The latest poll from the Taxpayer Union and Curia has National at 28.4% - the lowest for the party since it formed Government in 2023.

I watched that stand-up from the Prime Minister and I’ve got to be honest with you — I walked away feeling uneasy. 

Not because I expect a New Zealand Prime Minister to be a Middle East historian.  

We’re a small country. Our politics is usually about rates, roads, schools, the price of butter. I get that. 

But when the world tips into crisis —when the United States and Israel launch strikes on Iran— that’s not a domestic moment. That's what I call an international flashpoint.  

That’s oil prices, security alliances, global instability, the rules-based order we rely on as a small trading nation. 

And I’m sorry, that performance didn’t fill me with confidence. 

On Sunday, Christopher Luxon and Winston Peters said the Government “acknowledged” the US and Israeli action, but wouldn’t say whether New Zealand supported it.  

On Monday morning, pressed to explain what “acknowledge” actually meant, the Prime Minister struggled to articulate it.  

He repeated that the Iranian regime is “evil” —and many would agree, given its repression at home and behaviour abroad— but that wasn’t really the question. 

The question is: where does New Zealand stand? 

Under international law, military intervention has a high bar.  

Pre-emptive self-defence is defined narrowly under the century-old Caroline doctrine – the threat must be “instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means and no moment for deliberation.”  

Luxon said he hadn’t seen intelligence, hadn’t asked for any beyond regular briefings, and those matters were “to be determined”.

That’s the moment I thought: hang on. 

You don’t have to reveal classified material, but you do have to look like you’re in command.  

Former Foreign and Defence Minister Phil Goff spoke to Ryan Bridge this morning, questioning why the Government hadn’t already ruled the Iranian Regime a terrorist organization.  

You do have to project calm authority. You do have to explain the principles guiding the country. 

Instead, it felt uncomfortable. Out of his depth. Out of his comfort zone. 

And maybe that’s the brutal truth of politics – you don’t get to choose when the world tests you. You don’t get to say, “this isn’t my portfolio".  

If you’re Prime Minister, every crisis is your crisis. 

So here’s the question I want to put to you tonight: 

Did you feel confident watching Christopher Luxon handle that moment? 

Did you feel like he was in control? Like he understood the stakes? Like he knew exactly where New Zealand sits in a conflict like this? 

Or did you, like me, feel it was one of the weakest stand-ups you’ve seen from a Prime Minister in a long time? 

Because in times of international tension, tone matters. Clarity matters. Leadership under pressure matters.

Mayor Andrew Little's told Newstalk ZB ratepayers have been overcharged by about 10 dollars each - for the Greater Wellington Regional Council levy. He says it'll be rectified in the next bill.

Last month, it was revealed the council had undercharged ratepayers by almost 3.5 million dollars for its sludge levy. Construction costs soared in building the city’s first sludge minimisation plant, meaning households needed to fork out between 3 dollars and 100 dollars each, with an average undercharge of 40 dollars per levy-payer.

Speaking to Wellington Mornings with Nick Mills, Little this morning defended the council's Chief Financial Officer Andrea Reeves, insisting she's still doing a great job.

He says she recognises the problem and has independent people coming in and telling her what has led to the mistakes.

Little says he's revealed this second blunder out of full transparency. "Part of [being mayor] it is about changing the culture of council, and getting those things ironed out," he says.

"But also when things do go wrong, let's just step up and say it, and fix it, and trying to do that." Reeves previously apologised for the sludge levy error, saying to prevent this happening again, stronger internal controls and review steps had been put in place.

The Greater Wellington levy funds regional services like biosecurity, flood protection and regional transport. The Wellington City Council is apologising for the second accounting error, but says it means ratepayers will pay less than previously thought. It says it's confident all rates assessments are now correct.

This is despite the law, which was pushed by the Act Party during coalition talks, being less than a month old, and having been passed into law with votes from both National and NZ First.

Speaking to Wellington Mornings with Nick Mills on Newstalk ZB, Willis said National had not “come up with what our party position will be after the election”.

“We haven’t ruled out repealing it either. We haven’t taken a position yet, but it’s not impossible that we would go to the campaign trail saying, ‘yes, we met our coalition commitment, we supported that into law, but actually we agree with the concerns of some people, it hasn’t operated as we’d hoped and we want to repeal it’.

“We haven’t come to a position yet, but we haven’t ruled it out.”

NZ First leader Winston Peters shocked the coalition last week when he said his party would campaign on repealing the law it had just helped to pass.

His position is that the coalition obliged his party to pass the law, but his party is free to repeal it in the next Parliament.

Willis said she was “comfortable” with this position.

“They joined the Cabinet, they used their votes to ensure it is passed into law – they did their bit,” Willis said.

Willis is not the only National MP to float repealing the law.

Last week, when her colleague Chris Bishop was asked what the party was thinking, he replied, “you’ll see our policy going into the election”.

“I’m not going to give you a commitment on National policy,” he said.

All three opposition parties say they will repeal the law if they have the numbers next term. Labour MP Duncan Webb has even submitted a member’s bill to the ballot which, if drawn, would give NZ First the opportunity to repeal the law this term of parliament.

Peters, however, described this as game-playing and said he would not be supporting the effort.

Act leader David Seymour attacked Peters’ about-turn on the law, saying it looked as though Peters was gearing up to join another Labour-led coalition, something Peters has said he would not do while Chris Hipkins was leader of the party.

The Regulatory Standards Act is designed to improve the quality of government regulation by establishing a set of principles for what constitutes “good regulation”.

Part of the controversy surrounding the law is the fact these principles are closely aligned to Act’s political worldview and do not constitute more universally recognised principles of good regulation.

The act is also controversial for the creation of a regulations board that acts as an assessor of compliance against these principles, although power to act on what the board says ultimately still rests with ministers and Parliament.

During Question Time, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was pressed on whether the coalition government is working on a new law to prevent people from sleeping in our downtown city centres.

Luxon batted it away in the House —wouldn’t touch it. But later, minister for Auckland Simeon Brown went further, and his comments should make Wellington sit up and listen.

Brown acknowledged the obvious: homelessness is just as serious in Auckland as it is here —maybe worse—but it’s not a competition.

He confirmed the Government is looking at ways to prevent rough sleeping in CBDs and provide accommodation options for those who need it.

That’s the combo we’ve been missing: expectation and support. Not just “move them on,” but “give them somewhere better to go.”

Otherwise, they will just keep coming back.

And let me be very clear— in my view, this is exactly what Wellington needs right now. Not next year. Not after a working group. Now.

Because, friends… this is not just about tidying up the shop window of our city — though that matters —it’s about the people themselves. Nobody benefits from sleeping outside convenience stores 24/7. It’s unsafe. It’s unhealthy. And frankly, it is not the dignity any New Zealander deserves.

I’ve said many times on this programme: I have never personally witnessed a homeless person assaulting anyone. But that doesn’t mean the current situation is working. It doesn’t feel good.

 It doesn’t feel safe. It keeps people away from our CBD, and it drags down businesses already on their knees.

And if we’re serious about making Wellington vibrant again — if we want people back in town, shopping, eating, working — then we’ve got to confront the reality in front of our eyes.

National MP Ryan Hamilton is even floating a member’s bill that would give police powers to move people on from public places. Labour, of course, called it “banning homelessness.”

Heated scenes in Parliament followed. Luxon insists nothing has been discussed at Cabinet — but the conversation alone tells you how serious this has become.

Meanwhile, homelessness here in Wellington has surged —up 24 percent according to The Post. That should shock all of us. That’s the direction of travel under the current system — more people on the streets, fewer tools to intervene.

Yes, there are legitimate questions about rights and freedoms. Community Law rightly points out that people have the right to move and live where they choose. But we already allow police to act on trespass, public nuisance, disorder… the law already intervenes when things get unsafe. The issue here is balance — helping, not punishing — and creating a better alternative so no one has to sleep rough in the first place.

Simeon Brown says Auckland is talking to its council. Well — so should we. If Auckland can start planning, why can’t Wellington? We cannot keep waiting, hoping it fixes itself.

This government stepping up to create real tools — and more importantly, real accommodation — is exactly what Wellington needs. Not later. Now.

What a ride, and what a mess. And, let’s be honest, what a disappointment.

From the very beginning, Tory framed her leadership through a lens of identity – “poor me, give me a break, I’m a woman, and I’m new.” 

That became her shield, her excuse, and, in many ways, the story of her mayoralty.

When she campaigned, it was all about team building, collaboration, bringing the city together behind a shared vision. It sounded good. It sounded hopeful. 

But in reality? It never happened.

She surrounded herself with sycophants - people who told her what she wanted to hear, not what she needed to hear.

Around the council table, she isolated herself, cut off critics, and created a bunker mentality. That’s fatal for a city that needed leadership more than ever.

Now to be fair, and I want to be fair, Tory didn’t have an easy ride. 

She came in at the worst possible time: cost-of-living pressures, broken pipes, crumbling infrastructure, council debt spiralling out of control.

Whoever wore the chain was going to struggle. But that doesn’t excuse the way she handled it.

Time and again, she ran from the hard stuff.

She ducked responsibility. She even abandoned her monthly commitment on Newstalk ZB's Wellington Mornings – not because she lacked the time, but because she was advised not to face the heat.

That’s not leadership. That’s avoidance.

Wellington paid the price. Instead of a steady hand, we got chaos. 

Instead of strong decision-making, we got excuses. Instead of a mayor who could rally councillors and the public, we got someone who shrank from scrutiny.

And then, in her final council speech on Wednesday , we got the encore: the blame game.

Whanau used her last act in office to highlight the abuse she’s faced – and yes, some of it was vile, unacceptable, and personal.

She cited lewd rumours, online harassment, and sexist behaviour from councillors like Ray Chung.  She demanded change to fix what she called a toxic council culture.

"To those who created those challenges, thank you. Whether it was members around this very table feeding defamatory rumours to the media, whether it was some media reporting on defamatory rumours as fact, whether it was better Wellington harassing our elected members, or members of Vision for Wellington lobbying government for intervention, even though they were supposedly apolitical," Whanau said.

"Whether it's previous mayors or elected members who criticised this council for high rates, even though it was their decisions and underinvestment who caused them, leaving us to pick up the bill.” She said.

Fair enough. Abuse and misogyny in politics must be called out.

No one should face that.

But here’s the thing: while Tory was naming names and pointing fingers, Wellington was still left with broken pipes, spiralling rates, and a city in crisis. Cycleways in places we did not want or need, that’s the part that never got fixed.

She tried. She gave it a go.

But giving it a go isn’t enough when you’re in charge of a capital city. We needed toughness, vision, competence. We got hype, we got controversy, and we got a legacy that will be remembered for what it didn’t deliver.

So today, Wellington turns the page.

Tory Whanau came, she stumbled, and she left. The “accidental mayor” is no longer.

And the question now is simple: who’s going to pick up the pieces and finally give this city the leadership it’s been crying out for?

There's no doubt that she, and other female politicians are dealing with an unjust abuse. But she still had to power through and she had to be a leader.

And I don't think she did that successfully.

I wish Tory Whanau all the best, I enjoyed our conversations but I am disappointed she took advice not to communicate to our city.

Lindsay McKenzie has ended his six month stint after being brought in by the Government last year to be its eyes and ears as the council failed to deliver a long-term plan.  

His final report suggests the capital is facing the same problems as the rest of the country but is steadily progressing. 

McKenzie says the council has effectively solved the problems that were the catalyst for the Ministerial intervention, and the level of cooperation and consideration for each other's views and preferences has increased. 

When it comes to Whanau’s leadership, he told Nick Mills that it’s a tough ask for somebody to come into a mayoral role with no local government experience, especially in the capital city, and it showed.

The The 28th Cello Champions Charity Luncheon was held on Friday ahead of the event, with a stellar line up of former All Blacks including Frank Bunce and Josh Kronfeld. 

Frank Bunce played 69 All Black games - including 55 tests - between 1992 and 1997, while Josh Kronfeld played 56 All Blacks games - including 54 tests - between 1995 and 2000.

Bluebridge's new ferry Livia has arrived in the capital - the sister ship to the existing Connemara vessel already operated by Bluebridge. 

The ship, built in 2008, was previously operated by a ferry line in Europe, but has since had a fresh lick of paint and is currently undergoing internal renovations ahead of its first voyage across the Cook Strait in about two weeks.
