellington Hospital with burning chest pain.  

The pain is radiating into his left shoulder.  

He's got a family history of heart attacks.  

He's got elevated blood pressure. Every alarm bell should have been ringing. We've all seen the TV ads, we understand them. 

Instead, he waits. And he waits some more 

Not 30 minutes. Not an hour. 

He waits four and a half hours before he's seen by a doctor.  

More than five hours after arriving, an ECG finally confirms he's having a heart attack. 

Five hours. 

The Health and Disability Commissioner has now ruled that Health New Zealand failed to provide an appropriate standard of care. They didn't need AI for that did they?  

The investigation found he should have been treated as a higher priority and should have had an ECG during his initial assessment.  

This is not earthmoving, is it? 

On that night the emergency department was running at 200 percent occupancy and was ten nurses short. 

Now look, I know the staff in our emergency departments work incredibly hard.  

I know they're under pressure. I know there are hundreds of stories where nurses and doctors perform miracles every single day. This is not about blaming the people on the floor. 

This is about a system that keeps putting good people into impossible situations. 

Because here's what really gets me. That man could have been me.  

He could have been your husband, your wife, your dad, your mum, your brother, your sister or your best mate.  

None of us thinks we're going to be the one sitting in an emergency department waiting for someone to realise we're having a heart attack. 

And that's what scares me. 

I'm also tired of hearing what they're going to do. We're always promised reviews, action plans, better training, audits and future improvements. Fine.  

But at some point the promises have to be results. 

Because this isn't about politics. 

It isn't about headlines. 

It's about whether, when the worst day of your life arrives, a health system, the New Zealand health system, is there when you need it.  

And right now, I don't think that's a question any of us would be comfortable asking.

Attorney General Chris Bishop has highlighted the bill breaches Section 7 of the Bill of Rights Act, where once a minimum sentence was complete, any further imprisonment should be justified on account of risk to the public, rather than as a punishment.

When I first heard this story, I thought this is not right, this is not fair, and I didn't think it fitted with what the coalition government stood for. 

What am I talking about? Of course, I'm talking about the $60 million hand out. 

I have to say, if you'd asked me whether I'd ever see a centre-right government stepping in to financially support a publicly listed company, I would have said with a smile, "No chance."  

Not because governments shouldn't support business, but because I always believed governments like this preferred to let the market decide who succeeds and who fails. 

Yet here we go. 

The Government is preparing to provide financial support to Fletcher Building, one of New Zealand's biggest companies, through a deal designed to keep local cement production alive at Golden Bay Cement in Whangārei.  

Fletcher Building isn't some small family-owned business that's fallen on hard times.  

It's one of New Zealand's biggest publicly listed companies, listed on both the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges, with thousands of shareholders and operations across the country and Australia. 

Now, before anyone says this is about jobs, I completely understand that argument.  

Hundreds of people work there directly and indirectly, and New Zealand does need a reliable supply of cement.  

It's a critical product. I get all that. 

We need it to build houses, schools, hospitals, roads and major infrastructure.  

You don't want to wake up one day and realise we're completely dependent on imported cement if global supply chains are disrupted. 

Chris Bishop said Golden Bay is an exceptional case and of national interest. 

But here's the question I can't get past. 

When did governments start picking winners? 

Because that's exactly what this feels like to me. 

This coalition government talks constantly about reducing government intervention, letting markets work, encouraging competition and creating a level playing field.  

Those are all principles I generally support.  

If you're prepared to step in and financially back one of the country's biggest listed companies, where does it stop? 

What about every other manufacturer battling high energy prices? 

What about forestry? Steel? Food processing? Hospitality? Retail?  

Plenty of businesses have faced enormous cost pressures over the past few years without anyone offering them a government lifeline. 

Why is this one different? 

If this is genuinely about New Zealand's strategic resilience and making sure we continue producing cement here, then tell us that. Be upfront about it.  

Make the case that this is about national infrastructure and supply security. 

But don't pretend this isn't government intervention. 

Because it damn well is.  

60 million, cash hand out. It's not having to be paid pack. 

Governments have every right to protect strategically important industries if they believe it's in the national interest. 

But once taxpayers' money starts flowing towards large, publicly listed companies, the public deserves a very clear explanation of why this company qualifies, what safeguards are in place, what taxpayers get in return, and where the line is drawn. 

This isn't just about cement. 

It's about the role of government in the economy. 

More importantly to me it's about fairness. 

And it's about whether this Government is practising the free-market philosophy it campaigned on, it sung from the rafters—or whether, when push comes to shove, it's prepared to back the biggest players while everyone else is left to fend for themselves.

I start the programme this morning with incredibly sad news that last night, New Zealand lost one of its true greats. 

Sir Sam Neill has died. 

Now, I'm not going to spend the next hour listing every film he made or every award he won, because, quite frankly, we already know what Sir Sam Neill achieved.  

We know the remarkable career he built. We know the incredible body of work he leaves behind.  

From Sleeping Dogs to The Piano, from Jurassic Park to Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and so many memorable performances in between, he became one of the most recognisable Kiwi faces worldwide. 

He didn't just represent New Zealand. He represented us with dignity, humour, intelligence and class. I’m so proud to think he was the person representing us on the world stage. 

Only a few months ago he was talking about beating cancer again.  

His family said he died suddenly, surrounded by those he loved, peacefully and with the dignity that defined his life. There's some comfort in that, even though the loss feels enormous. 

I've never actually met Sir Sam. 

The closest I ever came was years ago.  

There were always rumours he owned a house at the end of the street where I lived.  

One day I happened to see him standing quietly at the top of his driveway, waiting for a taxi. That was it. 

No conversation. No introduction. Just one of those little moments you remember. 

I'll remember exactly where I was when I heard he'd died.  

I was sitting in the car at the traffic lights outside Rutherford & Bond. Funny how news like this freezes a moment in time forever. 

Some people leave an impression on your life even if you never met them. 

Sir Sam Neill was one of those people. 

He was an extraordinary actor, a proud New Zealander, a storyteller, an internationally acclaimed winemaker, an advocate for the places and people he loved, and by all accounts, a genuinely decent human  

This morning isn't just about remembering a brilliant actor. 

It's about remembering one of us, one of our own, who became a true, true international icon. 

Sir Sam Neill. 

Rest in peace.

The Jurassic Park actor passed away unexpectedly on Monday 13th July in Sydney surrounded by his family.

Nick Mills spoke to NZ film producer and founder of Gibson Group Dave Gibson who shared his memories of Neill. 

While Neill was well-known for his international roles, Gibson says what really cemented him as a NZ icon was his "very, very kiwi parts", like Uncle Hec in Hunt for the Wilderpeople. 

Gibson said was "the top of the mountain" of Kiwi film and a great guy.

"We don't have a lot of people like Sam."

In New Zealand the gender pay gap is 5.2% for women, 12% for Māori wahine and 16% for Pacific women. Cribb believes more transparency from businesses will shut the gap and allow fair pay.

But it’s one word: trust. 

Who do we trust in politics? 

Do we actually believe what politicians tell us anymore? 

Because if we don't, then don’t we have a real problem? 

This latest story involving Te Pāti Māori MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke has genuinely disappointed me.  

Not because she's from Te Pāti Māori. Not because she's young. Actually, because she represented something different. 

She arrived in Parliament as one of the new generation.  

Young, energetic, hugely popular on social media, someone many people thought could genuinely inspire young Māori to get involved in politics.  

Whether you agreed with her politics or not, there was a sense that she could become a powerful voice for her people, young people. 

That's why this matters. 

Stuff has now questioned a series of social media posts where Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke appeared to claim credit for work that ministers say she wasn't involved in. 

The latest involves extending free breast screening from age 69 to 74. 

The policy was promised before the 2023 election by then National health spokesperson Shane Reti, funded in the 2024 Budget and is now being rolled out.  

Yet Maipi-Clarke posted that she had been "supporting the minister" and described it as an announcement she'd been working on since last year.  

After questions were raised, the wording of that post has suddenly changed. 

And this one really stings for me.  

I've known a number of Māori women, people very close to me, who've battled breast cancer.  

So, when a young Māori wāhine appears to be claiming a significant role in something so important for her own people, if that claim isn't accurate, that's incredibly disappointing.  

For me breast cancer is too serious to become part of anyone's political image. 

But it's not just this. 

Last week another social media post was deleted after questions were raised about claims she'd spent 65 percent of her time advocating for young people in prisons and youth justice facilities. 

According to the article, the office of the Corrections Minister said she had visited one prison once since becoming an MP, while the Children's Minister said she had never visited, or even asked to visit, an Oranga Tamariki youth justice facility.  

Those are enormous differences between what people were led to believe, what we were told and what ministers say actually happened. 

Every politician likes to put their best foot forward. Every politician celebrates wins. 

But here’s the line. 

If you supported a policy, say you supported it. 

If you campaigned for a policy, say you campaigned for it. 

If you delivered it, then by all means take the credit. 

But don't leave thousands of followers believing you've done work you may, or probably have not done. 

Social media is where many New Zealanders, me included now get their political information. Watch, study and keep in their minds. 

That means politicians have an even greater responsibility to get it right. Even greater responsibility to tell the damn truth. 

Because if we can't trust what our elected representatives are telling us online, then what exactly are we supposed to believe? 

Politics doesn't need more spin. 

It needs more honesty. 

And I think New Zealanders deserve exactly that.

I have been one of the strongest supporters of giving police the power to move rough sleepers on.  

I've said repeatedly that we need to clean up our streets.  

We need safer city centres.  

We need people sleeping in parks, doorways and shop entrances helped. 

Helped into accommodation, not just left there. 

But yesterday, watching Q+A, I found myself asking a very different question. 

At what cost do we achieve that? 

Because if the allegations uncovered by Q+A are correct, this isn't just about reducing emergency housing numbers anymore.  

It's about whether government targets have created pressure inside MSD that could influence decisions affecting some of our most vulnerable people. 

Documents obtained under the Official Information Act show MSD managers are assessed on a range of performance measures, including reducing the number of people receiving emergency housing grants.  

Staff are graded as "exceeding", "achieving" or "needs improvement", and the documents state that if performance doesn't meet expectations, an improvement plan can follow. 

So we are grading people on whether they keep people out of emergency accommodation. 

That should concern every New Zealander. 

The Auckland City Mission says these targets create an incentive to say no.  

The Christchurch Methodist Mission says nobody should ever be rewarded for denying someone a basic thing like shelter. Those are serious claims. 

Now, MSD says emergency housing targets are only one of 11 performance measures and no one faces disciplinary action based solely on that target. That's important context. 

But even Housing Minister Tama Potaka appeared surprised.  

On Q+A he said he wasn't aware of the performance agreements.  

Initially he described them as an operational matter and couldn’t talk about it, but later admitted he could understand why reasonable people might see them as creating an incentive to refuse legitimate applications. 

What else could it be seen as? 

That answer didn't fill me with confidence. 

Yes, the Government inherited an emergency housing system that had exploded.  

Nearly 5,000 people were in emergency accommodation in late 2021, costing around $340 million a year.  

Reducing those numbers is a worthwhile goal. In fact, the Government reached its target five years early, with emergency housing falling to just 591 people by the end of 2024. 

But here's the issue. 

If someone genuinely needs emergency housing, they should get emergency housing. Full stop. 

End of story in New Zealand. 

Targets should measure how quickly we get people into stable, permanent homes—not how effectively we reduce the headline numbers. It’s election year, of course they want to headlines to look better. 

Q+A also found that for 16 consecutive months there were more than 1,000 additional inquiries about emergency housing each month than formal applications.  

So, people were saying they needed a house but were put off from actually putting an application in because staff were grading them, stopping them. 

The most common reason given when applications weren't approved was simply, "the need can be met in another way." 

The need can be met in another way? Was that living in a shop front? Was that living in a car? Was that staying in the park?  

We can always make the stats look better, can’t we? But this matters. 

This matters because the Government also wants police to have new move-on powers over rough sleepers. Put them in jail, which I’m not fully against.  

If people are being turned away from emergency housing while at the same time being moved off the streets, where the hell are they supposed to go? 

This story has the potential to become a defining issues of this election—not because New Zealanders don’t oppose tough rules, but because as Kiwis we expect some kind of fairness. 

Clean up the streets by all means. 

Just don't clean up the stats at the expense of the people who genuinely need help.

This is one of those stories that leaves you feeling angry, frustrated and, most of all, heartbroken for a little girl and her family. 

A five-year-old girl has been left with serious facial injuries after being mauled by a dog that had been released from the Porirua pound just one day earlier. 

According to evidence presented in court, the dog, called Thanos, had already attacked an 18-year-old family member in January.  

That attack resulted in facial injuries, antibiotics and treatment. The dog was impounded and classified as dangerous. 

But after the owner asked for it to be returned, the council released it, warning the owner that the adults at the Cambridge property where it was going to live had to be told about the risks and the need for vigilance. 

Then came the tragedy. 

The very next day, a five-year-old girl was in a garage playing fetch with the dog.  

The dog that had just been released after attacking an 18 year old. 

The dog was not wearing a muzzle. It was not on a lead.  

It attacked her, causing horrific injuries to her cheek and lip. 

She required surgery to repair what doctors described as a complex wound. Blood supply had to be restored.  

Today she carries scars across her lip, beside her nose and under her eye and it is horrific. 

And that's where my sympathy lies this morning.  

Not with the council, bad decision. Not with the dog owner, horrific decision. Not with the dog which knows no better. 

With a little girl who will likely remember this for the rest of her life. 

I love dogs. I've owned dogs. Most dog owners are responsible people.  

But we are making a mistake in this country when we start pretending dogs are people. 

They're not. 

They're animals. Some are powerful.  

This dog had already shown aggression. It had already attacked someone.  

Yet somehow, within 24 hours of being released, it was around a young child without the most basic precautions being taken. 

Knowing that this dog had attacked someone before.  

That to me is simply not good enough. 

Owning a dog is a privilege. It's not a right.  

And when a dog has already shown it can attack, the responsibility on the owner becomes even greater.  

Once a dog has attacked, there is no ifs no buts no maybes they have to be put down. Simple. Simple, because they will do it again.  

The lesson from this story is simple. Love your dogs. Care for your dogs.  

But never ever forget what they're capable of doing. 

Because when people get complacent, it's innocent children who end up paying the price.

Well, it's done and its dusted. 

The biggest decision Wellington has made in years has finally been made, and the Golden Mile, as we knew it, is effectively dead. 

And before anyone starts celebrating too loudly, let me say this: I think it's the right decision, right now. 

I think common sense has prevailed. 

I think if the council had pushed ahead with years of construction through Courtenay Place and Lambton Quay, there would have been a trail of closed businesses behind it. Not a few. Not one or two. Dozens. 

I've spent my entire working life around hospitality and retail. I know how hard it is right now.  

Costs are through the roof, customers are watching every dollar, and many businesses are still hanging on by their fingernails. 

You only have to walk down Courtenay Place in daylight hours to see it. 

Empty shops. For lease signs. Businesses trying their guts out to survive. 

Then imagine putting that area through years of roadworks and disruption. 

Nine out of ten businesses wouldn't have survived it. 

So yes, stopping the project was the right decision. 

But here's the part nobody should be celebrating. 

This wasn't a decision about Wellington's future. 

This was a survival decision. 

That's the difference. 

A city that is not confident, not growing, is a city under financial pressure. 

It starts cancelling projects because it simply can't afford them. 

And that's where Wellington finds itself today. 

Because let's be really honest. Courtenay Place is a mess. 

It's grotty. It's tired. It's dirty. 

I have a business on that street.  

I know landlords who have spent millions of dollars, in some cases more than a millions dollars, into strengthening buildings, upgrading premises and trying to create something better. 

But there are landlords that have done nothing, that have land-banked and its time the council put huge pressure on them to do their bit and do something. 

Yesterday I walked through Courtenay Place and counted 26 people loitering around, not a good look. 

We used to talk about street kids. Now we've got street adults. 

 Fighting. Yelling. Drinking. Defecating in public spaces.  

Intimidating people trying to walk down the street, do a bit of shopping, have a drink or go to work. 

You can spend $100 million on footpaths and bus lanes, but if people don't feel safe, they won't come. 

That's the reality. 

If somebody handed me the job tomorrow and said, "Nick, fix Courtenay Place", the first thing I'd do wouldn't be redesigning intersections. That would be the bottom of my list.  

I'd clean up the social disorder. 

The moving in laws have to come in so we can move on.  

Because until people feel safe walking the street, until businesses feel supported, until customers want to come back, nothing else matters. 

The Golden Mile might be gone. 

But the challenge remains. 

Wellington avoided a potentially disastrous contract.  

Now the hard part starts. 

Because Courtenay Place still needs fixing. 

And unlike the Golden Mile, that problem isn't going away.

Can I ask a simple question this morning? At what point does being prepared become being overprotective? 

Now before anyone jumps on me and has a crack at me, let me make one thing crystal clear. Safety comes first.  

If lives are genuinely at risk, authorities should act.  

Nobody wants to see people injured or killed because someone was too slow to make a decision. 

And I'm certainly not suggesting we ignore severe weather.  

In fact, the latest figures show between March 2025 and the end of February this year, we had a damaging storm every eight days on average.  

More than 33,000 insurance claims were lodged for flooding, wind and storm damage. 

The risks are real. 

But Wellington has now been through another state of emergency over predicted waves and high winds, and the reality is that what was forecast simply did not eventuate.  

Mayor Andrew Little himself acknowledged that the predicted conditions "hadn't materialised.” 

There had been no reports of major damage. The state of emergency has now been lifted. 

So, my concern now is: are we becoming too quick to shut the city down? 

I did some rough calculations this morning, because this whole thing concerns me greatly. Wellington's economy is worth around $56 billion a year.  

Spread that across a normal working year and you're talking about roughly $200 million of economic activity every weekday.  

Even if only 10 or 20 percent of that is disrupted because people stay home, businesses close, customers disappear and workers can't get into the city, that's potentially tens of millions of dollars affected. 

Yesterday I walked into a well-known clothing store in the CBD and asked how it was going, didn’t even think about the state of emergency. 

The answer? They hadn't had a single customer all morning. 

Is that because of the weather? Maybe partly. The weather was fine in the city. 

Is it because the city was under a state of emergency? I'd bet dollars to donuts that played a major role.  

If you're told your city is in a state of emergency, you're probably not heading into town to buy a new jacket. 

Then think about the ripple effects— 

Parents scrambling with childcare, employees worried about getting home and small businesses, already battered by years of economic hardship, losing yet another trading day. 

Preparation and resilience are good things. Panic is not. 

And here's the other thing. We are Wellingtonians.  

We are proud to be Wellingtonians. 

We live in one of the windiest capitals in the world.  

Windy Wellington.  

We know what a southerly look like, and some of us actually love southerlies. 

We know what big seas look like. We live on a coast. 

Storms are part of living here.  

Meanwhile, Wellington Airport remained open and aircraft continued landing. State of emergency and our major international airport was open. 

Life carried on, in many respects. But in the back of everyone of everyone's minds: state of emergency. Panic, panic, panic.  

Of course, authorities acted on the advice they had, and Mayor Little has defended the decision by pointing to the destructive 2020 storms and the uncertainty of forecasting.  

I’m not saying what we did was wrong, I’m saying do we need to be more careful. 

There will also be a review of the declaration, and that's exactly as it should be. 

But perhaps we need a wider conversation.

A mandatory evacuation order is in place for about 350 homes from Ōwhiro to Breaker bay - excluding Lyall Bay.

MetService issued the warning for Cape Terawhiti to Turakirae Head in Wellington and Turakirae Head to Mataikona in Wairarapa.

Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) urge people to take the warnings very seriously.

WREMO spokesperson Dan Neely told Nick Mills on Wellington Mornings there are roadblocks in evacuated areas and emergency services cannot reach those who stay.

Official advice is to stay away from coastal roads, don't put yourself at risk. Neely said these were the highest waves he's seen in his time here.

Now we know. 

Nearly 9,000 public sector jobs gone by 2029.  

A 14 percent reduction.  

Public service numbers down from just over 63,000 to around 55,000.  

Government departments merged.  

AI and digital tools replacing roles.  

Nicola Willis says it’ll save $2.4 billion.  

David Seymour says it’s “just what the doctor ordered.”  

The Greens are calling it New Zealand’s version of DOGE. 

And Wellington? Wellington wakes up this morning feeling like it’s gone another round in the ring with Muhammad Ali. 

Bang. Bang. Bang. 

In quick succession. 

No time to recover. No time to breathe. No chance to get back on your feet before the next hit comes. 

But here’s what really struck me out of all this news: 

If anyone thinks it’s strange the Government is doing this before next week’s Budget — think about it for a second. 

This is the soft blow before the big blow comes. 

This is the mowing of the lawn before they land the plane. 

Governments don’t soften people up before good news.  

They soften people up before harder news.  

And maybe the reality is the Budget next week is going to be tougher than many Wellingtonians are ready for. 

Now look — I’m not going to sit here this morning and pretend the public service was never going to change.  

It grew massively after COVID.  

Technology and AI are changing every industry in the world.  

Every sector is having to adapt. Everyone has to. 

But what worries me is this city’s confidence. 

Because every time one of these announcements lands, spending stops instantly.  

People stop buying coffees. Stop going out for dinner. Stop booking weekends away. Stop replacing clothes. Stop taking risks. 

And Wellington businesses feel it immediately. 

But at some point, we’ve got to stop sitting around asking what Wellington used to be — and start asking what Wellington is going to become. 

Because if the old model of Wellington being powered almost entirely by government jobs is changing, what’s the new model? 

How do we fix Wellington? 

Seriously. 

Do we double down on hospitality, events and culture? Do we become the creative capital again?  

The tech capital? The startup capital? 

Do we back tourism harder?  

Do we make this city easier to invest in, easier to build in, easier to open businesses in?  

Do we stop fighting growth and actually encourage it? 

Do we make it easier to do business in Wellington? 

Because sitting around waiting for another ministry to lease another office floor on The Terrace probably isn’t the future anymore. 

And I know this is a shock for a lot of people this morning. I genuinely do. There’ll be families scared about mortgages, jobs, rents and what comes next. 

But Wellington cannot afford to become a city that only talks about decline. 

At some point we’ve got to shrug our shoulders, get on with it, and work out how we and this city succeed again. 

What the hell do we do to make Wellington great again?

Look, this one’s not going to make me popular in Wellington today, but sometimes reality doesn’t care whether we like it or not. 

Finance Minister Nicola Willis is right. 

And deep down, I think a lot of New Zealanders know she’s right. 

We cannot keep running a country where the answer to every problem is another ministry, another department, another communications team, another layer of management, another policy advisor, another taxpayer-funded office somewhere in Wellington. 

At some point, we all have to wake up and say: enough. 

Because the numbers don’t lie. 

Back in 2017, when Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister, the public service had around 48,000 employees.  

By the end of last year, that had climbed to more than 63,600 fulltime staff.  

That’s an increase of more than 15,000 public servants in under a decade. 

And here’s the key question: are we New Zealanders genuinely getting better outcomes? 

Are the roads dramatically better? 
Is healthcare dramatically better? 
Is education dramatically better? 
Is productivity dramatically better? 
Do you and I feel government is faster, leaner, more efficient? 

Or does it feel bigger, slower, more bureaucratic and more expensive? 

Because that’s what many New Zealanders think. 

Now I understand why Wellington gets nervous when these conversations happen.  

This city has lived off the back of government growth for years.  

Thousands of jobs, entire apartment blocks, cafes, bars, retails, hair dressers, car sales, businesses, office buildings just for the public sector. 

But we cannot employ people simply to prop up the Wellington economy. 

That’s not sustainable economics. That’s avoidance. 

And the reality is, New Zealand has been living beyond its means for too long.  

We borrow too much. We spend too much. We create agencies for everything.  

We duplicate work. We layer management on management.  

Meanwhile, the private sector — the people actually generating the tax revenue — are under enormous pressure and have already slimmed down to bare bone. 

At some point the country has to slim down too. 

And yes, it will be painful.  

And yes, there will be more pain. 

Nicola Willis is reportedly preparing to reduce the number of ministries and agencies from the current 42, while also driving public service numbers back closer to the historical norm of 1% of the population. Under the Labour government it was pushed to 1.2%. 

Frankly, that idea sounds reasonable to me. 

Australia has 16 departments. The United Kingdom has 24. Finland has around a dozen. We’ve got 42. 

We have forty-two. 

And the other reality nobody wants to say out loud?  

AI and digitisation are coming whether we like it or not.  

The private sector is already changing rapidly.  

Law firms, banks, consultancies — they’re all using AI to improve productivity and reduce repetitive work. 

Government won’t escape that. 

The Government should not escape that.  

This isn’t about attacking public servants personally.  

Most are hardworking people doing their jobs.  

But the system itself has become too large, too expensive and too inefficient. 

If we genuinely want the books under control, improve productivity and rebuild the country’s finances, then this is part of the medicine. 

And tell me, have you ever taken medicine that tastes good. It doesn’t it tastes horrible.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop joins Nick Mills to talk about the opneing.

The project will provide a new walking and cycling route between Wellington and Lower Hutt and improve transport reliability and resilience along SH2 and the Hutt Valley rail line. 

Bishop says the project is100 years in the making but serious planning began in 2013/2014, and cost $350 million.

Let’s be honest now — when is enough actually enough in this city? 

How long have Wellingtonians been listening to the words “Let’s Get Wellington Moving”?  

Seven years? Eight years? Longer? The project was officially launched back in 2017.  

Nearly a decade ago. Nearly a decade of workshops, consultations, artist impressions, reviews, counter-reviews, delays, blowouts, political infighting and endless promise for us. 

And what do we actually have to show for it? 

Seriously — what do we have to show for it? 

Because I walk through the start of the so-called Golden Mile redevelopment near the Embassy Theatre almost every day, and if you told a visitor from out of town that millions of dollars had already been spent there, they would laugh at you.  

They’d say, “Where? How? A few plants? Some shifted paving? A slightly rearranged pedestrian area? A cycleway?” 

That’s the transformational city-shaping project we’ve been arguing about for the best part of a decade? 

Meanwhile the city struggles. 

Retailers are struggling.

Businesses are struggling.

People are worried about rates.

Roading’s a mess.

Water infrastructure is collapsing. 

Construction costs have exploded. 

The council can barely afford what it already has on its plate. 

And now we’re spending another FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS on another review. 

Another review. 

Not fixing anything. 
Not building anything. 
Not deciding anything. 
Just another group of people sitting around discussing whether previous groups of people were right or wrong. 

I’m with Andrew Little on this one.  

At some point politicians have to actually make political decisions. If you were elected to lead, then damn well lead.  

Stop outsourcing every difficult decision to panels, consultants, independent reviews and strategic assessments. 

The original Golden Mile budget was in 2020 was $78 million. 
Then it became $160 million. 
Now it’s sitting around $220 million. 
And even Andrew Little is saying the council simply cannot afford another $60 million blowout. 

Hello! You wouldn’t need a degree to work that one out. 

So here’s the simple question: 
If we can’t afford it, why are we pretending we can? 

Because what’s happened in Wellington is death by consultation. 

Death by process. Death by indecision. We have become a city addicted to talking about things instead of actually doing them. 

And here’s the worst part — this uncertainty has hung over central Wellington businesses for years. Years.  

People trying to invest, lease buildings, open restaurants, run cafés, survive construction disruptions, they want to employ staff — all while the city keeps changing the plan every six months. 

Enough. 

Either do the project properly, fully funded, with certainty and timelines — or pull the plug and let us move on with our lives. 

And now. Not in 6 months' time – now. 

But this endless middle ground of reviews, pauses, re-scopes and consultant reports is draining the life, confidence and energy out of Wellington. Forget it 

Nearly a decade in, Wellingtonians deserve an answer and now. 

Not another workshop, not another panel.

Let’s start this one with a show of hands. Who’s been to the tip lately? 

I want you to be honest. I’ll start.  

I reckon I’m a regular at the tip, I think I’ve been a dozen times this year.  

House clean-ups, business clear-outs, all the stuff that’s just easier to throw away than deal with properly.  

Out of sight, out of mind. Job done. 

Except—it’s not. 

Because right now, Wellington has a rubbish problem that’s getting worse, not better—and this isn’t opinion, this is straight fact. 

Our main dump, the Southern Landfill, is now expected to hit capacity in about four to five years.  

Last time we talked about it, it was ten years. That’s been pulled forward from around eight. 

So already, the clock’s ticking faster than anyone planned. 

And here’s where it ramps up. 

Over in Porirua, Spicer Landfill is due to close in 2030. Sounds like someone else’s problem, right? It’s not. Because when Spicer goes, it takes pressure off nowhere—it pushes it straight back onto Wellington. 

Yes, there’s a plan. A sludge dryer up at Tītahi Bay, meant to shrink the volume. Sounds good.  

Problem is—it might not be ready in time. Even the people behind it say finishing by 2030 is “ambitious”. 

In fact, Wellington’s Deputy Mayor Ben McNulty has already said closing Spicer effectively chops years off the life of the Southern Landfill—taking it from a good scenario of about seven years down to four. 

Now here’s the part that should really make you sit up. 

Every year, this region produces around 8,000 tonnes of sewage sludge.  

Not rubbish you can skip. Not something you can pause. It’s a by-product of wastewater treatment—you cannot turn it off. 

And right now, officials are warning there is a real risk that when Spicer closes, there may be nowhere to put it. 

Now think about that for a second. 

We’re not talking about old couches or broken fridges—we’re talking about essential waste from a system that has to run 24/7.  

If there’s nowhere for it to go, you don’t have a tidy-up problem—you’ve got a system problem.  

So we’ve got less landfill space, more pressure on what’s left, and the backup plan might not land when it needs to. 

And if you think the answer is just “build more landfill”—not so fast. Local iwi, including Ngāti Toa Rangatira, and residents are strongly opposed to extending these sites.  

Cultural concerns, environmental concerns, plain old quality of life. 

So that option? Politically and socially—very, very hard. 

Which leaves us where? 

More waste. Less space. No clear plan. 

And I’ll put my hand up—I’m part of it. It’s easier to dump than sort it out. Easier to pay the fee and drive away. 

But we cannot keep doing that. 

Because if we don’t get ahead of this—fast—the next thing creeping up the valley won’t just be a landfill. 

It’ll be a crisis we cannot ignore.

There's moments in this city where you stop, you look at the numbers, and you think — this cannot be real. And it happens too often. 

This cannot be happening to us. And yet it is, here we go again. 

A bill of half a billion dollars — possibly pushing $590 million — just to roll out water meters across the region.  

Now think about that for a second, please.  

This is not fixing the pipes. Not stopping the leaks.  

Not upgrading the system that’s literally spilling out under our feet every single day.  

No — just for water meters. 

We were told this would be under control. 
We were told this was the plan. 
We were told this would fix things. 

Back in 2020, the estimate was $144 million.  

Thenall of a sudden it doubled to $300 million.  

Then $412 million.  

Now we’re staring down the barrel of nearly $600 million. 

That is not a plan to me— that is a runaway train. 

And I go back — I keep going back — to that moment a couple of years ago in New World, doing my shopping, bumping into former councillor Tim Brown.  

He looked me in the eye and said he’d just come from a water meeting, he said “water rates are going to go crazy.” 

Well Tim, with respect — you undersold it. 
You didn’t say: “Get ready to wonder if you can actually afford to live here anymore.” 

I wanted more from you, if you knew it was that bad I wanted you to tell me to pack up and get out of town quickly, because it cannot be any worse. 

Because that’s where we’re heading. 

This is the part that really gets me: we’re being told this is necessary, that this is smart, that this is the fix. No one disagrees with that. 

And yet even supporters are saying the numbers are — and I quote — “nonsensical.” 

When you’ve got politicians, former councillors, and everyday Wellingtonians all looking at the same figure and using the same word — nonsensical — maybe, maybe, just maybe, it is. 

That’s not just inefficient. That’s madness. 

And this is from a person that wants to have water meters, I’m supportive of water meters. 

And I’ll say something that might make a few people uncomfortable this morning: why are we insisting on doing this ourselves if we clearly don’t have the expertise?  

Even Tim Brown is questioning whether the new entity has the capability to run this rollout. He says they have no inhouse expertise on metering. 

So here’s a radical idea — put it out to the world.  

Tender it internationally.  

Get the best operators, the most efficient systems, the sharpest pricing.  

I don’t care if they come from Asia, Europe, wherever — just get it done properly, do it once and do it a hell of alot  cheaper. 

Because right now, this city is becoming unaffordable. 

You’ve heard me say it before — and I’ll keep saying it — how the hell are ordinary Wellingtonians supposed to stay in the city and keep up with these payments?  

How do we do it? 

At some point, enough is enough. 

And I reckon for me, we are there now.

 And as a New Zealander watching all of this unfold, what I wanted—what I think most of us wanted—was a clear, confident line about where we as a country stand. 

Instead, we’ve got emails, pushback—and a pretty uncomfortable question about who’s actually in charge. 

Because cast your mind back to that first stand-up.  

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, fronting media, being pushed hard—simple question: does New Zealand support the strikes? 

And he couldn’t give a straight answer. 

He said we “acknowledge” them—but wouldn’t say support, wouldn’t oppose.  

And at the time, that felt messy and unclear.  

It felt, frankly, like a bit of a wobble—and that’s when the questions around his leadership really started to heat up. 

But now—now we’ve got a bit more context. 

Because the emails released under the Official Information Act show that, behind the scenes, Luxon was at least open to shifting New Zealand’s position—looking at aligning more closely with countries like Australia, who explicitly supported the US-led action. 

And at the very same time, Foreign Minister Winston Peters and his team were saying: absolutely not. 

The advice was to hold the line. Stay neutral.  

Don’t move toward explicit support—it would be “imprudent” and against New Zealand’s national interest. 

So now you look back at that  dress disastrous stand-up and you have to ask: was Luxon unclear because he didn’t know what he thought? 
Or was he being pulled in two different directions at once? 

Because that’s a very different story. 

Now, here’s the interesting part.  

The position we ended up with—that careful middle ground of acknowledging but not supporting—actually lines up with public sentiment.  

An Ipsos poll in April showed 87% of Kiwis don’t want military involvement, 83% think it would escalate things further, and about three-quarters don’t think it’s worth higher fuel prices. 

So the outcome? Probably right. 

But the process? That’s where this gets shaky. 

Because what we’ve seen is internal disagreement, emails being released publicly by the Foreign Minister’s office, a late-night Beehive meeting—and an admission from Peters that releasing those emails was a mistake. But Winston Peters doesn’t make mistakes. 

That’s not a Government speaking with one voice. 

And I’ll say this—Winston Peters is experienced, he’s a global operator, and he knows exactly how to play the diplomatic game.  

But when it starts to feel like he’s the one holding the reins, and the Prime Minister is reacting— 

You’ve got to ask the question: 

Who’s actually running the country?

Here’s the thing — I just don’t buy the outrage, and I actually think this needs to be called a bit more straight. 

Christopher Luxon pulling out of his regular Monday slot on Breakfast isn’t some constitutional crisis.  

It’s not democracy under threat. It’s a political decision — and honestly, just say it for what it is. 

Don’t dress it up, don’t spin it.  

If Luxon doesn’t want to sit there every week and get carved up by Tova O'Brien, then just say that.  

If he and his media team — and yes, people like Rachel Smalley advising behind the scenes — have decided that format isn’t helping him, then fine. That’s politics. That’s strategy. Own it. 

Don’t hide behind “changing media consumption habits” or scheduling tweaks.  

Just front-foot it: this isn’t working for us, we’re moving on. I’ve got no issue with that — in fact, I respect it more when it’s said plainly. 

Now, the facts. Luxon hasn’t disappeared.  

He’s still doing interviews — including with Radio New Zealand and Newstalk ZB — and his office says access will now be handled case-by-case.  

So, this isn’t shutting down scrutiny, it’s changing where and how it happens. 

And this all comes after a tough stretch — poor polling, speculation about his leadership, and that caucus confidence vote he called himself and won. That’s not someone avoiding pressure internally. 

The criticism, especially from parts of the media, is that he’s ducking hard questions.  

But here’s where I land: no politician is contractually obliged to turn up to the same interviewer every single week if they think it’s a stitch-up rather than a fair contest. 

We’ve seen this before. Jacinda Ardern stopped going on Mike Hosking’s show. David Seymour won’t go on RNZ. Politicians will pick their platforms. Always have and guess what, always will.  

And in a media landscape that’s now radio, TV, podcasts, digital — locking yourself into one weekly slot isn’t necessarily smart politics anyway. 

Now, yes — the media’s role in holding power to account is critical. No arguments there. But accountability doesn’t equal entitlement to a guaranteed booking. 

If Luxon stopped doing all interviews, that’s a problem. But he hasn’t. 

This is a recalibration. A tactical move. 

I just don’t want him to pretend it’s anything else. 

I want him to be straight.  

He doesn’t want to go on the show, he doesn’t want to get carved up, he doesn't feel it good for him. 

Why should he have to sit there knowing someone is trying to get a gotcha moment? 

Rather than giving us, the people of New Zealand, a well-balanced interview on the way the country is.  

That’s what I want to see.

Well, well, well… here we go again 

The theatre, the pressure, the whispers, the leaks — and then bang — Christopher Luxon walks into caucus and says, “righto, let’s settle this.” 

Yesterday, we asked for exactly that, didn’t we?  

I said on this show, I wanted to see a bit of steel.  

A bit of fight. Not the polished corporate lines, not the media training — I wanted to see a Prime Minister Christopher Luxon look like he was in charge.  

And to his credit, that’s exactly what he did. He forced the issue. He didn’t let it drift. He didn’t let the knives keep circling in the dark. 

Because just think about the significance of this for a second.  

This is the first time a sitting Prime Minister has actually asked for a confidence vote.  

First time ever and that matters. We’ve seen pressure like this before — opposition leaders, sure — but not from the top job.  

Not like this. In the past, leaders like Geoffrey Palmer and Mike Moore, or Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley, they were told they didn’t have the numbers. The writing was on the wall.  

But they never forced the room to prove it. Luxon did.  

He walked in and said, “look me in the eye — am I your leader or not?” 

And here’s the follow-up question, no one’s really asking yet. What happens if the next poll drops…  and it’s worse?  

And the one after that… worse again?  

Does this become the playbook now?  

Every time the numbers dip, do we march back into caucus and demand another vote? Because that’s not strength — that’s instability dressed up as decisiveness. 

And we’ll never know the numbers. Three-hour meeting, by all accounts.  

Plenty of MPs getting up, speaking, backing him, positive vibes — that’s the line we’re getting fed.  

And in the end, he’s still standing. He’s still the Prime Minister. So on paper, it’s a win. 

But — and there’s always a but — what kind of win is it? 

Because afterwards, when he walked out to face the media, it wasn’t the big united front we expected. No wall of senior ministers behind him showing overwhelming strength.  

It was just him… and Nicola Willis.  

And I’ve got to be honest — and I know people roll their eyes when I say this — but I watch body language.  

She didn’t look comfortable. She didn’t look like someone who’d just come out of a rock-solid show of unity. It felt… off. 

Now maybe I’m reading too much into it. Maybe that’s just the moment. But politics is theatre, and that moment told a story. 

So where does that leave us this morning? 

Is this the reset Luxon needed — the line in the sand, the moment he takes control and says “enough”? Or is this just round one of a longer fight that’s still bubbling away under the surface? 

Because forcing the vote is bold. No question. But bold only works if it actually shuts things down. 

Did it, or did it just expose how close this really is?

Well, here we go again — this is when the doors are shut, the caucus is in the room, and this is the moment. 

This is where you find out whether a Prime Minister is actually in charge… or just borrowing the label. 

Because over the last 24 to 48 hours, this hasn’t just been a bit of background noise or media speculation — this has been a full-blown leak culture inside the National Party.  

And now, thanks to Mike Hosking, we’ve got names. 

Not whispers. Not “sources say.” Names. 

The famous five. 

Barbara Kuriger. Andrew Bayley. Sam Uffindell. Tim van de Molen. Joseph Mooney. 

Five MPs allegedly talking to the media.  

If Mike Hosking is naming these names you can bet he's on the money, I'm prepared to lose my job on that.  

Five MPs prepared to undermine their own leader publicly — or at the very least, privately with the full knowledge it would become public. 

And now the question isn’t whether it’s happening. 

The question is: what does Luxon do about it? 

Because this is the test. This is leadership 101. 

You cannot run a government — let alone win an election year — if your own team is briefing against you. It’s poisonous. 

It eats away at authority, it destroys discipline, and it tells the public one thing loud and clear: they don’t believe in their own boss. 

So what are the options? 

Does he go soft? Quiet word in their ear, slap on the wrist, “let’s all move on”? 

Or does he go hard? 

Because let’s be very clear — Prime Ministers have power.  

They control rankings, portfolios, future careers.  

If you want to send a message, you can send one quickly. 

And then there’s another layer to this — because now we’re hearing that Chris Bishop may also be linked in some way. 

Now if that’s even remotely true, that’s not just a backbencher issue anymore — that’s senior leadership territory. That changes the stakes completely. 

Is it time for Luxon to clean house?  

He can’t get rid of them, you know he can’t.  

So do you make an example of one or two? Do you reshuffle, demote, strip responsibilities? 

Or do you risk looking weak by trying to keep everyone happy? 

Because here’s the reality — unity isn’t built by pretending problems don’t exist. It’s built by dealing with them. 

And if Luxon walks out of that caucus today without asserting control, without drawing a line… 

Then the story won’t be about five MPs leaking like a sieve.  

The story will be that the Prime Minister knew — and did nothing. 

And once that perception sets in? 

Good luck with trying to do anything come the end of the year.

It’s between what we say we want, and what we’re actually prepared to do to pay for. 

Because right now, the numbers are starting to bite. 

Treasury is warning—loudly—that we are heading into a future where fewer workers supporting more retirees. We know that - it’s fact. 

And now, Inland Revenue is backing that up, saying quite clearly: if we don’t change course, the books don’t stack up. Debt will grow. Pressure will build. Something will have to give. 

And here’s the uncomfortable truth—there are only two levers you can pull. 

You either spend less… or you tax more.  

Now look around.  

We’ve got around 165,000 people on an unemployment benefit. 

We’ve come through COVID with a massive debt hangover.  

Infrastructure costs are blowing out. Health, pensions, everything—up, up, up. 

So I’ll ask the obvious question: are we really going to save our way out of this? 

I don’t think so. 

And that’s why this conversation that politicians keep avoiding—we need to have it properly. 

Because Inland Revenue has already laid it out.  

They say GST should go up. Now think about that for a minute and don’t let it shock you too much. 

They say capital gains should be looked at. They say the system needs to be more flexible so governments can pull in more revenue when they need it – like now. 

And whether we like it or not… they’re probably right. 

Let’s take GST.  

We are at 15% in New Zealand.  

Now compare that to Europe—where consumption taxes are often higher.  

The United Kingdom runs a VAT of 20%. Germany? 19%. France? 20%.  

The Nordic countries—Denmark, Sweden—around 25%. 

So, the idea of moving GST from 15% to 17% or 17.5% here—it’s not radical internationally.  

It’s actually pretty modest. 

Yes, it hurts and it hurts everyone. But it’s simple. It’s efficient.  

And if you pair it with targeted support—cash transfers or tax relief—for low-income earners, you can soften the blow where it matters most. 

Then there’s the old capital gains tax. 

Nobody wants to talk about the horrible old capital gains tax. 

And I know—people hate hearing it. But Inland Revenue is blunt: not taxing capital gains creates distortions. It lets people shift income into areas that aren’t taxed, and that weakens the system. 

So why not be surgical about it? 

You don’t touch the family home. We don’t want to hit ordinary Kiwis.  

But if you’re dealing in assets—property, investments—worth over $2 million, $2.5 million… then yes, maybe you should be paying capital gains tax. 

Because here’s the reality—we’re in a hole. 

And when you’re in a hole, you don’t get out by pretending everything’s fine. 

Some people have done extremely well, even through COVID, even through recession. Meanwhile, others are barely hanging on. 

So yes—maybe company tax edge up. Maybe high-end capital gains are taxed.  

Maybe GST nudges higher. 

None of it is popular. 

But this is the point—there is no pain-free option anymore. 

The real question is: are we prepared to take a bit of pain now, and alot of us have had that pain… to avoid a much bigger one later? 

It’s coming, we can’t afford it, and we can’t get our spending down.

Government is proposing to expand the role of community pharmacists, allowing them to assess patients and provide funded treatment for common conditions like infections, head lice, and minor illnesses.

The move aims to make healthcare faster, cheaper, and more accessible while easing pressure on GPs.

Nick speaks to co-founder/spokesperson for the Independent Community Pharmacy Group Clive Cannons. Cannon's also runs his own pharmacy Clive’s Chemist in Wainuiomata.

Cannon's shares his insight onto the move - which his pharmacy has been trialling for the last few years.

Businesses are feeling the ripple effect, especially in hospitality, where suppliers are adding surcharges to cover higher transport and production costs.

Popular Wellington café, Smith the Grocer, is now considering introducing its own fuel surcharge as expenses like meat, milk, and deliveries increase. 

Nick speaks to co-owner Kirsten Saunders on the subject - where do they draw the line? How are they coping at the moment with high costs?

Fuel prices are starting to quietly creep into everything… and I mean everything we do. 

We always talk about it when we fill up the car — that’s the obvious one.  

But what we’re starting to see now is the next layer of it… the ripple effect. 

And it’s hitting hospitality, right where you notice it most — in your wallet, when you go out for a coffee or a bite to eat. 

There’s a really interesting story out today from Radio New Zealand about a well-known Wellington spot, Smith the Grocer, down in the Old Bank Arcade. Been there or a long time, very successful, very well run cafe.  

They’re not doing it yet — but they’re seriously considering adding a fuel surcharge to their prices. 

And here’s why. 

Their suppliers are already doing it to them. 

One meat supplier has slapped on a 4 percent increase across the board.  

Another is looking at about 5 percent temporarily. Eggs going up. Delivery costs going up. It all stacks up. 

And when you look at the numbers, you can see why.  

According to the fuel app Gaspy, 91 petrol is sitting around $3.48 a litre, diesel closer to $3.89.  

These are real costs, and the flow is going right through the system — from the truck, to the supplier, to the café, and eventually… to you. 

Now the café owner says they’d rather not do it — margins are already tight — but when everything goes up at once, they’ve got two choices: absorb it… or pass it on. 

So here’s the question I’ve been thinking about. 

If you walked into your local café tomorrow… and there was a 5 percent surcharge on the bill — not hidden, not sneaky, just clearly there because of fuel costs — would you pay it? 

Or would you just walk out and go somewhere else? 

Because I’ll be honest with you — I already do this in my own head. Every time before I start the show I go to 2 places to get my coffee 

There are two coffee spots near me. One’s five bucks. The other one — the one I actually like — is $6.30. And every time I go there, I think, “why am I paying more?”… but I still do it. Why because I like the place and I think it’s better there.  

So are we actually price sensitive… or are we habit sensitive? 

If that surcharge becomes the norm — because let’s be honest, this isn’t going away anytime soon — do we just accept it? 

Or does it start changing where we go, what we buy, and how often we go out? 

That’s where it gets really interesting.

Now before anyone jumps on the phone — yes, I know what’s happened up north.  

Yes, I know what happened with the cyclone and it caused real damage.  

Flooding across parts of Northland, the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay. Yes I know that.  

States of emergency declared. Power outages. Evacuations. Roads closed. People genuinely affected. Up north. 

Those are the facts and they matter. 

But here’s the bigger picture we’re being told now: New Zealand is entering what experts are calling a more defined “cyclone season.”  

This isn’t just a one-off. We’ve already had multiple major weather events in 2026 — storms earlier this year that caused deaths and serious flooding.  

Scientists are warning that while cyclones may not come more often, they could be more intense, last longer, and hit harder. 

So yes — the risk is real. 

But here’s the question I can’t shake this morning: are we starting to jump too quickly into full shutdown mode every time a system rolls through? 

Because we know this is the time of year. We know we sit in a part of the world where these systems track down. This is not new anymore — this is becoming part of the pattern. 

And yet — what are we seeing? 

Batten down the hatches. Cancel plans. Stay home. Prepare for the worst. 

Now again — authorities will say that’s exactly the point.  

Early warnings save lives. And they’re right.  

Since events like Cyclone Gabrielle, behaviour has changed.  

People take warnings seriously. Emergency management acts earlier. 

And in many cases that's the preparedness that we want and absolutely prevents tragedy.  

That’s a good thing. 

But is there a tipping point? 

Because when every weather system is treated like it could be catastrophic, something else starts to happen.  

People stop going out. Businesses take a hit. Events lose momentum. And slowly, quietly, the economy feels it.  

And it starts to feel like it’s clickbait for media. It starts to feel like a build up days before. 

And here’s where it gets tricky — because you don’t want complacency.  

You don’t want people ignoring warnings when a genuinely dangerous system is coming. 

But you also don’t want a country that freezes every time the forecast turns rough. 

We’ve seen the impacts — infrastructure under pressure, insurance costs rising, councils facing huge bills to build resilience.  

All of that is real, and all of that needs serious long-term thinking. 

But day-to-day? 

Are we getting the balance right?  

Or are we starting to default to worst-case scenario thinking every time will be a catastrophe — just in case? 

Because if this is the new normal… if this really is a “cyclone season” we’re going to live with… 

Then the way we respond to it matters just as much as the weather itself. 

So, here’s the question this morning — have we found the right balance between caution and overreaction? 

Or are we, bit by bit, becoming a country that shuts down too easily? 

Should we be more cautious of a boy who cried wolf situation in Wellington? Because that’s the part that really scares me. 

Do we overreact too quickly?
