Currently Meals on Wheels Community Services operates via more than 700 service points throughout the country. In towns and cities these branches usually comprise well established kitchens. In rural areas and squatter settlements, we utilise fully fitted “container kitchens.” At this time, we are commissioning one new container kitchen every two months. While we are very proud of the fact that we have now reached a service level in excess of 29 million meals per annum, we need to at least double this over the next year.

Launched on 14th December 2012, the primary objective of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation is to save lives by putting an end to drowning.

Its missions are to raise public awareness about the dangers of water, teach children preventive measures, and teach them to swim.

The World Health Organization estimated that 360,000 people drowned worldwide in 2015(*).
More than 40 fatalities every hour
More than half the victims are under the age of 25
Children under the age of 5 are the most affected

When a drowning is non-fatal, often the victim is left with severe aftereffects, in particular neurological.

A number of “Learn to Swim” and “Water Safety” programmes have been implemented around the world in order to fight against this scourge.

The Foundation is equally involved in communicating the values of sport such as discipline, respect for oneself and for others, determination and teamwork. The “Sport & Education” program believes that sport is a tool that contributes to the well-being and the development of children.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Autism are interchangeable terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. People with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. Autism occurs on a spectrum, which means that while all people with autism share the same difficulties, the condition affects each person differently. Some people are severely affected and others can function independently within society. There are three core difficulties of autism which are often referred to as the triad of impairment.

Social interaction is challenging because people with autism struggle to understand the emotions and feelings. As a result, social behaviour, such as taking part in conversations, recognizing and understanding emotions, as well as the use of eye contact, body language, gestures and facial expressions are difficult
Communication difficulties include limitations in understanding and speaking/expressing oneself
Imagination within autism is usually restricted. As a result, people with autism have a preference for routine and often display repetitive behaviours (like spinning objects all the time). Individuals with autism may struggle with changes to their environment or any other form of lifestyle changes.
Sensory issues are also often evident in many individuals with autism. This means the person struggles to process senses such as touch, smell, sight, sound, taste, and even movement. This often impedes everyday functioning (e.g. can’t tolerate the noise of the toilet flushing, or unable to tolerate certain food).

DISCOVERY EXCELLENCE AWARD 2018 WINNER

The SABR won the Discovery Excellence Award 2018 for our SOStainer Mobile Container Clinic Project, an innovative, holistic approach to promoting and facilitating best practice in saving the lives of newborn, premature or very-low-birth-weight infants, with far-reaching implications for the well-being of children and socio-economic development.

SUSTAINABLE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT BEGINS HERE

Since its inception in 2003, the work of the SABR has been focused on premature babies especially and the value that breastfeeding and donated breastmilk (DBM) contribute towards reducing infant mortality and morbidity at the start of the Human Development Chain. However, the health of an infant cannot be viewed in isolation. It is important to consider the broader health services that need to be made available to pregnant women and their children under five.

Since 2015, therefore, we began to expand our mandate to embrace a life-cycle approach to infant health and survival, looking at breastfeeding in the context of early childhood development and not only as a clinical solution to premature morbidity and mortality at hospital level. Ante-natal health, HIV prevention and treatment, immunisation, family planning and breastfeeding support are some of the corner-stones that support better health outcomes for children once they leave hospital after birth and return to their communities.

The SABR has 15 years’ experience:

Pioneering a human milk-banking model in South Africa;
Developing breastmilk pasteurisers to minimise pathogens and maximise nutrition in local African conditions;
Developing a sustainable and replicable, cost-recovery business model for non-profit, human milk banking;
Developing essential systems for remote monitoring and tracking of DBM supplies using customised IT technology

In an ongoing effort to better address South Africa’s 90-90-90* goals, Shout-it-Now continues to innovate its services to meet the changing needs of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. For years that meant scaling up an efficient community-based testing service that engaged masses of people to learn their HIV status. With many diagnosed patients not accessing care, the current challenge is to ensure that they are initiated onto ART and continue to adhere to their medication. Shout-it-Now’s new Test and Treat was designed to meet these challenges.

*UNAIDS has established the following three treatment goals as critical to eliminating AIDS: By 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status; 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy; 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression.

We create educational movie tutorials in isiZulu which we share at mobile cinemas which we set up in creches, schools, clinics and community halls. We also run a permanent cinema venue in Hammarsdale where we offer information on many subjects. In addition to our education programs we run a few social upliftment projects such as our fine arts program, Gogo's groups, feeding scheme's and clinic.
We are currently launching our HIV and Leadership Education program for youths from Grade 7 to Matric.

WHO WE ARE
Wildfires are a part of life in the Western Cape and every fire season, agencies in the Cape Peninsula, the Overberg, the Cape Winelands and as far afield as the Cedarberg respond to thousands of fires, stretching resources to the limit.

The Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), a group of some 250 volunteer wildland firefighters, deploy from four fire bases – Newlands, Jonkershoek, South Peninsula and Grabouw – to provide much-needed support to the likes of CapeNature, Table Mountain National Park, Overberg District Municipality and Winelands District Municipality, fighting some of the most destructive wildfires Cape Town and the Western Cape have experienced.

With the exception of a full-time employed general manager, the VWS is staffed, run and managed by committed people who all have day jobs. Many of the VWS’ deployments are at night, providing welcome relief for day-time fire crews, but once a VWS crew comes off the line, it’s back to base, home for a shower and maybe an hour or so of sleep, before heading for a full day at work or in the lecture hall.

For the VWS to do its work, it needs money, which makes fund-raising a critical focus when its members are off the line. A registered non-profit organisation, the VWS relies on the support of the communities it serves, to be able to do what it does best: fight wildland fires.

High up in the Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains that serrate the
border between South Africa and Lesotho is a last remnant population of Bearded Vultures.
With less than 400 birds left in the wild, the species is now listed as critically endangered
and active conservation measures need to be implemented in order to ensure their survival.
In recent history the population has suffered more than a 30% decline and are threatened by
multiple factors. They collide with, or get electrocuted by power-lines. They get poisoned
when ingesting poisoned bait that is put out by farmers for jackal. Their body parts are also
used in the traditional muthi industry and, the latest threat looming is the proposal of wind
farms in the high mountain areas of Lesotho. These massive turbines, while providing a
quick and renewable form of energy, have proved lethal to flying birds utilizing the same
wind corridors.

RADA has secured land situated on the outskirts of Johannesburg whereby plans are being finalised for the creation of the first RADA in-house facility.

In December 2013, Zelda la Grange, late former President Nelson Mandela's trusted assistant, presented philanthropist and 'Arts Angel', Carolyn Steyn, with a challenge: knit, sew or crochet 67 blankets! These blankets would then be distributed to those in need on Mandela Day.

Mandela Day is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on the 18th July, Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in 2009.

Carolyn gladly accepted Zelda's challenge but soon realised that she wouldn't be able to achieve it alone.

She called on her friends for help and developed a Facebook group called "67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day". In just days, hundreds of people from around the world had pledged to knit a blanket for Nelson Mandela Day.

Since then, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has transformed into what some are calling a "movement" - a movement that has captured the attention of many South African and international celebrities as well as corporates and "KnitWits for Madiba" in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Cyprus, London, the US and India.

In its short history, the campaign has realized some important milestones. After just nine months, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day won CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR at the South African of the Year Awards in October 2014. On April 21, 2015, to mark 21 years of democracy in South Africa 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day smashed the Guinness World Record for the "The Largest Crochet Blanket in the World" measuring 3,377 square meters at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

On August 7, 2015 Carolyn Steyn signed an MOU with National Commisioner, Zach Modise, formalising a partnership between 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and the Department of Correctional Services whereby every prison in South Africa will have the initiative introduced as part of their curriculum. The partnership is born from the shared belief that every person can change.

Since 1990, Sparrow Schools Educational Trust has developed into a dynamic and multi-faceted non-government organisation. The early years of Sparrow Schools were focused on bringing accredited schooling to cognitively disabled and disadvantaged youth. Since then, it has established and expanded organisational structures to address a wider range of needs found in the current South African environment — this includes the the creation of Sparrow FET College in 2010.

The College adopts a theory, practice and real-world application approach to skills development. In the classroom, learners cover theoretical curriculum content in a simulated workplace environment through which theoretical and practical skills are taught and applied. Learners then carry these skills to their industry placement.

Sparrow FET College and the industry work together to provide learners with internships during which they are fully supported, comprehensively trained, and prepared for future employment. The process starts with an assessment by a registered psychometrist. After this, a job coach is tasked with tracking each learner’s progress during their placement. Job coaches also monitor the learner’s career once they are fully employed, enabling us to assure industries that learners will become trustworthy employees. 16 Days of Activism.

Following the success of its Adoption Community Engagement Programme the National Adoption Coalition of South Africa, with the support of the Swedish Foundation for Children Without Parental Care, decided to expand it into a more holistic child protection programme with broad global relevance. The programme has been developed in partnership with Dee Blackie (BOBI), a consultant to NACSA on special projects including all strategy and change management initiatives.

The objective of this programme is to improve the gate-keeping functions of child protection systems in South Africa, Zambia and Lesotho initially, and later to a far broader global audience, ensuring that children without adequate family care or at risk of being abandoned have their rights fulfilled.

Project goals:
To develop a user friendly global community engagement programme that can be used for capacity building of stakeholders within the child protection system and community at large.
To strengthen the knowledge, attitudes and skills of duty bearers to apply a legally secure care-taking system for children without parental care or at risk.

Amarula Cream Liqueur has launched its ‘Name Them, Save Them’ campaign in an effort to give a name to every surviving African elephant in the wild.

‘Name Them, Save Them’ started in October 2016 when Amarula launched the campaign with a web-episode shot in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, which directs viewers to a virtual digital Savannah.

This allowed an international audience to visit the digital African Savannah where they could design and name a virtual African elephant. Participants could then share their named elephant with friends and family as a means of raising awareness.

The latest wildlife census information puts the number of African elephants living in the wild at around 400 000, a decline from just a decade ago. In April, Amarula will move on to the next phase of its ‘Name Them, Save Them’ campaign.

In phase two, the digitalise pachyderms, created by the Amarula’s online audience are brought to life by putting a named elephant and information regarding the animal on the labels of 400 000 individualised Amarula bottles - one bottle for each of the earth’s remaining African elephants.

In keeping with Amarula’s approach to marketing and new print technology, Mosaic Technology was used to customise each bottle. 400 000 labels were crafted, using an algorithm which randomly generates images, ensuring that each label is 100% unique. Amarula is the first alcohol brand utilising this Mosaic Technology, launching it to the general trade around the world.

Amarula global general manager, Dino D’Araujo, says, “The future of the African elephant is at a tipping point. Recent data shows that each day – not each month or even each week –around 96 African elephants are killed by poachers for their ivory. The species simply cannot sustain a slaughter on this scale and survive. This fuelled Amarula to intensify its efforts by joining forces with WildlifeDirect, working closely with respected conservationist Dr Paula Kahumbu to save our elephants.”

Amarula intends to maintain the digital African Savannah and its visuals in the future. Amarula will donate $1 to WildlifeDirect for every digital elephant created on the site.

D’Araujo adds, “We have always had a special bond with these magnificent creatures, as the Amarula tree and its fruit contribute enormously to the well-being of the elephant and the very existence of Amarula. We had to come up with something that would personalise the plight of the African elephant in a way that would resonate with the international community, and rally it to the cause. We think ‘Name Them, Save Them’ is the perfect vehicle for this outreach.”

It was the killing of another animal that served as the inspiration for Amarula’s ‘Name Them, Save Them’ programme. In 2015, a hunter in Zimbabwe killed a male African lion that had been given the name Cecil.

By having named the lion, wildlife conservationists had created a persona for the animal allowing the general public to identify with it, and relate to its well-being.

The Amarula bottles carrying the name and information on the digitalised elephants will be available from April onwards, in Global Travel Retail, as well as South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Project Loo was born out of an initiative to change people's lives, as well as grant access to something we all take for granted everyday -
a working toilet.

It all started when Claire visited Deli's home in eMzinyathi, Inanda and understood the limitations of water supply which has a BIG on this particular community, as well as other neighboring ones.

Living with this limited access to water means that things like washing dishes, drinking a glass of water and most importantly flushing a toilet becomes near impossible.

So currently the community uses an unsafe and unhygienic homemade long-drop. The use of this loo can very easily spread to disease and many other ailments. There is also the fear of people falling into these pits at night, which can be fatal.

As South Africa’s first and only hospice dedicated to providing children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions with wholistic care services. Iris House Children’s Hospice provides life-changing support for families in their own homes in the form of community sits, and in the hospice itself where we provide a place in which children are encouraged to reach their full potential however limited that may be. Using play therapy, music therapy, aqua and equine therapy and fun-filled activity days, we aim to bring fun and laughter into the lives of our children.

.Some exciting projects include the creation of a sustainable food garden , which will grow In 2017 as we embark on a joint project with Urban Harvest and sponsored by Checkers. Using are food garden as a model we aim to train and equip 20 parents of special needs children from underprivileged areas to enable them to grow their own vegetables and herbs at home. Other projects improvements to our sensory garden, the training of our therapy horses, care pals, Imagination Station, and the building of our new reception area as well as the construction of our outdoor play area.

The Iris House care team now consists of 21 carers, 17 of which were trained in 2016 alone. In an effort to provide the best quality care to our families, and develop the skills of our carers, we have made sure that 11 of our carers have completed their level one First Aid Course and 5 senior of our senior carers have gone further and completed their level three First Aid Course. Understanding the importance of quality care for all, we have partnered with Frsanterkraal to provide ongoing practical training for 38 students within our hospice setting. Giving them valuable “hands on” experience that will have far reaching positive effects in their communities.

Our community based respite care sessions has always been a core part of what we do at Iris House, These respite care sessions are provided in order relieve a parent or parents for up to four hours in the comfort of their own home.With the growth of our care team, we have been able to expand these services and are now able to care for over 333 individuals and their families in 26 communities, In addition to these important community based respite care sessions Our hospice continues to provide safe and fun respite care sessions to many of our children. Each session is headed by a lead (senior carer) and the creatives lead by a Playmaker. We place emphasis on the ability of the children and not their disability, and thus structure the day around the unique ability of each individual attending the session. This positive approach to caring for children with special needs allow us to provide One2One stimulation, love and care. We are extremely proud of the quality of these sessions and with the addition of our full time registered nurse 2017 will see further improvement in this regard.

At Iris House supporting the family is as important as providing quality care for the child, it is because of this understanding of the unique challenges faced by parents of special needs children that we place emphasis on the wellbeing of the parents. Our parents are very special people and at Iris House we do everything possible to support them. One of the ways in which we do so is by running support groups that create a safe platform that enable parents to share common challenges, forge new friendships, and grow their own support network. These support groups are hosted in Mfuleni, Khayelitsha and the Northern suburbs on a monthly basis, and as another special way to support our amazing parents we have hosted numerous Mom and Dad treats and projects.

Events such as our Easter Egg Hunt, Run.WalknRoll – 5km, and Iris House Ball, help to raise much needed funds to assist us in continuing our work, but also help to create awareness about issues about issues and challenges faced by people with special needs, but more importantly their abilities and potential. These events have brought together over 500 parents and family members of special needs children and young adults, and have been the catalyst for many friendships. Currently hosting end of year Christmas family parties, we continue to bring together these families with festive cheer and of course generous gifts.

MES Johannesburg has been fulfilling the needs of the marginal and destitute communities in and around Johannesburg. They aim to assist the community through a holistic three step approach which is: Intake, intervention and a sustainable exit.

Intake occurs when M.E.S receives referrals for intake by members of the community or by conducting outreaches on the streets, in dilapidated buildings and within the communities where MES operates and once a relationship is established, the clients are referred to the Assessment Centre.

From there M.E.S conducts an intervention process whereby through social services, skills development and youth development programmes the person that came through M.E.S can exit and sustain themselves. MES Johannesburg covers all services to ensure each client will have an exit opportunity with a successful outcome of becoming a sustainable citizen.

Jagersfontein’s Diamonds in the Rough is a self-funded project founded by Lerato Machetela. The group was set up as an initiative which seeks to provide the male youth of Jagersfontein with an alternative lifestyle and platform where they could freely and creatively express themselves and still feel like “real men”. Machetela believes that due to the culturally embedded norm that “real men don’t cry”, men are denied the opportunity to experience and express their pain and humanness in an appropriate manner thus, they ruminate their emotions and later act them out through reactive actions, which are usually detrimental to their wellbeing. What started out as a small project on the dusty roads of Jagersfontein has spiraled into an entertainment project which performs at various events such as MACUFE (Mangaung African Cultural Festival), Bloem Show, International Museums Day, as well as various heritage day celebrations.

The Vrede Foundation is a Non-Profit, Public Benefit Organization [NPO 068/959 // PBO # 930029994] started in Johannesburg, South Africa in October 2008 as a result of Herman’s Story.
Our aim is twofold.

1] To generate awareness amongst Young South Africans (aged 15-29) regarding Cancer.
Young people don’t usually think about Cancer! There is often a pre-conceived idea that Cancer only affects Older People. Young people don’t want to think about “dreaded diseases”. As the number of people affected by Cancer continues to rise, we want to share information about the disease, about how to manage the disease and about how to assist those affected by the disease.

2] To raise funds and provide financial aid to Young South Africans with Cancer who do not have medical aid.
Young people do not want to think about the impact that Cancer can have on their lives or their finances. Often they are just not prepared to deal with the financial aspects that arise if they do require treatment! This puts an unimaginable strain on both them and their families at a time when they are already dealing with a lot.
Recent studies show cancer has become more prevalent in the younger generation over the years; with certain cancers, like testicular cancer and breast cancer, affecting more and more young men and women as early as in their 20’s.

CANCER DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A DEATH SENTENCE. If caught early, it can be treated and beaten. It’s a tough subject to broach – people often whisper “The Big C” and this creates fear and loathing around the topic.

To break this taboo and align our Foundation with a positive and uplifting message, The Vrede Foundation aims to raise cancer awareness amongst the South African youth through music. Music is the cornerstone of The Vrede Foundation’s process and the live music arena in South Africa is providing the stage from which this new message of hope and action can be delivered. At these live music events young South Africans can get information, learn how to be prepared, where to seek counseling, contribute funds to the Foundation’s trust to help their peers and simultaneously HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIME!

Durban born Ramona Kasavan is CEO of a Social Enterprise called Happy Days, an organisation she founded to keep girls in school through the sponsorship of her own brand of sanitary pads; Happy Days. Ramona began her venture in 2013 after reading for her Honours Degree in Brand Leadership and Strategic Marketing. She wrote her final year thesis on the constructs of femininity in sanitary pad advertising which created insights into the lives of young South African women. Born a farm girl in the majestic hills of Inanda, her research inspired her to create a social business that addressed the needs of young women with regards to sanitary pads. The business empowers young women in rural areas about their bodies, menstruation, pads and teenage pregnancy. This idea was the beginning of a now flourishing Non-Profit Organisation. Ramona holds a triple major in Media, Marketing and Communications and an Honours degree in Marketing Strategy. After a glittering career in the national media for 6 years as DJ and Television presenter, Ramona moved from Durban to Johannesburg to launch her startup. After completing her certification in Social Entrepreneurship at The Gordon Institute of Business Science, Ramona has found her place in the world and has set herself on a moral obligation to help 3 Million girls stay in school. The Happy Days Foundation inspires them and helps create safe spaces for them to find comfort and acceptance in themselves and own their confidence. The business provides sanitary pads in rural parts of South Africa and has a direct selling model aimed at unemployed female youths called Pads N Cents. Pads N Cents teaches young women between the ages of 18 and 35 to save, secure and invest in their future through an incubator training that runs for 6 months and equips young South African women with business and entrepreneurial skills in a bid to decrease unemployment levels in the country and encourage them on their own entrepreneurial journey. The ambassadors are then signed on as sales representatives of the Happy Days sanitary pad which makes the pads affordable and accessible in the community. This is Ramona Kasavan’s answer to unemployment levels in South Africa amongst women. In her spare time, Ramona enjoys reading, yoga and travel to different destinations. A self-confessed academic, she believes all women deserve the opportunity to education as this has been her blueprint for success as a female entrepreneur.
