David Berthon's Motor TorqueSubaru sales are running 8.5 per cent up on the same time last year – the all-wheel- drive car company’s best-selling products the mid-sized Subaru Forester and its off- road wagon the Outback. The Subaru Outback is the third-best selling large SUV this year under $70,000 which is a phenomenal result given that most buyers want a large boxy SUV not a high-riding wagon. Subaru this week released a sports wagon – a vehicle it claims is the spiritual successor to its former GT Liberty wagon. Smaller overall but with more interior room to the Liberty wagon the Levorg five-seat wagon is an impressive performer. The 2.0-litre flat-four turbo engine links to a CVT automatic with manual step points - the performance – exhilarating to say the least. A superb vehicle on the open road is every respect in fact one of the most sorted vehicles I’ve driven recently in terms of grip, steering, ride and handling although noise intrusion on course surfaces lets it down. As a driver I found the new Subaru Levorg very satisfying – the most disappointing feature on three I tested was the interior trim smell – most noticeable when you first get in and somewhat sickly – but not so noticeable after you been in the vehicle for some time. Mazda’s 626 had a similar problem in the 1980’s when the compressed material on their rear parcel shelf released a pugnet smell in our warm climate. This aside, the Levorg GT at $42,990 and the higher grade higher-grade GT-S at $48,890 are stunning performers. I’m David Berthon
