In April 2025, the Queensland Academy of Sport launched a ‘game changing’ app aimed at identifying new sporting talent from across the state in the leadup to the 2032 Brisbane Games. The app is the first of its kind in allowing both abled bodied and para athletes to see what sports they may be suited to that they may not have otherwise considered due to the facilities available to them where they live.

Remembering Paige Greco

Australian Paralympic cycling champion Paige Greco passed away suddenly on Sunday November 16 2025 after a medical episode. She was just 28 years old, and had only a couple of months earlier had won a World Championship medal for Australia.

Paige was the first Para athlete HER WAY interviewed, almost exactly four years to the day before her death. She was kind, understanding and helpful as I navigated the interview over zoom.

In our chat I asked her about the role of sport in her life, winning gold at the Paralympics in the midst of a COVID lockdown, and more.

From the time she touched a netball as an 11 yr old, Lani Finau was obsessed with the sport. Her passion and talent saw her quickly rise through junior representative ranks, but all the while she was aware of a lack of nutritional information about what teenage athletes like herself should be putting into their bodies.

Soon, this became Lani’s new mission, and today she is a qualified nutritionist with a passion in particular for helping girls and women in the sporting space about diet, nutrition and finding the balance between health and fun with food.

Being of Tongan heritage, Lani also works with Tonga Netball NSW as their Head of Nutrition, using her own cultural upbringing to show young Tongan athletes how to best prepare using the foods they are comfortable and familiar with.

HER STORY: Rhiannon Clarke

A World Championships medalist and two time Paralympian, Rhiannon Clarke was diagnosed with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy from a young age. She tried out a number of active hobbies as a kid, including horse riding and ballroom dancing.

But it was a Para Athletics tryout day which changed everything. From not even realising she was eligible to take part in para sports, she soon found herself rooming with Aussie legends Madi de Rozario and Angie Ballard just three years later at the Commonwealth Games as a 15 year old.

Now still in her early 20s but with multiple international championships and medals to her name, Rhiannon is passionate about educating people on ‘invisible’ disability - the ones which may not seem as obvious, but still impact the day-to-day lives of those who have them.

HER STORY: Delfina Shakespear

Growing up in a football-obsessed family, Delfina Shakespear was a handy player before deciding to pursue refereeing.

What started as a way of staying involved in the sport she loved has now seen her as Referee’s Assistant in over 100 A-League women’s games, becoming just the second woman to reach the milestone. She was also named 2025 ACT Referee of the Year and was an ACT finalist at the Australian of the Year Awards 2025 for the Local Hero category.

Away from the football pitch, Delfina is also a project manager with Sports Integrity Australia, with a mission to break down the barriers which keep girls and women from being involved in sport, from the playing field to the boardroom.

We discuss her career, embracing being a role model, and bust some myths around refereeing.

Born and raised in the UK with a footballer father, Natasha Price led an active lifestyle while also graduating with a law degree.

However on Boxing Day 2008, her life changed forever when literally overnight, a rare disease left her without vision or movement below her waist. She was given five years to live.

After years of inactivity, Tash decided to prove doctors wrong and take back control of her life. She relocated to Australia, and is now an advocate, motivational speaker, marathon winner, Para CrossFit competitor and Para Powerlifter.

Her story is inspiring, and an encouragement for anyone who has ever been told they can’t do something.

Coach Liz Mills grew playing basketball alongside her twin sister in Sydney. By her teen years she was coaching, and then a trip to Africa saw her take a chance which would ultimately lead to her becoming the first woman to be named Head Coach of a senior men’s national basketball team for a major tournament, when she led Kenya to a historic appearance at the Basketball Africa League.

We chat about her story of fighting to create opportunities for herself, the ongoing battle women coaches face in most regions of the world, and why girls and women shouldn’t be afraid of the word ‘no’ when it comes to applying for roles.

Growing up with three older brothers, India Robinson was taught resilience and independence from a young age.

The surfing prodigy achieved her life goal at just 21 years of age when she made it on to the World Championship Tour, but just months later suffered the first of what would become a series of serious concussions.

Suddenly, she was forced to take an extended break from the sport which was such a huge part of her entire lifestyle. While recovering, India also had surgery for endometriosis.

It meant another 12 months away from surfing, but in 2025 India is ready to return and prove she still has what it takes to be one of the best in the world.

We chat about that journey, plus her ‘Queen In Me’ program, which she created to empower young girls in sport as a response to some of the issues she was confronted with early in her career.

Following in the footsteps of her older sisters, Bonnie Hancock was probably destined to build a career on water.

By her own admission, she probably wasn’t the most naturally gifted of the family, but worked hard to compete at the highest level in Ironwoman.

But it was a decision in her mid twenties to focus on something which until then had been her competitive weakness, which saw her career go to another level.

That also led her to have the idea of becoming the youngest and fastest person to paddle around Australia, which she achieved in 2022. It saw Bonnie become a multiple Guinness World Record holder, and her incredible feat led to her authoring ‘The Girl Who Touched The Stars’, and was documented in the film ‘Diamond of the Sea’ (still available to watch on Kayo/Fox Sports).

In our chat, Bonnie shares about her incredible mindset, overcoming doubters, passing on knowledge to the next generation, and hints that there may be another big adventure coming sometime soon.

The eldest of four daughters and with a military father, Governor-General Her Excellency The Hon. Sam Mostyn AC always possessed leadership qualities, particularly in matters of equality and speaking up on behalf of others.

From starting a petition to change her restrictive high school uniform, to effecting change in the corporate world, ‘GG Sam’ is never one who has backed down from standing up for what is right.

Right through her life, sport has been a constant, from being a talented athlete in younger years, sitting on boards for sports organisations, and a keen supporter and viewer of many sports including her beloved Sydney Swans.

This year marks 20 years since she was appointed as the first woman to the AFL Commission, an important milestone in both her own life as well as for the sport itself. Much was accomplished during her tenure, from increased female visibility in the sport’s decision making, to the start of AFLW.

Now as the nation’s second female Head of State, she is a Patron for Paralympics Australia, Netball Australia and many other organisations.

Shafiqa Khan was a cricket-loving teenager in Afghanistan, whose life was up-ended when the Taliban took control of the country, banning girls and women from playing any kind of sport.

From her schooling in America to returning to her birthplace of Australia as an adult, Victoria’s path hasn’t always been conventional.

Her family’s capital investment organisation, Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate (WCGS), became co-owners of Hoops Capital in Sydney in 2022.

With gender equality an important pillar of what they’re about, WCGS saw first hand that it wasn’t a level playing field for basketball in Australia, so they decided to do something about it.

WCGS, of which Victoria is CEO, have now become part of a majority ownership group for the WNBL, determined to elevate Australia’s longest running women’s sporting league and its amazing athletes. Victoria’s story is an example that you don’t have to be an elite athlete to have a huge impact on the sporting landscape by using your platform to effect change.

Being part of a sporting team can take many forms. Paula Peralta has experienced it from two perspectives. She was a netball championship winner in 2004 at the Swifts alongside legends like Liz Ellis and Cath Cox.

From a junior rugby league player in Brisbane who dominated the boys, to representing the Matildas at the Tokyo Olympics, the 2019 World Cup, and playing for clubs worldwide in a professional career spanning over a decade.

It hasn’t always been an easy journey for Emily Gielnik, who has faced injury setbacks and been overlooked several times throughout her career, including a badly timed calf injury which

took away her chance to make the 2024 Paris Olympics squad.

For Emily, her career has always been about looking for silver linings, and in this wide-ranging chat, we discuss both the setbacks, but also how her work ethic and ability to look for the positives in any situation has held her in good stead, and even provided opportunities outside of football such as TV commentary and appearing on ‘The Amazing Race: Celebrity Edition’ with Matildas mate Chloe Logarzo.

The duo are also embarking on a new venture together - Futureballer - where they hope to provide unique coaching and mentoring to young footballers through coaching clinics, the first of which will take place in Sydney and Melbourne in late 2024.

But ultimately for Emily, the motivation and drive to represent the Matildas again is still there, and with her combination of dedication and self belief, the door is still open for that to happen.

Ella Sabljak became one of the first Australian women (along with Shae Graham annd Emilie Miller) to win a Paralympic medal in wheelchair rugby, when the Steelers claimed bronze.

HER WAY chatted to Ella direct from the Athletes Village in Paris just a couple of days after the medal win.

For Ella, it’s been a meteoric rise in the sport, having only taken it up in 2022 after a long and successful career in wheelchair basketball. We chat about adapting to a new sport, the future for women in wheelchair rugby, and being thrust into the bronze medal game at a crucial moment.

Sydney’s Eva Buzo grew up loving sport, but her work career took over as she became a human rights lawyer. Seeing athletes from her junior days succeeding on the world stage, she decided to take up the gruelling sport of Ultra Marathon Swimming and hasn’t looked back. Eva holds the record for the earliest crossing of the English Channel channel by a woman, and in August will attempt to be the first person to successfully swim from Italy to Albania - a tribute to her family heritage.

In this interview we chat about the world of Ultra Marathon Swimming, the mindset required to push through physical and mental barriers, swimming with a seal, and why a sport which is dominated by women setting records still struggles for gender equality when it comes to exposure.

Georgia Beikoff

Georgia Beikoff took up sport when she was a child as therapy for her Cerebral Palsy diagnosis. Soon, she was identified as an emerging star in cricket and athletics, and as a teenager would become a track and field Paralympics medallist.

But football was always Georgia’s true love, and just before the covid pandemic, she became one of the first athletes identified to be part of the Para Matildas - Australia’s football side for females with CP, symptoms of stroke or acquired brain injury.

A leader at the Para Matildas and Golden Boot winner at the inaugural IFCPF World Cup in 2022, Georgia shares about her journey from a kid in Newcastle to Paralympic and Football medallist.

The Minister and I chat about how Australia can make the most of the extraordinary opportunities of hosting women’s World Cups, Commonwealth Games, Olympics and Paralympics over the next decade.

I also ask her about the challenges of being a woman with a role of influence in a male dominated industry, and she has advice for girls and women thinking about entering politics one day.

Top ten tennis player Coco Gauff grabbed the world's attention in her very first grand slam match, at age 15, when she defeated one of her idols, Venus Williams, at Wimbledon. Still only 18, Coco is now a grand slam finalist, and in 2022 became the second youngest woman to be ranked number one in doubles. We chat about her love of superheroes, dealing with fame, and how she spends time being a 'normal' teen away from tennis.

Ella Sabljak

Ella Sabljak is one of Australia's most respected Para Athletes. Taking up wheelchair basketball as a teen as a way to make new friends, within three years she represented Australia's Under 25 side. Since then she has become a Paralympian, won Commonwealth Games silver medal as part of the 3x3 team in 2022, before deciding to give Wheelchair Rugby (a.k.a 'Murderball') a crack, becoming a World Champion with the Steelers.

Ella also represents her fellow athletes on various councils, and we chat about the importance of Para athlete representation, as well as many other topics.

This interview was recorded in December 2021, a few weeks before Jackie won Australia's first ever World Cup gold medal in a sliding sport, and a month before she won the first ever Australian winter sliding sport Olympic medal, with silver in Beijing.
