Paul Laverty was born in Calcutta, India, to an Irish mother and Scottish father.

He obtained a Philosophy degree at the Gregorian University in Rome. Thereafter he obtained a law degree in Glasgow and went on to do an apprenticeship with two of Scotland's most celebrated lawyers. He became a practising lawyer.

In the mid eighties he travelled to Nicaragua, Central America, and lived there for almost three years. He worked for a Nicaraguan human rights organisation During this time he travelled widely in Guatemala and El Salvador which were both in a state of civil war.

Laverty received the Fullbright Award in 1984 and lived in Los Angeles for 18 months.

After his time in Central America Laverty made contact with the director Ken Loach and since then they have been working in constant collaboration.

NYPD bomb squad Det. Lou Alvarez was THE face we’ll never forget at the Senate hearings to make aid for ailing 9/11 first responders permanent this year. Alvarez lobbied and gave interviews until he was no longer lucid, helping others suffering now and those who will fall ill in the future. He would pass away from his 9/11 related cancer just days after the hearings. Lou’s older brother, ex-Suffolk County police officer Phil joins me as we honor this hero and Marine.
On Veterans Day (Monday 11/11) Netflix will debut the doc “To Be of Service.” It features stories of service dogs making a huge impact on the lives of veterans with PTSD. One of those vets is ex-Army Ranger and Q104.3 listener Greg Kolodziejczyk. We lose 22 vets a DAY to suicide! These dogs save lives. It’s upsetting the VA doesn’t provide- vets have to pay $30,000 out of pocket for what seems to be the very BEST treatment for PTSD. Greg joins me‬ with “To Be of Service” director Josh Aronson.

This was a great visit with lots of laughs. The guys are very proud and excited for the release of the movie, which was filmed at TIAA Stadium (where the Jaguars play) in their hometown of Jacksonville, FL. Rickey and Johnny talk about why they're winding up their career on the road, but still look forward to hitting everywhere they haven't visited yet one last time in 2020.

Tamika Johnson was a student at Boro of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) on 9/11. A month later, classes resumed. At 31, Tamika was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. She didn’t connect the dots to 9/11 ‘til recently. There are so many like Tamika, along with 9/11 community attorney Michael Barasch joins me.

21 year old Alex Wolff joins me. He wrote, directed and stars in the semi-autobiographical “The Cat and the Moon,” which is open at The Roxy and The Village Easy- also on demand. Oh- and he co-wrote the music with his dad, Michael, who was the music director for “The Arsenio Hall Show”. If you saw “Hereditary” last year with Toni Collette, he played her son.

Prune Nourry is a world famous French sculptor, now living in Brooklyn, whose work centers on the female condition. At 31, Prune was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Her life suddenly mirrored her art. Her documentary “Serendipity” (executive produced by Angelina Jolie & Darren Aronofsky) can be seen at The Quad. Prune tells her story.

Caroline Hirsch, best known as the owner/founder of the legendary Caroline’s Comedy Club joins me. She also started Stand Up For Heroes 13 years ago, raising money for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which helps veterans and their families. This year’s event will be held at MSG Nov. 4th, featuring, among others, ‪Bruce Springsteen‬ and Jon Stewart.

We lost Hollywood legend Peter Fonda at age 79 last Friday, but Jim and Shelli had the chance to speak with him in the studio last June while promoting what will now be his 2nd to last film, "Boundaries." Appropriately Fonda played a retired drug dealer in a nod to his career-making role in 'East Rider.'
Fonda was an open book about his lengthy career and told us he was looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of 'Easy Rider.' Jim and Peter discussed the movie's unforgettable soundtrack and actually got into a debate about who should be credited with 'The Ballad of Easy Rider'! It was a thrill to have an all-time great visit- he was in excellent spirits and looked very cool, donning some very sweet shades.

4 years ago 18 year old Conrad Roy died after getting a slew of texts from his 17 year old girlfriend Michelle Carter encouraging him to commit suicide. Carter is currently serving a 15 month prison term for involuntary manslaughter but has taken her appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Erin Lee Carr’s 2-part documentary about the case, “I Love You, Now Die,” is currently on HBO and its platforms.

20 years ago Denise Ely was dying from an autoimmune liver disease. Her life was saved by a liver transplant. At 52 she began a new life, quitting Wall Street to become a registered nurse in Red Bank. Denise tells her story with Elisse Glennon of the NJ Sharing Network.

The album was written during a rare prolonged falling out between Richards and Mick Jagger in the late-'80s. Keith discusses how the rough patch with his lifelong friend and song writing partner resulted in lyrics that subconsciously addressed the tense situation.

Did you know women are largely responsible for the fall of ISIS? Director Eva Husson joins me to discuss her incredibly compelling film “Girls Of The Sun.” It's based on the true story of women who were separated from their families and turned into sex slaves by ISIS. They broke free and then formed warrior units to fight them. Husson’s movie is riveting, powerful and historic- PLUS it’s just a great film.

Back in September I met Kimberly McDonagh at the plaque ceremony at FDNY headquarters honoring the FDNY’ers who had died in the last year from ‪9/11 connected illnesses. Her husband was FDNY LT. Eddie McDonagh. I asked Kimberly if she could join me on “Sonstein Sunday” but she wasn't ready to share Eddie's story just yet. It was too raw, too soon. Six months later, we met again at a lunch the FDNY Family Support unit organized for FDNY widows and caregivers of those suffering ‪from 9/11 illnesses. I was the keynote speaker and followed Kimberly, who had the room in tears, talking about her husband’s illness and the life they shared. Afterwards she told me she was ready. Kimberly bravely and eloquently tells Eddie's story now.

Last year, after 37 years with the FDNY, Dr. Kerry Kelly retired as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Kelly was there ‪on 9/11‬ and immediately realized the health fallout that would follow. She was the first to develop a baseline health exam for New York City firefighters, with yearly follow-ups. ‬
This medical detailing was instrumental in linking health issues to the ‪9/11‬ toxins, leading to the passage of the Zadroga Law, which provides health care and compensating for those ailing ‪from 9/11‬ illnesses. Dr. Kelly has been described to me as the Florence Nightingale of the FDNY. I am so honored to have her join me and ‪9/11‬ attorney Michael Barasch.

The documentary “Roll Red Roll” is now open at The ‪Film Forum‬. It centers on the first sexual assault detailed on social media, from plans to the aftermath. The victim was a Steubenville, Ohio high schooler at a party for a high school football team. Director Nancy Schwartzman joins to discuss.‬

I am proud to have first time director Anthony Maras join me.

As many of us know, dating in midlife is a challenge. Julianne Moore and John Turturro co-star in “Gloria Bell”, which is actually an English language remake of a Chilean film made 6 years ago, except this time it’s set in L.A. The issues sure haven’t changed in 9 years! Director Sebastian Lelio joins me. He won the “Best Foreign Language” Oscar last year for his brilliant “A Fantastic Woman”- a film about and starring a transgender woman.

Connie Britton is the prison psychiatrist and Matthias Schoenaerts (“‪Far From The Madding Crowd‬”) is amazing in the starring role. Robert Redford loved Laure’s script so much, he executive-produced.

Ronnie is proud that his performance not only received great reviews but a full endorsement from Bruce's family. Then in between breaks something very strange happens...Jim and Shelli are visited by an apparition of Lenny Bruce himself! Bruce describes one of the main incidents that got him in hot water with authorities in the '60s and gives us a taste of some of his signature material. "I'm Not a Comedian...I'm Lenny Bruce" opens Fri 3/8 and runs Thursdays through Saturdays.

This week we have a young Jim talking very briefly with John Lennon in what looks to be late 1974. They discuss Neil Sedaka's song "The Immigrant." The song was inspired by and dedicated to Lennon and later released a single in '75. Jim and John also touch base on Lennon's long running immigration case which threatened to force him out of the U.S. This is goes by quick but Lennon is in great spirits and it's cool to hear Jim already talking with the greats just a few years into his career. A Veterans Day edition of Sonstein Sunday:
Emmy/Tony winner Jeffrey Wright (“Angels In America”/”Westworld”/”Boardwalk Empire”) helped veterans create a collaborative poem which they performed under his direction. The show was called “We are Not Done Yet.” The making of it was turned into a doc by the same name, which is airing now on all HBO platforms. Veteran April Harris shares her experiences and how the project helped with her healing.

And Angela Green of Wantagh has been an Army reservist for 33 years. She was a NYPD rookie on 9/11 when she responded to the terror attack. Afterwards she did tours of Iraq & Afghanistan. Sadly, she has joined the thousands of First Responders fighting for their lives because of 9/11 health issues. Angela (with attorney Michael Barasch) shares her story with us.
