The show throws a spotlight on female reggae artists in what is still a very male dominated genre and industry. In the 41 years since the Best Reggae Album category was added 150 male performers have been nominated and just 5 females. Etana was nominated in 2019 and 2022, Judy Mowatt (1986), Rita Marley (1992), Sister Carol (1997). In 2020, for the first time ever, a female won Best Reggae Album. It was Jamaican teen sensation Koffee who took out the award that year and she was nominated again in 2023. You'll also hear from female reggae artists from Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal via Italy and Kenya.

On today's show we're heading to France in recognition of Bastille Day, the National day of France, which was celebrated Monday 14 July (I'm a little late!). In 1789, the people of Paris attacked the Bastille: a political prison, a symbol of the monarchy and an armoury. The citizens aimed to seize weapons, ammunition and powder to fight the royal troops stationed in the vicinity of Paris. The day celebrates the beginning of the French revolution and the freedom of French people after a harsh rule by monarchs. Featuring some classic, vintage chanson songs. I have some 1960s pop from a few of the ye-ye girls and later in the show I have contemporary sounds from the melting pot that is modern France.

The second half is a celebration of the music and life of the first black African to be given a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the fab, five time Grammy winner, Angelique Kidjo from the West African nation of Benin. The 64-year-old was hailed as Africa's "premier diva" during a press conference announcing the list two weeks ago. Kidjo receives the honour after making music for more than four decades and releasing 16 albums. She is a UNICEF and Oxfam Goodwill Ambassador, and has her own charity, Batonga, which is dedicated to supporting the education of young girls in Africa. She's been recognised as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the World, named one of the top 100 most inspiring women in the world by The Guardian. The BBC included her in its list of the continent’s 50 most iconic figures.
