This Tuesday February 19 will mark the 77th anniversary of the day the Australian mainland came under attack for the first time with the bombing of Darwin.

On that day, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town, ships in Darwin's harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor & Java during World War 11.

Michael speaks to Dr Karl James, the acting head of the Military History Section of the Australian War Memorial to shed light on the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia.
