The city park farmers market is underway.
it is a huge farmers market with over 90 vendors this year!

I also speak with Rick Padilla from DDPHE’s (Denver Department of Public Health and Environment) Suicide Prevention Team. He has organized a Youth Summit for teens for May 2nd. He speaks passionately about kid's mental health because he lost his own son to suicide in 2019.

You may not know this but one of the most famous survivors of the titanic is Molly Brown and she lived here in Denver.

Rocky Mtn Natl Park and Timed Entries for 2022

Rocky Mtn National Park has introduced timed entry permits for visitors and is continuing that practice again this year. Starting in May, you can reserve time to enjoy the 107-year-old park.
Why was this necessary? Kyle Patterson is the long-time Public Affairs Director for Rocky Mountain National Park, and she says visitation has increased by 42 percent since 2012. Park officials had to do something to “preserve and protect “for future generations.

Colorado Search and Rescue /Global Down Syndrome Foundation

Jeff Sparhawk is the Executive Director of the Colorado Search and Rescue Association. SARS Teams around Colorado are all volunteer organizations and are looking to get funds from the State legislature to help them carry out their rescues.
As more people move to Colorado, more people get into trouble in the great outdoors and need rescuing. Many of these SARS volunteers put in 1400 dollars of their own money to be able to be a rescuer. Now they need financial rescue themselves.

Michelle Sie Whitten, CEO and Founder of The Global Down Syndrome Foundation in Denver gave us an update.

3-21 is coming up and it is World Down Syndrome Day. Also, we talk about the latest research and how the organization was getting along since the pandemic started.

Checking on the Mental Health of Kids during this pandemic /Suicide Prevention

The issue of Mental Health and our kids. - I Matter is a program funded by the state of Colorado that provides up to six free therapy sessions to all youth in the state 18 or younger, as well as those 21 and younger if receiving special education services. The program can be accessed at IMatterColorado.org.

I interviewed Liz Owens, the Interim Co-Deputy Director of Programs for the Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health.

And a young man who survived a suicide attempt talks about getting well and teaching others.

Immanuel Jones works at Sandstone Care. As a Mental Health Motivational Speaker and Advocate living with major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, he works to increase suicide prevention awareness, reduce the rate of suicide, and teach solutions on how depression does not have to hold you back from living your best life.

National Sports Center for the Disabled and The National Kidney Foundation

The National Sports Center for the Disabled hosts the Wells Fargo Ski Cup at Winter Park Resort every year to raise funds for disabled outdoor enthusiasts.

This year- February 25-28th.

The NSCD (National Sports Center for the Disabled) provides therapeutic recreation, competition and adaptive sports for children and adults with disabilities. Kim Easton is the CEO of the NSCD.

The National Kidney Foundation hosts their annual Great Chefs of the West Thursday March 10th. Dr. Lisa Latts is a doctor for high-risk pregnancy Moms. While she herself was pregnant with twins, she discovered she needed a kidney transplant. She tells her story and talks about the big fundraiser.

Long haul Covid. For some people who got Covid 19, they are still experiencing symptoms.

National Jewish in Denver is trying to help them get back to normal.

Dr. Todd Olin is Pulmonologist and Director of the Exercise Breathing Center at National Jewish Health. He talks about what the symptoms of Long Haul Covid are and what they know about why it might be happening. He also talks about their recovery programs.

Mask mandates are coming down and case numbers for Covid are going down. Are we safe?

Dr. Ian Gonsanhauser of the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Wexner Medical Center talked to us about what to expect this Spring as Omicron numbers decline.

Avalanche Information Center and Children's Diabetes Foundation

Ethan Greene is the Director of The Colorado Avalanche Information Center. There have been several deadly avalanches already this season. He talked about how they forecast the avalanche risks all over the state and how people can try to avoid triggering avalanches.

Coming up in April, there is a big Fundraiser for the Children's Diabetes Foundation. The Spring Brass Ring Luncheon and Fashion Show.

Proceeds from the Spring Brass Ring will benefit the Children’s Diabetes Foundation to fund research at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, promote diabetes awareness and education, assist families in need, provide scholarships, and sponsor activities for children and their families affected by diabetes.

Lori Finch is The Guild President who oversees the luncheon and fashion show. She talked about Type 1 Diabetes, what it is, and how it has affected her family.

Vitalant, the Blood Center needs donations/and State Patrol on Seatbelts

There is a severe blood shortage going on because of the pandemic.

Brooke Way from Vitalant came on to speak about the urgent need for blood right now, who are the best donors (O positive) and who needs the blood. Lots of blood drives have had to be canceled over the past year because of the pandemic and donations are way down.

State Trooper Joshua Lewis from The Colorado State Patrol came to talk about how accidents have increased since the pandemic began. Also, the number of deaths on Colorado roads has increased. He talked about how some of those people would be alive if they had been buckled up.

Here in Colorado, we lost over 650 people on our roadways last year.

Half were not wearing seatbelts

He came on to speak about Covid numbers and mask mandates in Denver.

Dr. Catherine Athens is a psychologist and holds Doctorate Degrees in both Clinical and Health Psychology and has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 25 years.
She came to talk about our kids and how they are feeling during this pandemic.
Kids are very resilient but she encouraged parents to keep talking to them and letting them get their feelings out because the pandemic has not been easy for them either.

The number of drug overdoses and the number of people with addiction problems spiked in Colorado over the past 2 years.
Dr. Josh Blume from the Denver Health Center for Addiction Medicine came to talk about how they are trying to help people recover. He also told us about the startling statistics.
Sarah Hornbuckle, Counselor and Musician came to talk about the Hornbuckle Foundation. They support people with substance abuse, counsel them and help them stay clean. They help find them homes and jobs.

Boulder County Wildfires

The Marshall Fire in Boulder County.
This devastating Wildfire destroyed over 1000 homes and severely damaged others in Superior and Louisville. It was shocking and tragic, 2 people died. The area will be recovering for years.
Tatiana Hernandez, CEO of the Community Foundation of Boulder County was the main fundraiser for the victims. She talked about how donations are helping the homeowners already and how people can help.

Jan Mc Hugh Smith is the CEO of The Humane Society of Boulder County. There were so many animals that were killed in the wildfire. There were also some who were found, and she talked about how to help people feed their pets and about how they had reunited some pets with their families after the fire.

On this one special day, donations are matched. It is an amazing source of funding for Colorado Organizations.

The 12th Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, raised a record-breaking $55 million for 3,151 participating Colorado nonprofits. Gifts poured in throughout the 24-hour online giving event from 73,270 unique donors through 220,783 donations.

The interactive nature Center helps locals and tourists discover the mountain area by providing interactive displays in its museum and conducts nature hikes outside its doors for everyone. They received funds from Colorado Gives Day.
