The ancient artworks were plundered in the 19th century and are currently on display in German museums. Most of the artefacts were looted by British forces during a military expedition to the kingdom, in what is now Nigeria, in 1897. Most European former colonial powers have begun a process in recent years of considering the return of looted artefacts to the former colonies, especially in Africa. In March, the University of Aberdeen in Scotland agreed to return a Benin Bronze sculpture to Nigeria, saying it was acquired by British soldiers in 1897 in "reprehensible circumstances." Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City to house the looted artefacts after they are returned. 90% of Africa's cultural heritage currently lies outside the continent. Pressure has mounted on former colonial powers to return all artwork to their places of origin.

Nominees for the 26th edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA)have been announced.

The organisers of the event the Recording industry of South Africa (RISA) announced this month that the annual SAMA will stage its 26th edition over five nights, from August 3-7.

In accordance with the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown and social distancing norms, the party has moved from the country's North West province's Sun City Superbowl to be streamed live.

Under the theme: #ForThaKultcha, five adrenaline filled yet bite-size 30 minute episodes with subthemes #ForThaRoots, #ForThaSoul, #ForThaStreets, #ForThaCraft culminating in #ForThaClub which will be a 45 minutes-long grand finale, will present a unique SAMA26 virtual experience.

Marking a seismic shift in local music, a slew of new artists are claiming their place on the SAMA nominations list, while a few old favourites make a return.

Prince Kaybee, already with four nods in the bag from the Record of the Year (ROTY) and Music Video of the Year (MVOTY) categories, extended his lead with five more.

The dance music DJ is in the running for the coveted Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Produced Album, Best Dance Album for Re Mmino and Best Collaboration for Fetch Your Life featuring Msaki.

His total tally for SAMA26 stands at nine, making him the most nominated this year.
