David Berthon's Motor TorqueSubaru released an impressive sports wagon in June in the form of the Levorg wagon – a 2.0-litre turbo all-wheel- drive fire cracker that grips the road like it has claws. I’ve just tested several - an exciting sports wagon in two grades - the GT at 42,990 and GT-S at $48,890. Equipment levels as you’d expect are high - Subaru’s third- generation Eyesight with pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control and on the GT-S lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot detection. High points are exceptional road holding and handling – sitting flat through corners with impeccable steering feel and turbo-engine drive-ability, best described as simply exhilarating. A CVT continuously variable automatic with manual shift paddles provides an 8-speed manual mode but the transmission incorporates Subaru Intelligent Drive system Si-Drive that features Sports Sharp, Sport and Intelligent modes. Subaru’s flat four turbo engine is well proven and the performance just flows. I find this type of vehicle interesting in that if I wanted a vehicle with this type of performance I’d want a sedan or coupe rather than a wagon. Nevertheless Subaru predict 250 sales a month and in August it managed 229. Sports wagons to my mind are well suited to the likes of premium brands like Audi and BMW but the Levorg is a strange mix in terms of body and performance. Biggest disappointment is the interior trim smell - overwhelming when you first get it and somewhat sickly. I’m David Berthon
